Anyone else bothered that the power was still on during this procedure? (fan was spinning...)

It is hot swappable. Some applications don't have redundancy or allow for down time. I specifically came to see this done while the unit was online.

Ya, he made no mention of it. Somethings can go KABLEWY! if the power is left on.
