How to replace the fuel filter on a w202 c-class Mercedes...very easy ..about 30 minutes from start to finish. Other Mercedes models are similar follow me on twitter / fupabox
My dude, that was so informational and a joy to watch, thank you so much. But you are a nut case for using power tools right next to the fuel pump and fuel filter hahaha.
Very nice!! I really help me this vid, I already replace my fuel-filter and I watch this video before to work under my car c-230 and very easy ,,I no expert ,but rake me around 2 hours to replace the new filter ,, I do not disconect nothing just, put the jack under the car, pull it out the plastic cover (10 mm) and extension, pliers to pull the clamps and done. thank you so much for make this video.
Gonna have to do this on my old '96 c180. I hope it's the same process, cause when you see it like this it looks so easy even I can do it :) Thanks for the vid!
Hi i need some to help what could be the problem with my C220 ,i charged throttle now my car can not hold to high idling once i start the engine .It just kick then losing high idling and but when you hold the cable for the exhilaration it couldn't stop until you live the cable that's when it stops.Just yesterday i was charging the fuel pump its behaving the same
Nice, helpful video... I have a '94 C280 and started smelling gas, and noticed a puddle of fuel beneath the fuel filter dripping down from the plastic cover. Not sure exactly where the fuel is leaking from. Is it likely a hose?
Great job on the video it really helped me out a lot. Do you know why would the fuel pump wire would melt? this just happened to me today and can't figure it out. I have a new one ready to install since the old one was still under it's warranty. I don't want to this problem to repeat any suggestions of why this happened?
Thanks very much for the video, and your others mate. I agree about the quality of the fasteners, second to none those Germans, I try to use Wurth stuff when replacing bolts/screws etc. You couldn't re-tap the hole a size or two bigger and then drill out the bracket to suit?
I had the same issues with the rusted screw holding the pump and filter clamp on my CLK 230. I eventually unhooked the 4 rubber mountings and was able to get a pair of mole grips on the exposed end of the screw from above and managed to screw it clockwise i.e. undoing it after having given it a good soak in WD40. Replaced old screw with allen screw daubed with copper slip. Regarding the petrol spillage , I meticulously drained the old filter into a pot which I subsequently knocked over.....petrol hairwash.
Hey fupabox I have a2000 c230 komp its having hard starting issues then when it’s finally cranks runs smooth after letting it sit a couple hours it want start back
Thank you so much Amigo, such detailed info.and very helpful video make you a top formula 1 mechanic, May Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior bless you!!!!
No I actually haven't. I would assume the v12 may need a larger pump than the 6 or 8 . give your Benz dealer your vin # and get the part # for the pump on your car. Then cross reference at O'reillys
Hello there it's September 5, 2014. I own a 1994 C280 Mercedes and we are trying to flush the gas tank and replace the fuel filter. Do you know if there is a gas screw plug? or if the gas can be removed from the gas cap area, please let me know
no drain plugs really..but there are senders (one per side that can be unscrewed to allow gas to flow out..it will not completely empty ,but most will come out...the tank is divided into 2 sides so it would be difficult to suck the fuel from the filler cap...
I never clamp old rubber hoses, just plug them with a bolt. Rubber nowadays is not as elastic as back in the days so even couple years old rubber hose can easily crack if you clamp it
yeah I know what you mean.. I have used my hose clamp off tool a few times when I shouldn't have..and had to replace the line...would have been no issue if I had just plugged the line like you said...I worked briefly with a mechanic many years ago who used to clamp off flexible brake lines!! wonder how many warped rotors, sticking calipers and prematurely worn pads he had to contend with ?..didn't learn much from him :P
I just bought a clean 98 c230 base and I'll be the first to ever change the fuel filter and pump not that it was having any running issues but like you I figure it might be time after 23 years edit: Texas/California car no rust anywhere
Hi, I am loving your videos, I have a C220 1996 having trouble starting, when the issue arose, it could start and rev, as soon as I put into gear (manual) the car seemed to get no fuel and died (releasing clutch) - the vehicle would then start and die shortly after, now the car refuses to start and when it does, it almost immediately dies, to try fix it, I replaced the fuel filter and tested to see that the pump was infact giving fuel, which it was. If you have any idea what I should do next, hlp
Great video Fupa! Tell me, my friends c200 1998 was not cracking at all after having checked if both fuel pump relay works, and starter receiving 12 volts. I had to hit the starter solenoid a bit, and it cranked finally, but didn't start up to idle. I just found that there is a leak from petrol pump rubber hose and also the aluminum/ hard hose from the fuel tank. We have to replace them and thanks for the video! Can this possible be the reason why the car now doesn't start? Also, where do i locate the starter relay in the car, perhaps its not working.
