How to Replace the Serpentine Belt & Tensioner on a Jeep Patriot 

Gotta love front wheel drive stuff. I just replaced the subframe on a compass because it was so rotted out not to long ago. Fun times.

That is why all drive lines should be front to back, like God intended. I'll be waiting for the tractor show!

Your comments on engineers is something I think every mechanic has said ( some of us more vehemently than others ) about the way things ( not just vehicles ) are designed. I’ve often said that engineers are just failed artists . On another note Shop Kat, safety is paramount. You relied on that floor jack to support the Jeep while you worked under it. Tsk tsk tsk. TLDR: lefty loosey on that bolt will not loosen the bolt, just the tension on the belt. This is hilarious 😅 I watched your exact video because I broke down on the side of the road and had trouble with the tensioner. I had to replace that pulley (I didn't do the whole assembly) but I was cranking on it in the "lefty loosey" direction...about 3:45 you say that you want to crank on it and hope the bolt doesn't come loose, however last night I learned: those are reverse threads. It took me an hour and 50 different methods to tighten that bolt before I come across your video and thought "IM TRYING"...Then I realized: those are reverse threads because lefty loosey is for the tension on the belt, so if lefty loosey also loosened the bolt, it would have a chance of snapping back after coming loose.....how did I not figure this out in less than an hour?? 😅

A rant about engineers and asking for one more inch...yeah, that's what she said 🤣😂😆

Wow, I was thinking you were going to put a breaker bar on the tensioner and thread on the new belt. Heck of a job might be the last time, hopefully. Much easier to put a belt on a stationary engine. Enjoy the tractor show

You are at the point of dodge ownership where you will be constantly repairing something....please tell me you have a jack stand under there somewhere....never trust just a hydraulic jack....

Hey from Edmonton! Awesome video, will help me a lot. 2016 Patriot. Replaced alternator, battery, this belt, checked all connections. Still not running proper. Another diagnosis at the GM place. They said PCM. Replaced it. New belt got shredded and fell off right after I get it back, telling me to replace the belt and tensioner system. Hope it works! Any advice or input on the matter would be hugely appreciated! Thanks dude. All the best

I tried Strong's Garage and decided it wasn't junky enough, so you beat them by a mile. I can't learn from their mistakes if they don't make any. And speaking of engineers, it sounds to me like the tensioner spring is not strong enough, which would be a design error that might have been universally duplicated by the aftermarket. Have you tried belt dressings? and maybe off label adhesives used as belt dressings? Can you think of any way to increase the spring tension a bit?

They do it so it has to go to the dealer. They're not trying to help the consumers.

Can you please do me a favor and put a jack stand under your Jeep next time. I have seen hydraulic jacks fail before. Hole saws make good bolt access holes.

Honestly I feel like I wouldn’t buy anything jeep/dodge/crystler after working in this. Everything seemed to be placed in a tough spot for not reason. Never had this much issues with GM

2011 Jeep Patriot: About to go through this journey. One idler and Perhaps a Tensioner are making a noise (Thank goodness my local Bosch mech is a Friend and used his stethoscope for free) . Still not sure if it is dry idler and tensioner bearings or full replacement is required of both??? Does anyone know if you can remove the seal, then add grease?

The fact that engineers are designing vehicle's today, with the intention to make it almost impossible for the average person to do some of their own repairs to save a little money? Is clearly gotten out of hand? Enough already.
