Brian Eslick from How to Automotive www.howtoautomo... takes you step-by-step through the process of replacing the starter motor on a 2003-2011 Honda Element with 2.4L engine. The job is done without removing the intake manifold. Estimated repair time 2.25 hours. But without removing the intake manifold you can cut that time in half.

I work on Honda's for a living and I never even thought to try this! Although, I do so many of those starters that I can have that intake off in about 2 minutes and ultimately it's worth the extra room you get. I've never had that 14mm long shank bolt come loose that easy!! But, that's why I'm subbed to your channel, I always love to see how other people take new approaches to the same problem.

This must be one of the GREATEST HOW TO VIDEOS of all time. He tells exactly what tools to useand how to do it unlike those that just say take it off. Also great because he gives NO BS. Many HOW TO VIDEOS spend more time on unrelated BS than on actually HOW TO turning a 7 minuite video into an hour of wasted time. GREAT

2:37 Both starter bolts on mine were so tight I needed to use a 3' pipe for leverage. I did mine from the top as shown in the service manual. Took about 8 hours with frequent breaks and cursing at Honda engineers who designed this.

Glad I came across this video my starter just went out at a gas station about ten miles from my house. Rains coming in and I didn’t want to try and take the manifold off. Luckily a buddy of mine is going to help he’s a dismantler at a salvage yard and has all the small extensions and wiggle sockets etc. hope to have it done and back at my house tonight. Thanks for the vid this will be fun doing it with jacks and stands lol

Great video, but I'm an old guy with large hands and a touch of arthritis. I struggled for a while but it became obvious that I would NEVER get the starter out from the bottom. I did one from the top some years ago and I remember it being a struggle too, but at least I got it done. This time I gave up after wasting too much time struggling with the bottom method and went in from the top. I had a manifold and throttle body gasket in hand, that's important. My previous difficulty was because I couldn't get the manifold out without removing the large resonator and since that is bolted in from the back, it was a REAL PITA. This time I wised up and took the bolts out of the radiator support member. It's the T shaped piece of metal just aft of the fan module which holds the inboard hood bumpers. There is one bolt on the bottom too, so don't forget that one. You don't have to remove it, just take the bolts out and move it toward the front of the car. Then you have enough room to wiggle the manifold out with the resonator attached. At that point, it's a piece of cake. The starter bolts were quite difficult to break lose and I'm sure I could have NEVER been successful from the bottom even if my hands were smaller. So if you have small hands and/or a real lift, trying from the bottom won't hurt. You have to take off the lower plastic cover anyway even if you do the job from the top. If you can't succeed right away, don't waste your time. The top method is not all that bad and, for me at least, is the preferred method. Nevertheless, I'll say this video is VERY well made. Congratulations.

Tried this with car on jack stands. Offering a couple of potentially helpful hints. Before starting with tools I used PB Blaster on the bolts as I live in the rust belt. Blaster will give you a healthy stream needed in such tight quarters. On the 12 v feed on top, you can use a 3/8 flex head ratchet once you have the starter unbolted and pulled up vertically. Finding a 1/4 flex head ratchet is hard and expensive. Once you have the 12v lead off the old starter, loosely tape back the rubber boot with electrical tape and leave an exposed end of the tape. The will retract the boot so it is not in the way when you are putting it back on the solenoid. Once you have the lead tightened on the new starter, use the exposed end of the tape to unwind the tape and reattach the rubber boot. Most important, when putting the new starter in while positioning it vertical nose down insert loosely the 14mm long shank bolt with stud into the mounting hole located on the backside of the new starter while the starter is still in the vertical position. Do this before you place the starter horizontally towards the crankcase. Try to keep the bolt from falling out so you do not need to try to blindly insert it after you have done the hand tightened 17mm bolt. I am small, but even with little fingers I could not ffed the 14mm from a horizontal position. Great video. And new starter installed...but more than one hour.

I just replaced the starter yesterday and wanted to thank you for the tip. Putting in the 14mm bolt in the starter while in a vertical position before mounting it, made the already frustrating job, a lot easier. 👍

My original Honda sensor went bad a few months ago, I paid my mechanic some serious $$$ to remove intake and replace, but I bought some cheapo aftermarket sensor and car was pinging under load climbing hills etc, I purchased original Honda Knock Sensor and used your technique and it worked like a charm. After purchasing a 1/4 flex head ratchet, I found you can pull starter out towards you, lower and twist the starter and you have enough room to use a standard 1/4" ratchet. Awesome video, saved me lots of money. Yeah, I'm still going to keep the flex head though.

Thank you! I just finished and the old Honda started up immediately. I don't know how you got the great camera angles but they helped lots. This was a frustrating job since there's usually room for only one set of fingers in there. The only thing I did different was not to unbolt the support bracket. I was still able to take the starter out, but maybe not as easy. Thanks again...I am so happy to not have to touch the manifold and spend even more money on gaskets.