@@fupabox Thanks. I also felt. I have replaced the leaking fuel pump/filter hose last week, and hope it will start cause it was cranking sharply when the solenoid finally woke up.
Hi! I have a c230K Sport from october 1995 (193hp) and i feel that he is losing some power and i don't know why. Could the fuel filter be one of them? What else do you think that can affect his performances and that i could replace? Thank you for the video.
I just done this on my c200 '96 saloon. I'm certain the filter is original but the car had only done 40k, that's a measly 2222 per year. The fuel coming out of the filter was black, not a nice looking colour for any liquid. Everything went fine apart from the c clamp cracking a fuel hose, thankfully I noticed this right away so replaced the fuel hose. The screw that holds the filter was also very difficult to remove, I guess 18 years would do that. WD40 a screwdriver and hammer son had it turning. A question though, the whole area seemed to be covered in a thin layer of golden/champagne coloured substance. Any idea what this maybe? I am thankful the holding screw was perfect and I'm sure this layer has something to do with it. It must have been oil based because the WD40 removed it and showed perfectly clean metal underneath. Sorry for the long text, thank you for a great upload. PS. It's probably a good idea to removed the petrol cap before removing the fuel relay fuse to remove pressure.
Hello very nice videos,I have one question,I bought one Mercedes w202 96' c180,before some days when start the machine at low revs the machine don't works, after that I drive for one week with no problems, but yesterday I try to start the car and nothing,at 10 efforts 1 start for 1 second and off.And I see flashing red and green light on interior mirror.exist connection with full system and this red green lights?I wait for 30 seconds to close this lights and after try to start the machine dut again nothing, thanks for your time.
fupabox hello today change the battery, from key,but the light for key when push the button don't works.l trying to start the engine but nothing, and the flashing green, red lights still remains.
My c180 lost acceleration while driving but engine was running. After few meters everything stopped. It seems as if there was some fuel stoppage and what was left in there kept it running for few meters. When I tried to start again, it stared for a while then shut down. I then asked for road help to go to the garage. They put it in the truck and we reached the garadge. When they inclined the car down while offloading and started everything was OK. Would be it a problem of fuel filter ? I donot want to be in this situation again
kashif mahmood It's possible the filter was full of junk and became blocked..the incline of the ramp may have allowed the blockage to shift enough to allow fuel through again. It will block up again if not replaced
***** and you think it will be bad fuel filter and not fuel pump or relay or .... I plan to buy one tomorrow. Also will it also be the reason that my car gives bad smell as if the fuel is half burnt
kashif mahmood the symptoms you describe may also be a bad MAF...but usually with a bad MAF the car will start and run..just idle will be bad and it will try to stall..it will also give a bad unburned fuel smell. The pump or relay should have no effect on fuel smell,.. to check the pump turn the car on to key position 2 ,where all the gauge warning lights come on, without starting the car...then go outside and listen to see if the pump is running..you should be able to hear it, .
got all the 10mm nuts off of the cover but I can't get the cover off the screws without possibly breaking it. any help would be appreciated I'm in the process of putting the new filter on right now
it should just pop off..sorry for the late reply , just got home... The only trick I can think of is to vibrate it by tapping with a screwdriver handle..hopefully that will shake any rust off that may be holding it
We got it! We used an upholstery tool to pop it away from the screws. We referenced to your video for a visual example several times during the process. Thanks a million for making this video dude! Hope it helps many more like me. Installation done on a 2000 C230K.
