I have a 2005 Element. Purchased with 128,000 miles, it now has 170,500 miles. Replaced brake rotors and pads, struts, spark plugs, ignition coils and motor mounts. It’s been a dependable suv, plan on keeping for around town errands, possibly up to mountains for some camping.lm///

I own a 2007. There is a whole community about the Honda Element. People still go off-roading (for some reason) and definitely go camping with them. Even live on them on a daily basis. The community is not as active and huge as the Toyota Tacoma community, unfortunately. The last model was released in 2011.

I bought my Element 21 years/180,000 miles ago and never had one major problem with it. Taken some major road trips with it, and it's been my work truck too. Not so many miles because we always had two cars sharing the load. Element's been the best and most dependable vehicle I've ever owned, would buy it again if a time-traveler!

I enjoyed your no-nonsense and to-the-point explanation of each issue, followed by a very practical, clear explanation of the fix. Oh, and I very much appreciate the absence of the horribly loud background music many posters include in their video. Thank you for your clear and practical approach to the maintenance, prevention, and repair of an old favorite. I own a 2004 Element 174,000 miles and thank goodness, haven't yet experienced any of the problems mentioned. Thank you!

I found after having 5 Elements the most common problem is the window regulators seem to go out unexpectedly and intervals of about 50-80k miles, depending on how much you use the windows. I am sure there is a specific number of cycles that Honda has in their testing for production but that number I do not have and do not know if Honda releases that information to the public. Other common items are the cooling fans seem to go out about 100k miles in Florida weather while in a northern climate they last to about 150k miles or more. Its about $120 for aftermarket fans, easy install if you are mechanically capable. The radio volume knob tends to "slip " and the heater control light bulbs are intermitten after about 70k miles and replacements are very expensive($20 for one specific bulb and about $12each for the other 2) Other than that maybe corrosion on the brake calipers function and rotor warp if you are a heavy braker. Underneath corrosion in salty climates is a bad one. Finally what t3 of my Elements had was a clunking noise in the rear was from the rear stabilizer bushings were worn but not looking worn. About $15.00 and 1/2 hour 4 bolts (if not rusted) work. Any questions about the Element feel free to ask me.

I own a 2006 Element and must be very lucky. I haven't had any of these problems. I bought it used in 2011 with 54k miles and now have 128k miles. I have a very short commute. The Element has been probably my favorite vehicle I have ever owned in the 26 cars I have owned since about 1989. The thing is a tank in snow and the most utilitarian vehicle. But, thank you for the video. I will keep these issues in the back of my brain for possible future reference.

One cause for bad axles that a lot of mechanics overlook is broken or worn out motor or transmission mounts. Before replacing a CV axle, it's a good idea to check those so you don't damage a new axle. The damaged engine mount or transmission mount can allow the engine/trans assembly to move enough to pull the inner CV axle bearing assembly partially out of the outer raceways and even rip the rubber boot which causes loss of grease and premature wear. I've seen a lot of CV axle issues coincide with bad motor/trans mount.

We have his and hers 08 Elements and haven't had these problems but thanks for the heads up. They are the most trouble free cars we've had. Only 1 problem with the first one in 7-1/2 yrs the other 1 in 3-1/2. Both were purchased used. I think they will outlast me.

Yeah I recently bought an 08 Element, had it almost 2 years now, it was a salvaged vehicle, it's in great shape. I hadn't had any of these problems, I keep my oil changed with high quality oil, changing it myself. The CV axles are in great shape, so I have no complaints. But this is good information to know. My only problem I had was I had to get the right side fan replaced on the radiator, simple process, haven't had anymore problems.

