Using my 2002 Ford Mustang Gt to replace my slow leaking valve cover gaskets. The job only took me less than 3 hours and only spent a fraction of the cost if I have gotten it done at a local shop. Minimal tools needed for this job so don't be afraid to attack this project. You can also use this time to swap out camshafts while your valve covers are off. NO need to drain your oil as well since the vehicle is off and it is in the oil pan down below. Feel free to ask any questions, and/or comment below. Thanks for watching!

One of the best videos I've watched. Great advise taking hoses and plugs apart. I'm on an Explorer, my bad side is the left side, had a half day disconnecting gas line, EGR, coil bank, and a hundred vacuum and electrical plugs. But my bolt holes were leaking also, as you noted. You didn't say if you did anything special to avoid another leak, except to clean. I was thinking of using silicone around the back ones. ( heat and quantity when accelerating ) Thinking of going back to Flat Heads.

Hey Jonathan, yes you can use the same gaskets, but I would replace them if you already have them out. They were only about $30 depending on where your located. I picked mine up from a local auto zone.

Hey Scott, I also did encounter some trouble trying to remove the valve covers but managed to get them out smoothly after moving around some parts. As far as the passenger side, remove your intake, move up your fuel rail and rest it above the throttle body (as shown in vid), and if you need a little more room remove your COP's. Also move your wiring harness to where it won't interfere with the valve cover. For the driver side, this is the more difficult side.

Thank you for the video. Having done this I have to say reinstalling the passenger side valve cover without dislodging the gasket due to minimal clearance of rear cam bearing block is a real pain in the ass.

Do you thinking a bad valve can be causing a ticking noise upon dtarting the car? In idle my 3.8 mustang ticks . I thought it was the header gasket or flange but my car has no flange and replaced the header gasket; still, noise remains. Any advice? I see you are very informative and helpful to everyone who's asked questions. Great video and Thanks in advance

Great video. I got oil in the spark plug in my gt 98. But the spark plug not in the velvet so I am kind scratching my head here any advise

There are small circular gaskets that go on the valve cover to prevent oil seeping into the spark plug area.

My 96 mustang doesn’t have the pcv valve hoses. Instead had some filters installed Could you showing where each hose connects . On your video I don’t get to see exactly where all the hoses go

Take out the coils and disconnect the injector electrical connectors, on the drivers side take out the fuel pressure regulator ,the two 7mm bolts if you are careful shouldn't need to remove fuel rail.

hey man i'm just trying to get my valve covers off on my 99 gt i'm having trouble with the passanger side getting to the last 2 bolts on the bottom side by the ac how did you get to that i have been using wratchet wrench with an extention and a swivel but cant quite get it

Man I tell you what the passenger side is the hardest one to take off with that ac line ran from the condenser along the side of the middle bolt being in the way.

Its easy as fuck😂quick hack, put a large screw driver in the transmission dipstick tube and push it back in order to give yourself space to remove the valve cover😂☝☝☝☝ur welcome.

Lezz Love Yes they do, there are small circular gaskets that attach to the underside of the valve cover.

This also applies to any Crown Victoria Owners out there. both the mustang GT from about 93 till 07 have the same type 4.6 L Engines

just asmall note that you have your sides mixed up. drivers side is always left no matter what, passenger is always right. it just relieves any confusion from parts stores to books to shops. neat video tho

Since the brake booster is in the way of removing the valve cover out, you must pull it out towards the right side of the vehicle. This can be done by removing your COP's, moving your fuel rail out of the way, and pulling your wiring harness as far away as you can without tearing it. It can be done. I did this myself, but an extra set of hands for a couple minutes will help by holding the wiring harness away while you pull the valve cover out. Glad I can help! Feel free to ask more questions!

it is not at all I painted mine and it took forever because I did not want to scratch the paint ended up having to repaint 4 times but when it is done it sure looks good. Dont want to discourage you to do it just be ready for the work

If you're going that deep on a 4.6 replace replace the intake it will free up plenty of space and the nice upgrade the doorman is the best for the money

Oh well if u want to go that way frist? What i done First when i noticed oil down in on top side of cover bolt holes! Is get ur tool box n get socket n extendion n ratchet! Just snug up cover bolts! Dont put pipe on ratchet n tighting! Just snug them up abt half turn or so! What does that is when u down shift, to lower gear n let out on clutch while going to fast! It puts to much pressure on inside of engine vac system cant handle it all!

I'm about to do this on my 03 gt. They were just done by the previous owner and are leaking a lot on both sides. Smells bad also like burning... Dripping on the exhaust... Don't know why they are leaking and wish I knew since it's only a month old job on them.. but I have a quick question. I see the long and short bolts. Do they make a difference on where they go? Are the those long 8mm bolts longer thread then the reg 8mm bolts thread? if that makes sense.... Can't find answers online about any valve cover gasket related topic here besides your video.

chpjimmy Since it was just done that recent I would go the extra mile in finding out where the bolts are supposed to go. I knew mine were in the right so I re-used them in the same place. I would also make sure you have the rubber o-rings that go with/attached to the bolts.

Eric91611 Removed it. Used many swivels/u-joints to remove those stingy bolts.

If you are already taking off the valve covers, I highly recommend you go through with replacing the gasket. They shouldn't disappoint for quite some time once you replace.

Do NOT use this time to swap out cams. You'll need a lot more tools and a lot more time.

Depends on which stage cams. Some are plug and play but most and what I recommend is getting them timed right and other adjustments.

i had problems doing this on my crown vic but i got er done, it took almost the entire day i thought it would be a walk in in the park until i got to the back bolts which you can't even see, ford gives you barley enough space to do this

Zeke Rangel all fords are like that. I havnt done a valve cover gasket yet that was easy on a ford. I have an 03 escape 3.0 4wd and motor is sideways cause it is fwd, and the whole top part of engine has to be removed. major pita for ford