@@HowtoAutomotive Without your guidance I doubt I would have figured it out. It took me three hours, mainly because I had to go buy a 1"1/16 wrench. Also, as others have mentioned I placed the 14 mm bolt in its hole on the starter before returning the latter back in place. Lastly the positive cable was surprisingly long which allowed me to very easily screw it off and back on the starter before returning it into the engine. Once again thank you.🙂

So I completed the job and saved a few hundred dollars as flat rate was 2 1/2 hrs. Everything was as u said but I have average hand size and I elevated on ramps but what a nightmare. The long bolt between the engine is horrible and it was a bit of contortion work just to find the bolt head. Getting back together was worse including the knock sensor but I electrical taped the socket to the bolt and with many small cuts and scrapes, it’s back together. The starter wasn’t acting like a normal faulty starter and bench tested normal but because the job is so difficult, I decided to remove one problem and replaced it any way. So far it seems like that was the problem. I think while under load, it acted differently. Thanks again for a well done presentation. Kelly

Thank you for this video! I will say my experience changing the starter was pretty much hell but I’m sure this method was quicker than the alternative. Mostly had issues getting the bolts in or out as they were super tight. Not sure why, no burrs and not cross threaded. Also blindly placing the top bolt back in was a 45 minute act of futility. Finally got it but the whole process left me wanting to push the car over a cliff rather than having to change the starter ever again. At the end of the day it was still cheaper than taking it to a shop.

I just did this and it worked on my 05 Element with AT. However there was no way that 14mm bolt was going to come out with this approach. What I did was remove the PS pump and move it aside (theres a RU-vid on replacing the alternator that shows how this is done - very easy to move PS pump out of the way). That allows side access with wobble socket with extensions. Had to use a breaker bar to crack 14mm bolt. Also have a small roach clip to hold back rubber sleeve on electrical connector to starter when trying to connect small 12v wire. You will see what mean when you go to hook up new starter. The big one with the 12mm nut was easy. For me it was the small one thats tough. Knock sensor did not come off easy either. Ended up using a 27mm socket that I put on half way as plug would not allow it on completely with socket wrench attached. Good news: you are not "working under car" ... just the front end. Bad news, this will easily take you 3-6 hours if you take your time and dont break anything... if its your first time. But you will save big $$$ Good luck!

Just take the intake off. Even if it takes more time, if your doing this stuff for work, you have to be sustainable. Going under is possible but so uncomfortable and annoying. And if that bolt doesn’t come out easy it can damage your body and be frustrating. Going from up top you don’t need a lift and can do it much more casually without contorting your body and working in annoyingly tight spaces. Therefore not draining your vital force that keeps you going throughout the day. You don’t want the job to kick your butt , you want to be doing the kicking.

I want to say - this video is phenomenal. You did a great job, seriously. However, this method is just NOT practical. There is absolutely no room down there for tools or hands. And those starter bolts get corroded and rusted making it very hard to take them off. If you take the manifold off you’ll see it’s worth the effort. The service manual is written by the engineers who made the car. Their advice may not always be the best, but they know these cars in and out better than anyone.

How to Automotive The method you used hear works well for the Accord from what I understand. It’s just not practical for the Element. On a side note, I’ve become increasingly annoyed with exactly what the engineers were thinking when they designed this car. A starter hidden underneath the intake manifold, and a subframe that needs to be dropped in order to change the oilpan gasket. Just a nightmare all around.

Thanks for the video! I do want to make three observations: 1) You must have tiny hands. My size L hands could barely fit at times. 2) I disagree with the starter cable bolt being the most difficult part of the installation process. It’s the upper mounting bolt, behind the starter when viewed from below. How in heaven’s name can anyone fit the bolt into the mounting hole totally blind without many false starts? 3) The Honda engineers who designed the engine layout and accessory mounts should be forced to do these jobs in a home garage, using common hand tools and none of the more esoteric tools needed for this task. See if they don’t do some drastic redesigns posthaste!

Hi guys I'm wondering if someone could help n give me some tips regarding my alternator. I was jump starting another vehicle with my 06 Honda Element, when the alternator in the Element caught fire. I obviously have to replace the alternator but does anyone know what other cables devices and parts i should inspect or replace? That would be a lot of help. Thank you.

ThaChazo I would check all the positive cable's going to the battery and alternator and make sure they're not rubbing on anything to cause a short. Also if they are burnt in anyway replace them.

How to Automotive thank you so much for the response. Have you heard of an alternator catching fire due to a jump start? It must have been an overload of some sort to the alternator correct?

I'm reinstalling mine in the morning , I'm going to tack weld an old socket to that back starter bolt bolt . Why didnt Honda just make it two inches longer ........ pricks

Jonadabster That would be a much better situation if it was longer. Good idea with the Bolt and socket

You must have friggin baby hands because I've been out here all day trying to get this goddam top bolt out of the starter. Unless something changed on the 07 there's no way to get your hand in there to get that goddam bolt. I'm so pissed off right now. Would have taken the dam car in if I knew it was this big of a bitch.

Record the same video without the lift and see how easy it is. All of these "easy" videos are done with the vehicle on a lift. THE AVERAGE GUY DOESN'T OWN A LIFT!! Of course it's easier standing than lying on your back! Anyone knows that. I can bet the bolts on my starter are rusted/seized to f#%k from thirteen Wisconsin winters worth of salt. Should be fun breeaking those free when the time comes. I think I'll just leave the thing alone until I have to get it towed when it finally and totally craps out on me. At least then I'll know it HAS to be replaced. Right now it's only spinning once in a while. Hooray for cars. I will give props though. Good video and very clear. Can I borrow your lift?

Can't believe I just replaced the fucking knock sensor and it took half the day because there is no room. Now I gotta take that son of a bitch back out to pull the starter out? Fml.

Honestly, it only took me an hour to do everything including replacing new brushes in my starter. This video takes so long and complicated.