Fupabox please help me, So I have an issue with my 1996 c280 w202. When I start it up it likes to stall out on me after about 10 seconds or so. To prevent it from stalling I need to keep my foot on the gas to get the Rps up to about 1-1500. It dosent do this every single time but 9/10 times it will. The car has been driven with this issue for years at this point and would just like to get to the bottom of it, it’s a big annoyance. These are things I’ve replaced therefore ruled out to be the issue : Vacuum leak Fuel filter Air filter Mass airflow sensor Cabin air filter Air intake temp sensor Spark plugs Coils I have a replacement knock sensor I was going to put it in but figured it would be unlikely. Even my local specialty European shop had no idea at this point as I don’t have a check engine code. I was told it may be the throttle body or throttle body controller module of some sort but was hoping not as that’s a more expensive repair. Does you have any ideas? It would be greatly appreciated!
a few possibilities... dirty or plugged egr valve..cam or crankshaft position sensor..plugged catalylic converter... In the order of likelihood ...very doubtful about the cat, since it should have been completely clogged by now after years of running that way..I would also add 1/2 can of seafoam to a tank of gas to ensure the entire fuel system is clean
Hello fupa I really hope you could possibly help me with my 97 c230. I was driving one day and shut the car off after I parked at a store. When to start the car and nothing. None of the dash lights come on when I turn the key 2 second position, all the warning lights I guess. In position 1 the stereo can play the srs light in the dash comes on for just a second. But theres no clicking or buzzing of any kind. I've checked all the fuses in the main compartment they look fine. I went to the passanger side in the engine pay and unscrewed the cover for the ecu and k 40 relay. The orange 40 amp fuse is stuck, I haven't been able to pull it out with my fingers. I haven't been able to check if the black square relay is still working properly. Do you know if there is a starter relay I could bypass? Or do you have any other things I should try?
First thing to check is battery voltage .. any less than 11.5 or so (assuming you've had some stuff running while testing and trying to start the car )and the battery could be bad.. Check the battery cable under the car under the drivers feet . It comes out under the car on the lower firewall bolted to a large nut and goes to the starter. That wire can fray and cause poor starting until it eventually goes completely. Check the engine ground strap is in good condition .
I'm not sure where the starter is. Still new to vehicles as this is my first car. My fathers friend tested battery with a meter and it has lots of power, bigger battery then any other c230 I've seen. Do i have to unbolt any covers or the skid plate?
Nothing in the dash is lighting up when I turn the key to the second position, normally all the warning lights will come on for a few seconds until it starts. turning the key to crank there is no noise at all. Headlights or interior lights do not dim when cranking. Like the ignition isnt sending signal to the dash and starter but idk how to test everything
this video shows where to find the cable under the car ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iPUfOOIKTRs.html use this quick test to check your battery voltage from inside the car ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sotBEg-r3Uc.html
fupa my car starts to tremble when my fuel gets low. Not low enough to turn the orange light but just above that. so I know the car isn't empty. what could be the problem?
+minzi2047 the fuel tank is divided into 2 halves and is supposed to balance out between the 2 with connecting hoses.. there are also 2 level sensors. so 1 could be not working/reading properly..There could also be crud in the bottom of the tank.
Brian matty because it was a high mileage daily driver .I wasn't concerned about the rust much...when I want to keep an older classic car from rusting, I use this stuff www.por15.com/POR-15-Rust-Preventive-Coating_p_8.html
hi.fupa. My w202 fuel pump is only one year old and i think its defect again? There is no noise of the pump. I checked the relay, 12 volt ok. When I bypassed the relay with a wire, the pump also not working. I knocked at the pump - nothing. Then i felt with my hand the pump, the metal was going very very hot . A one year old fuel pump broken ? thx 4help
+bloodyfox if it is getting very hot ,it sounds broken. 1 year old ? that's not fun. Maybe it has a warranty.. hopefully the shop you purchased it from will give you another one .
