Thank you for making this video!!! I have a 2005 explorer with the same problem. I was about to sell it. Fixed in less than an hour. Engine sounds amazing now!! It took about 15 minutes of running the engine for the noise to go away. I guess it takes time for the oil to circulate in the tensioner.

I read you should prime them with oil prior to install, that’s probably why it had the noise for 15 minutes
@SouthernPinesNetwork
@SouthernPinesNetwork 4 года назад
@@stevemelidis6072 i wouldn't advise it. It makes them dead solid. The tensioners have springs to apply the right amount of tension if you loose oil pressure. Those chains (old and worn) break mostly at startup. I disagree entirely with priming them solid and that's why ford themselves doesn't recommend it i am guessing. If anything, at the most, i would install and then crank without starting if someone is concerned about priming that way the the chain and guides can sort of settle.

@@SouthernPinesNetwork thanks for the reply! i have an 03 explorer 4.0 and my rattle comes on at initial start up, and under load mostly over 2k rpms, how can i tell if the chain guides/cassettes are bad? i just ordered new tensioners so hopefully that'll be the remedy
@SouthernPinesNetwork
@SouthernPinesNetwork 4 года назад
@@stevemelidis6072 guides are mostly going to be an all the time thing. Get them tensioners in and you will likely be fine. You will likely still experience some of that sound as they are a little noisy anyway, but it will lessen. Mine is rather healthy. The guides were changed on it already prior to me obtaining the truck (seen in receipts 2012) and the tensioners were the 3rd set and it still has a slight noise at startup. No where near what it was obviously.

One other thing when you start the engines try to place the gas pedal to the floor it shuts off the injectors in most cases and wont start the engine. During this one minute minute and a half engine turn over time the tentioners are filling with oil pressure before the vehicle starts. You will notice that once this happens and start the engine you will not hear the clatter of dry oil during actual engine running. Also fills the oil filter so that is not dry either.

I start my 2005 this way on the first start up of the day. It produces less wear on the plastic tensioners when they are dry of oil after sitting for long periods. A 10-15 second cranking time, is well enough time to get the tensioners and the oil pressure up to normal. Hold the pedal to the floor, turn the key to start, look at the oil gauge, when it moves to show you have pressure, release the pedal and the unit will start. Works for me.

2001 4.0 on my explorer sport. During a cold start the chains make noise for 1 or 2 seconds max and then are completely quiet after that both when idling and driving at any RPM. Even if the engine is turned off after completely warming up and then turned back on 1 or 2 hours later the chains won’t rattle when started back up… I replaced both tensioners using OEM ford parts and this made no difference in getting rid of the 2 seconds of cold startup rattle that was present before replacing both tensioners and the reason I replaced them in the first place. When I removed the old tensioners they both seemed to still have good resistance when trying to compress them compared to the new ones which indicates the old ones were “probably” still ok. Again, after those brief 2 seconds of rattle when started up when the engines is completely cold (ie been sitting for more than a few hours) it’s quiet and it never rattles or makes noise any other time. One other thing to note is that if I do the flooded crank start method before starting it when cold, it will NOT make the 1 or 2 second rattle. (I will hold the gas pedal to the floor and turn and hold the key to crank the engine but not turn it over until after about 10 seconds and when I see the oil pressure gauge move to the middle, I let go of the gas pedal and start it) If I cold start it using this method it will NOT make the 1 or 2 seconds of startup rattle. Is this my guides that are broken or is this normal to have a second or two of rattle when the engine is completely cold to build oil pressure and have it get to the tensioners so they tighten up to hold the chain? I’ve had this vehicle for a little over a month now and the symptom has stayed exactly same even after replacing the tensioners and changing the oil using high mileage oil and Motorcraft filter. I just want to know if this is normal or if it’s not and I should get rid of the vehicle if a larger problem is imminent.

Its nice that you don't have to deal with the air conditioning / from ford new the original left ( passenger side ) tensioner only has about a quarter of an inch of wiggle room ( travel )to the new cassette cartridge??? / I would suggest replacing the driver side tensioner with a new OEM from ford and then use the old one from the driver side to install on the passenger side as it has .200 more throw. and yes it does make a difference.

You I believe got pretty fortunately lucky. Every tentioner that I have done has slack in the chain where they can jump teeth. Once the tentioner is out. If you happen to know what stroke the engine is at, might make it fool proof. It would let the valves place pressure on the opposing side of the tentioner. Once that happens the tight side of the chain will hold the chain in actual non jump position. This could actually jump time and ruin valves.

Since nobody answered, here. Hopefully this can save you before it’s too late. Startup rattle: tensioners. Maybe cassette is minor but everything is still functional Constant soft rattle (sounds like marbles in a tin can): cassettes are done for. The guides are broken and while you can probably run this engine still for a very, very long time- it’s gonna need the fix eventually. The constant soft rattle will be audible when driving at about 2300 RPM, 2700+ rpm, and when at idle.