2003-2008 many would consider Gen 1, with major upgrades that happened 2009-2011. I have owned 4 elements, and am currently down to just one, a 2011. I guess I'm pretty lucky as none of my Elements suffered any of the problems you described...although I have suffered very minor issues with all. 2005 was not a very good year but to be honest, issues did not surface until well after 150,000 miles. The biggest issue with the Element is the suspension. It's not made to carry very much weight and wears out frequently. I see all these homemade "camping" Elements and feel sorry for the owner who has no idea what they are in for. Another piece of advice: Have that valve train adjusted after 100,000 miles. The last Element I sold had 305,000 miles on it-regular maintenance is the key. IE: Change the oil & filters religiously....@100,000 swap out the Auto tranny fluid & spark plugs-your golden.
@machtnichtsseimann
@machtnichtsseimann 2 года назад
Bought my 2003 used...was hesitating, because of the rear suspension. 130K miles. Ain't terrible, but it squeaks and wobbles a bit. Also, at freeway speeds a faint whirring noise is coming from the transmission. Which apparently is a common problem with Elements, IIRC. Had the valves adjusted after purchasing, oil change, but haven't driven it much to pay much more. Oh! I've got a case of the Battery Drain Blues. Not too drastic, but replacing a battery after 3 years is too soon. It's why I came across this video...looking for pointers on how to diagnose the problem. Thank you for your tips.

Bought one of the first Elements brand new in 2003.....I had Chow dogs, so it was perfect for hauling. I also had a summer job with my town watering the hanging baskets of the downtown where I lived.....it carried the water tank with ease, and when I popped out the back glass sunroof....and could reach the baskets easily with the watering wand.....sometimes for fun Id drive around with the watering wand out of the roof.....it looked like I had a shower in the back of the Element....lol.....My only complaint was the gas mileage....It had plenty of power, and of course it was a box, so I guess I shouldnt have been too surprised, but that was the only major complaint I heard from fellow Element owners....I drove it for 11 years, and I never experienced any of these problems. I only had to replace the starter motor....not surprising after 8 years of driving....aside from the fabric of the drivers side seat breaking down...(it wouldnt have if I had bothered to put my OEM seatcovers on after having the car detailed)....this vehicle was bulletproof...it had hard use....and it never let me down ever.....loved going round domestic 4X4 trucks in the wintertime that had skidded off the road......best vehicle Ive ever owned.....

Nice video and tips, though your key tip may also be the connector to the instrument cluster, they are notorious for having a bad circuit board and the connector needs to be supported, this also causes the cluster lights to not work all the time. You can also hear the fuel relay clicking behind the glove box when it won't start.

Thank you thank you thank you. Shortly after flipping her 100,000 miles on her most of that I drove myself bought her second hand, one previous owner, low mileage and LOVE my 2010 Element. Was a fairly easy and cheap fix compared to having to find another car that fits my lifestyle. The shimmy is gone and was done in one afternoon at home in my yard. You are one of my favorite vloggers for car issues and my husband kept trying different things to get it to go away and looked at me like I had lost my mind when I said can we replace the CV axles and see if that fixes it. But we did and now she is running like she did when I bought her. So many thank yous for sharing this information you saved me trying to find another vehicle am trying to hold off until they bring the new Element out before buying another car. My last car was a Honda Accord and drove that 280,000 miles before someone came around a blind curve and totaled it. I won't own anything but Honda because you just cannot kill them if you fix minor problems before they become major issues.

Being a Honda tech I laughed at this video, the ignition immobilizer fault is not normally a issue it’s the electrical portion of the ignition switch. Can be replaced separately PN is in a tech bulletin for common fault and does not require reprogramming. Knock sensors common to fail but verify harness or previous repairs. Vibration issues, inner cv joints front, wear causing vibration on acceleration, no mention of contamination of rear diff fluid, noise, vibration on turns. Please be advised under no circumstances use aftermarket axles, total junk, you will be sorry No mention of rear control arm corrosion some models safety recall No mention serious AC faults, compressor failure contaminates whole system. ac relay failures No mention of lack maintenance “ oil changes” causing timing chain to wear out prematurely as well camshaft lobes failing. Some other issues with drive belt tension making noise under accessory load. Common oil leaks, valve cover, timing chain, timing chain tensioner cover.

My list, based on talking with Element owners and personal experience with a 2003 EX 4wd AT: 1: Bad shift solenoid. Will slip when shifting from 1st to 2nd, and from 2nd back to first. Don't let anyone tell you that you need a new transmission, or need to rebuild it, if you have this problem. The low shift solenoid is externally accessible, no need to remove the transmission, it is a very quick fix, remove the old solenoid, and put a new one in. Very common problem with Elements. 2: Bad neutral safety switch: Won't start in park, might start in neutral. Can be intermittent. Cranks, but barely, not enough to start car. The neutral safety switch is behind a metal cover on the transmission, behind the front driver-side wheel. Very easy to get at if you take the wheel off. There are videos on YT on how to do it, maybe 1A has one. About a 5 minute job. 3. Window regulators. Windows fall down. These often break on Elements. Easy job for DIY, use tape to hold the windows up. Again, there are videos on YT, I think I used 1A's. 4. Door speakers fall apart. The rubber ring surrounding the paper cones on the Alpine woofers will break down over time. I replaced mine, but you can apparently replace the rubber ring with a kit from Amazon. 5. Plugged heater core. Known issue for specific VIN ranges (search plugged heater core on Honda Element Owners Club.