bloodyfox I agree if seal were leaking you could replace and repair the pump.. the heat you are getting means there is either a seized shaft bearing which would be harder to find a replacement for. The old Mercedes pumps could be rebuilt.. the new ones have no replaceable parts inside
Nastee...Actually did this on my own recently and hanging aparatus while not great looked better 'n yours..(That's a first) Swapped out the pumps too as they were leaking as mentioned in an earlier. Way too many come to Jesus moments as she turns thirty....Noticed a wild screaming noise post install when fuel level goes down into reserve mode on the needle. Stops when I throw fifteen or twenty-bucks worth of gas at it... What I'm wondering is if I need to do the "accumulator" too?????? Two pumps and a filter is bad enuf so thought I would check with U b/4 laying out another $120 or so for the accumulator...Of course this noise was not apparent with the two scary leaking pumps either....( Yes, she Emma) lost inside garage privleges once those were discovered and suspect not happy in the couple of days of tropical sun-Fl sun was dead flat wicked up t'il just a few weeks ago or just after Hurricane blew up the other coast) When you get a minute...TKS.
Sounds like junk in the tank , or the pickup in the tank isn't allowing fuel to the pump when the level is low... lack of flow will make the pump noisey. ...accumulator should make the car hard to start after sitting if it is bad.. but... the damper built into the accumulator could be bad allowing noise, but maintaining pressure... I would try a full tank with some fuel system cleaner to see if ta dirty fuel strainer can be cleared out (if that is the issue) Also try banging on the tank a bit.. when Emma was jacked up to replace the pumps some sediment may have shifted and piled up near the fuel intake and strainer
Will check all but let it be said that tank was replaced in '15 when discovered it pick'd a nick (Don't ask) Sending unit and fresh fuel screen too although that sending uni isn't worth a &^%$. Again threw fresh non-ethanol Shell in yesterday and she's running like a top. She aka Emma really likes this change over in fuel which was initiated with top side engine replace in May of '15... Will air her out out up on the Interstate here this morning before starting your list.... No idea xactly how old the accumulator is but Gulp'd a bit when not finding a ref. for replacement even when going way back.... Soooooo GREAT to see that the Dr. is always in here on your site. Super grateful obviously.....TKU again...
have someone try to start the car while you hold your hand over the end of the tailpipe...you are looking for a strong puff of air being pushed through whether it runs or not...smell the air coming out to see if it smells of gas...if it smells like gas the ignition coils are possibly going bad...if there is very little air coming out,the exhaust may be plugged..likely the catalytic converter..these are just possibilities, and things to check
Fupa I just spilled my gas all over my garage I couldn't clamp the hoses I depressurized and everything oh my god I'm freaking out what do I do! I feel like I ticking time bomb my sister just bought this house!
+T1 Under 5150 just open a garage door and let it evaporate..you can throw kitty litter on gas or oil to absorb it as well..the fumes will dissipate in an hour or so
you are correct..the fuel itself isn't dirty..it's the sediments and crap suspended in it on the unfiltered side of the filter...the car would never run if that junk got through :) ...not sure exactly what the sediment is comprised of...
+Roger Christopher do you mean the starter won't even turn ? if so I would check the relay and fuse...they are in the trunk by the battery. Green relay with a fuse on top of it
+fupabox no when I turn the key nothing happens no sounds come from under the hood all you can hear is the vacuum pump running in the trunk and all the lights on the dash light up I just purchased spark plugs a min ago hopefully this will help I read that spark plugs can stop the engine from cranking
What i mean is my car is lost acceleration when i start the engine ,it cannot hold to high idling until someone hold the cable from the engine to let it not stop running ,please some help me i charged throttle and fuel pump recently
to stop the pump from pressurizing the fuel lines .. The engine will use up the existing pressurized fuel and stall out. Like turning off a water hose with a spray nozzle on the end ..There is still pressure within the hose until the spray nozzle is pulled and the built up pressure gets released.
Got a 1993 M/B 190E 2.6 with CPI.Fuel filter has 17mm brass nuts on metal line connecting to metal threaded filter end. Having trouble sealing up the tank end of new filter. any tricks or aids on sealing up these connections besides re-braking & re-torquing or using the flat white teflon tape. also been adjusting position of line & filter which has same connector type/shape as the original.
