Just finished this job on a 2017 grand caravan. One important note; be VERY careful how tight you close the bleeder valve. It’s plastic and uses an o-ring to seal. The plastic will crack and /or the o-ring with be crushed if you over tighten. Just a little past finger tight, you can always close it a bit more if it leaks coolant, if you over do it and crack it, you’ll be doing the job again.
@brianrolfs9040
@brianrolfs9040 Год назад
Yep. Used a Dorman and wondered why the coolant was spitting violently from the bleeder valve. Cracked O Ring. Bought a 2 pack at Advanced for $3.50. All good now.

Great video! I just changed mine due to the check engine light being on and it not getting all the way up to temperature. I'm a little worried because after running it for a few minutes with the heater on like you said, the top hose wasn't very hot at all. However, it seems the temperature is getting up to where it needs to be. I'm going to take it for a test drive, clear the codes and hope for the best.

It may be worth waiting a little longer for the thermostat to open. It may take 10+ minutes from a cold start, especially if the ambient temperature is low as well. It gets hotter much quicker driving, but can take a surprising amount of time when idling. Come back and be sure to let others reading know how you got on please, best of luck! :-) --- To help support us (for both you and others reading this) there are a few things you can do: 1) Donations both needed and welcome! Did mine with your video help. Two additions, need to mark the hose to tstat position so it’s clocked properly. Pulling assembly up so it can be worked on was great, didn’t see anyone else with this method. The power steering reservoir can be moved out of the way very easily and gives more access. My old stat was regulating at 180 degrees which set the code, new regulates around 205.

Take 5 minutes and remove airbox and move powersteering reserviour......makes this job 100% easier!!!!!
@YouWrench
@YouWrench 4 года назад
Yes, you could do that as well. The power steering reservoir has two pipes that lead off in opposite directions front and rear, so likely not a huge amount of movement in that, but certainly some and an extra couple of inches is always welcome. I would not bother removing the airbox though as not really needed, and extra work. But moving the power steering reservoir is a good tip and might be very useful! I'll try that next time and see if it helps. Thanks for the input - much appreciated!

If you get an engine light on after the thermostat change, and you did not have one before, then yes the light should switch itself off after a few complete driving cycles. Allow 2-3 days and it should go off. If not, you should try manually resetting it via OBD software, if it then comes back on again there is a further issue. But in most cases, it should go off by itself.

Please change the upper and lower radiator hoses at the same time you change the thermostat !!! You will be saving yourself a lot of trouble . Also change the four clamps ( two for each hose ) .
@YouWrench
@YouWrench Год назад
You can indeed change them, but it's not usually required unless there's a deeper issue. That siad, it is always a good idea to check the hoses every once in a while though for signs of deterioration. As for the hose clamps, yes they are TERRIBLE quality on these Dodge's and well worth changing as they fail often. I’m assuming that the blender valve on the thermostat housing needs to be opened up anytime the system is flushed as well. Is that correct? I replaced a radiator and upper/lower hoses on my mom’s 2016 a few days ago and didn’t bother to open that value. But we did pour coolant in there and topped off till the thermostat opened up. After that I topped it off again while squeezing air bubbles out of the upper hose. So the system was running great for a day, but on Day 2 the needle started climbing 1 mark above the normal middle mark. So my mom has been driving with the heat on. Is it possible there’s still air in the system? The heater gets super hot, but I have noticed that the system hasn’t sucked out any coolant from the overflow tank. That remains on the full mark.
@YouWrench
@YouWrench 2 года назад
Yes, you are correct. It would definitely be worth seeing our coolat change video for the Grand Caravan 3.6 (here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ehe2G5NiSZk.html). As part of the process you open the thermostat valve before starting the filling process, and also during the process you should turn on the heating in the cabin to ensure that the coolant flows around the entire system. Wifes van has check engine light....so I used Fo seal scanner with dash command app and it says P0128 coolant thermostat(coolant temperature below thermostat regulating temperature). I'm going to change the thermostat tomorrow when it gets in at the parts store but what I was wondering more about was the code. I couldn't clear the code and the app said permanent code. Doest this mean that code will need to be cleared by better scanner/dealership or will the code remove itself once I fix the problem and drive the van for a bit?
@YouWrench
@YouWrench 3 года назад
That's odd. Yes, often you can run the car for three or more driving cycles and if the car sees that the problem has now gone, it will clear the code itself. Sometimes they have to be manually cleared. Quickly popping off the airbox and swinging the power steering reservoir out of the way does give you quite a bit better access, not needed though.
@YouWrench

Yes, absolutely. If you want a little more space for the job you can remove the airbox, it's fairly quick and easy to do (we have a video on how to do it on our channel). Hmmm. I'd be thinking blend actuator (motor) firstly. It sounds like it may not be opening up the rear passage to the warm air and it stuck in the cool air position. thank you, one strange thing for me is I unscrewed the drain plug on the new thermostat to burp the air while I put new coolant in, but there is no coolant came out from the drain plug(in video 12:08) . is this normal?:
@YouWrench
@YouWrench 2 года назад
No, that is not normal. It should fill the system and it will come out of the bleed valve on the thermostat first because it is physically lower than the radiator cap where you are filling. Maybe you did not add enough coolant? It may be an indication that there is a blockage of some kind in the system if the coolant is unable to get from the radiator cap to the bleed valve on the thermostat. I'd recommend you run that part again just to double check. Does it matter what color antifreeze to use you had orange coming out the drain plug but put green in it
@YouWrench
@YouWrench 2 года назад
Don't base it on the color as different manufacturers use different colors. The standard is Mopar OAT, but there are various other alternatives out there. Just make sure if changing brands that the new stuff is compatible with the old (some are universal and claim compatibility with all existing coolants). Do a little Google research beforehand if concerned. Hello, what kind (brand) of coolant did you use to top off?
@YouWrench
@YouWrench 3 года назад
You can either use the factory spec stuff, which is likely OAT depending on the age of the car. But also, many coolants these days are designed to be mixable with other coolant types. If mixing types then make sure the new stuff is definitely compatible (read the label before buying, many say they are compatible with all coolant types). This car in the video has Prestone coolant, and so was topped back off with the same stuff. --- To help support us (for both you and others reading this) there are a few things you can do: 1) Donations both needed and welcome! I recommend replacing the original constant tension clamp with a new one instead of reusing the original/old one.
@YouWrench
@YouWrench 4 года назад
Yes, good idea. If the old clamp looks to be corroded then this is a must! Generally they do not NEED to be replaced if they look good, but can be for personal choice. It is true that they will naturally lose a little of their spring tension over time, but not usually enough to cause a leak. But if you had any leaks previously or any corrosion on the clip - replace it! Better safe than sorry :-)