I have driven my 2005 element new off the lot for 19 years with three hundred k on it. One thing I noticed when driving down to Arizona is when on a right turning curve at sixty miles an hour I would get a weird shimmy I’ve never experienced before . I've been dealing with the Vtec issue, though it's the "low voltage" code 90% of the time, despite having replaced all parts more than once. Oil screens have always been clean and clear. Honda eventually put out a bulletin about this being an error, but AFAIK never decided to acknowledge or provide a fix to it. As a result, myself and many others are perpetually stuck in an intermittent cycle of driving in safe mode unable to do anything other than just replace the car. I honestly would pay an electrician to wire a bypass to end this.

Great Job, (new subscriber). I just picked up a 2007 Element for $4000 with 150K miles. After getting Front struts next week (under $900 from a friend who has a shop) it should be a wonderful UNIT. HOPEFULLY He can figure out why my cruise isn't working. I will look for a Video from you.

Sue and 1A Auto are truly the glue that holds my Element together. 😂 I have an Element specific question...the inner tie rod ends. I am having a time and a half trying to disconnect them. I have tried many different styles of tie rod tools but none of them fit properly for one reason or another. I'm about to try using two pipe wrenches..any advice? I would greatly appreciate a video showing how to remove these stinkers!

I did my research the Honda Element was originally released and marketed to active people who enjoyed the outdoors lifestyle. I have driven mine to Florida, South Carolina, and Texas from TN plus a lot of smaller road trips and is my daily driver. She is comfortable to drive, backseats are amazing for passenger comfort and is flexible enough to do exactly what an avid Camper, hiker, kayak enthusiast needs. She has rubber mats instead of carpet which I adore the seats lay flay and easy fit a queen size sleeping platform (ours is removable when not needed) Is perfect for hauling a small trailer for kayaking although originally she did carry them on her roof without issue, I just prefer being able to drop my trailer and unload my kayak without having to lift over my head. She is also strong enough to haul a small camper if you prefer. Her payload is around 900 pounds and pulling capacity is around 1,500 lbs. I also use her to carry home improvement materials and can fit an 8 foot board inside with the seats laid down flat. They are getting harder to find but they are still out there if you know where to look. I found mine locally thankfully and looked at several before I drove her and said this is the one I want. They also hold their value pretty well compared to other cars after a few years. I know mine is still worth more than I paid for it 5 years ago.

Well, I rang 2 out of the 5 bells. I just replaced the drive shaft at 203,000 miles on my 2004 a couple of weeks ago. Also replaced my front CV axles recently. On the left one, the boot cracked. That was messy. The right one snapped, yes snapped. It corroded under the inner boot. Couldn't see it but last summer I pulled out of a parking lot and accelerated hard. SNAP! They don't make the OEM parts anymore so you have to look for NOS OEM axles. Get the OEM if you can otherwise you'll be a vibratin'. I'm surprised that the head gasket isn't a major issue on these engines. I just replaced mine last year because the aluminum head warped ever so slightly and had an internal leak. You can't fix that with a pour-in sealer.

great video thanks , i experienced the solenoid problem and my oil was leaking a lot , got it fixed and car has been running super well since. I noticed that my check engine keeps lightning up , i had it checked twice both times they fixed it , nothing major but after a while it comes back on , car is running perfectly , i was told that it could be sa sensor issue nothing to worry about , what is your opinion on that , i want to make sure my Element stays in good shape . It' s a 2003 and it has now 184,000km on the engine .

I had a 2003. Bought it to carry our Newfoundland. I took out the backseats. First time I walked into my local Honda dealer saw it on the inside sales floor. I walked over to a salesman and said “I’ll buy that right now”. He said “you want to test drive it”? Me “no”. Really happened that way. I think it was $19,900 on the sticker.