@@jugulartheninja the argument over whether or not to prime the tensioners is one that only has an impact on the first start up after installation. Ford does NOT recommend priming, neither do I.The tensioners are designed to work as they are, without oil pressure, in case, well, you start the truck in the MANY instances you would have NO oil pressure. The single most common moment of breakage that would occur on these chains is at startup. I assure you, if it's going to break, it will be more likely with a rock solid tensioner. Beyond that it takes about 10 seconds to prime if you wanted to.. these trucks are known to have several noises that NO ONE can diagnose without a more descriptive set of circumstances and/or seeing/hearing it in person. Manifold and donut gasket leaks, top end sounds, cartridges and guides, etc. Get a hose, use it a stethoscope and find out where the noise is.

Not related at all. Your codes are emission related codes. A sensor is telling your computer that there isnt enough fuel in the system. Most times this is the o2 sensors but they can be related to other sensors. Timing tensioners are a purely mechanical aspect of your engine.

@SouthernPinesNetwork
@SouthernPinesNetwork 3 года назад
Well tensioners are cheap and worth it just for maintenance so it wouldn't hurt. Sounds have a way of resonating, and vibrating and feel/sound like they are coming from elsewhere. By your description I would say your problem could be something else in the valve train but its hard to tell without being there. I like to make a mechanics stethoscope with any long rubber hose you have laying around. Find the sound like that. Of course be VERY careful leaning around running engines. @SouthernPinesNetwork
@SouthernPinesNetwork 4 года назад
man, I hope you didn't run it in tight like that. You'll have to pull it out and see what threads are damaged. Try to use your old one to straighten the threads if they are damaged on the engine maybe. It could be tough but if you can get it at the right angle and get it spinning you may be able to. It its on the tensioner, then try to fix those threads or get a new one.

J K yeah man, oil leaks would come. I would not try and run it in. Are you positive its crossthreading? Can you see any threads damaged? I would remove the plunger from the old one and use it to “chase” the threads. If its only the first little section of a thread, i can see that working. That will also allow you to determine whether or not its actually cross threading or if the resistance with the new tensioner just makes it tighten up so much that it is fooling you. Following what i mean? Like literally break the spring tension cylinder from the old unit. Cut it out, pull it out, etc

you'd really have to try and pinpoint where the sound is coming from. maybe have someone put it in gear, set the parking brake and hold the service brake ( BE CAREFUL!) get under the hood and under the truck and find where the sound is coming from for sure. You can use a hose like a stethoscope and listen everywhere to find your rattle. Be careful of your accessory items and belts while moving around the vehicle. don't get your hair or the hose caught anywhere! It could be as simple as a heat shield, or it could be one of many things in your engine as well as a flex plate where your transmission and torque converter but up to your engine. It could also be one of your accessories... (alternator, ac compressor, etc) Best way to determine that is removing the serpentine belt and starting the vehicle and seeing if the noise is still present. Don't run for more than a couple minutes like this.

So there are a few tensioners of different designs within that engine. There are cartridges with plastic pieces that are VERY known for breakage. Those are what break when these (the metal ones you see in my vid) aren't replaced as a maintenence step. When those break, they fall in that pan just like he is saying. In my opinion they are junk at that point and not worth fixing. But thats up to you to determine i guess. I think mine used to be '00 and for the most part, the parts fit right so far, but I also got interceptor hinges on one door, which doesn't quite fit right, and a back gate that definitely came from another vehicle all together.. I wonder what year it once was

One more... These guys are wanting to charge me $2,000 up to 3,000 does that sound about right or are they trying to over charge me?

John Man....in your video you never mention or show any video that shows you "priming" the Tensioner Bolts....If a person was doing DIY step by step from your 20 years of expertise video....and didn't prime the bolts because they didn't see or hear you do it...they would screwed...WTH Dude.?

Not the case. Ford does not recommend priming the tensioners. I do not prime them.

Thihten it to hell???? How bout tight n then a 1/4 turn. That’s usually pretty close to most torque specs for most things. To hell is what will happen if you tighten to hell. And hasn’t he heard of a parts washer? Ffs

Forgot the most important part prime the tensioners. Some mechanic, he never posted startup. Because he had air in tensioner made no difference. Smoke another bud and rock on with vids!

I, just like ford, disagree entirely with priming those tensioners.

I think the oil will prime it up dynamically: the higher oil pressure the higher pressure on the chain.

@@SouthernPinesNetwork lol what's a good reason ? getting it started in the threads if so you are a sissy and should not be working on vehicles or doing diy videos because in every book or online guide says to prime it or it may never pump up right.

I know you made this a while ago but shouldn't you per fill tensioner before you installed it ❓
@SouthernPinesNetwork
@SouthernPinesNetwork 8 месяцев назад
No. The mechanical spring is there for a reason. Lots of people say that you should, but they aren’t thinking it through. Those tensioners will not be primed on a cold start. The springs will be the only tension there in that instance. There is no reference to priming these tensioners in the service bulletin for that reason. The mechanics who say they should are not capable of thinking through the mechanical process of the part - so, not certain I would want them working on my vehicle. Beyond that - you are replacing these tensioners due to lack of tension to begin with. If you put max tension on a worn chain at startup (the most common point of failure) you will be increasing the chance of breakage. Thanks for asking 👊
