It is truly amazing this little part (now $6 on Amazon) will leave you stranded. Yesterday taking an offramp, coming out of the turn I dropped it into 2nd, stepped on the pedal and nothing, no wonderful hum & lurch forward... just despair in my heart :( So I came home and the first place I went was here because I love watching all the content. I watched this, went to the car, removed the trim and there was my throttle cable just hanging out... literally, no bushing. @Mark, a HUGE THANK YOU, not only for this video but all the work you do for us Zed-3ers out here. Your content is priceless and you deserve to be knighted, Sir Mark of the Zeds we will call you :)

USCG Mark, thank you so much!!! on Monday, April 1 the Z left me stranded in Wilmington and it took 3 1/2 hours to make it back with a tow truck. Could not get the car in the shop until April 15. I took a chance and ordered a throttle bushing using your screen shot of the part # for $5.75 from Amazon on April 2. part came today I took the cover off and lo and behold, guess what? throttle bushing missing!! This isn't related to this video. But I wanted to say that you have several videos that have been very helpful to us. I bought my 16y/o a 1996 BMW Z3 for his first car. Actually bought it for him when he was 15 so he could start learning to drive a 5spd. But he loves the car. He just got his driver's license, so he has been out running the roads on his own......lol. But you have some great videos that are helping us take care of some things on the Z3.

I checked my Z -- it does indeed have a "toebox" cover (FYI, there are a number of this cover on eBay). I never really recognized this before since it so snugly nestled up under the dash area. So, in the future I will check the bushings you identify in your video. Many thanks. 😀

The tool worked like a charm and so did your instructions! It was the exact same issue for my 1997 Z3 as for yours. I also replaced the bushings (following your instructional video as well) and has the code light up. It turned out that there WAS a loose connector under the passenger seat, but the light wouldn’t turn off, regardless. Less than a minute with the reset tool and everybody in the house is happy again. Thanks for the videos!

After three brief attempts to replace the grommet in 110+ degree heat, I threw in the towel and took the car to a local mechanic (I temporarily secured the linkage with a paperclip). Mind you, I'm 75 with some serious physical issues, and contorting myself into that footwell nearly trapped me for life (just kidding, but it was challenging extracting myself after one of the attempts). What I couldn't do, Mike, the mechanic did in five minutes. And what he knew, that I didn't, was that once you remove the panel under the steering wheel, there is another underlying panel. With an extension on his socket wrench, he was able to reach the deeply seated bolts on that underlying panel and remove it, providing significantly more room to more easily maneuver around in the footwell to insert the grommet and reattach the linkage. My BMW is the convertible, if that makes any difference.@@MomentofZed

@@vvgmhod4 i get it! I havent been back down there to do the bushings due to the heat in Florida. Im glad it worked out for you. Ill have to remove the other panel to do the other ones. In the z3 any interior panel removal is fraught with danger due to cheap plastic!

The throttle cable bushing on my 1999 Z3 broke and I was stranded at an intersection. No fun. Eventually got the car towed home and repaired the throttle bushing. So, being proactive, I decided to replace the throttle cable bushing on my 2001 Z3 to avoid a repeat breakdown. But to my surprise, the 2001 does not use a throttle cable or bushing. Instead, it uses an electrically controlled throttle reostat mechanism to control throttle movement, much more complicated and expensive, but I'm not sure it's any more reliable.
@MomentofZed
@MomentofZed Год назад
That is very interesting! Hadn't heard that from anyone yet. Now that is all cars of course. My mazda is that way. On the old one you could repair with a cable tie in an emergency. Dont know what to do with a bad reostat.

You have a more modern m52tu or m54 engine in the z3. Those are drive by wire (electronic throttle body) which isn’t cable driven

Although the accelerator bushing was horrible I just replaced that bout to take it for a tea drive but I suspect that kick down switch is probably faulty as well.
