In the previous video I highlighted troubleshooting a blown up one way bearing. Here is how I dealt with it.
I like to ride in the Winter. (It is almost 8 months out of the year up here it seems. ) I'm learning that running 10w-40 oil is just too heavy for this big bore to crank hard in the cold and still fire a good spark without burning out sprags so...
The button head bolts on the Yamaha Big Bear have had their protruding threads crushed at the factory to prevent separating the one way starter clutch sprag bearing from the flywheel. I don't want to buy both when I only need the bearing.
Here's how I separated the two. Then I'll be running 5w-40 oil to reduce the cold cranking resistance.

I just pulled my flywheel off my bigbear and the gear came with it. It doesnt spin or move at all and the gear anf flywheel appear to be one unit... is that the cause of my timing being miles out and no start ?

Flywheel? Flywheel would sit over the stator. I can’t picture the gear you’re describing.

Are referring to the sprag that you see in my thumbnail pic? If so, and that pulls the gear with it your sprag bearing sounds like it is bound up and likely bad.

I never had a problem starting my rhino till tonight. it always started with a week batterie I put in a new one tonight and now it just spins. I turned on all the lights and stereo then cranked it as it slowed down with all the draw it griped up and starts. I now think it spins so fast with the new batterie it won't grab till the bearings drop so I'm replacing that soon, I guess. if you think about it is working like a clutch with all the free play. it spins till it slow enough to grab. I didn't think about it but i bet it will grab with that pull start I took of a grisly if i get in a bind. with someone turning the key of course once it grabs. you have to be pretty strong to start it with that pull start. But it is there.

I agree, pull start on my 350 is heavy. :)

Should the bearing spin or does it stay still?

It should spin in one direction. In the other direction the centrifugal force causes it to catch with the outer race surface and permit the starter to engage and spin the motor. If it's spinning in both directions the 'lobes' are probably rounded off and the bearing will need to be replaced. I can't recall if I mentioned but I have also found that running a 5w oil vs a 10w oil made a difference in strain on these bearings during starting especially in the cold.

@@VermontLife My bearing doesn’t spin in either direction, it moves just barely in both directions but stops after about half an inch of turn.

Sounds like it is seized up. It should spin freely in one direction. (Can’t remember which way off the top of my head.) Be sure you don’t have resistance when you’re testing. Ie take the bearing out (or bearing attached to the gear and try to spin.)

@@VermontLife The bearing spins freely when it’s not pressed into the housing, one side of the bearing sits higher until you press it in and then the bearing no longer spins

@@dantheman2617 Yeah that's not right from my experience. Even when the bearing is sitting in your hand it should 'catch' in one direction. If it's spinning freely 'in your hand' then the lobes are worn down on the direction that should catch and you'd want to replace it.
