So I recorded the process on how to replace some brake pads on an Audi Q5 with the standard brake setup. This will be the same setup on an Audi A4 and A5 with the standard brakes. The process of changing brake pads on other vehicles is very similar and the general steps remain the same.
This is a fairy straight forward job and anyone with a decent set of tools and capability could perform this job.
Tools and equipment needed are:
Jack to raise the vehicle
17mm socket with a long bar to remove the wheel bolts
13mm socket and ratchet to remove the two caliper bolts
Large flat blade screwdriver or leaver bar to remove retaining spring
Hammer to help remove the pads from the caliper
Large plyers/grips to push the caliper piston back in
Wire brush or file to clean the pad carrier
Brake cleaner solution
Brake grease
Small screwdriver or pick to help release the pad wear sensor plug
As a disclaimer please don't forget that the brakes are the most important part of any vehicle and failing to repair them to manufacture standards could cause harm or death to yourself or others. Work should only be carried out by trained professionals.

when separating the sensor, you use the pick to pop out the finger that points up then turn it 1/4 and it slides out. Dont pry the parts apart, it will break. push down on the opposite end of the connector and pull them apart. Great video, the diagrams help alot. Keep them coming!!

Just one tip, if the brake reservoir was full when you started you'll have a flood under the bonnet from pushing more fluid back up the line which will damage your paintwork! I always use a syringe to remove fluid to a low level before starting, then top up with fresh at the end.

Yes great tip, especially if you’re changing the front and rear pads at the same time. alway check the fluid level before and after 👍🏼

Excellent vid. Took one hour for both front brakes. The passenger side has no wire, so it goes much faster.

Can I ask you a question? I'm the first owner of 2013 Audi A5. I replaced my wheel bearing last year at the Audi dealer (under warranty). After that, I was out of the country for 2months for vacation. When I back, it sounds weird (like a drum) every time I apply the brake. Higher speed when applying brakes, the higher frequency you get. What is wrong with it? Also, the "brake pad" warning lights on for few times. But my brake pads and rotors are good, I don't think replacing it will fix. Do you know what is wrong with this car?

Use a wire brush to clean where the pads sit, make sure you grease caliper pins, and always make sure you torque your caliper bolts... There is a reason they make torques specifications for these bolts... Next, always make sure you torque your lug nuts. You can find torque specifications for these bolts online

Does the warning light/tell tale on the dash have to be reset after fitting of pads?
@GarageTechAutomotive
@GarageTechAutomotive 6 лет назад
Jason stroud, no, there’s no need to reset the light. The pads will come with a new sensor. Once it’s replaced the light will go out.

thanks for posting, very helpful. . . unfortunately out piston will not push back, some hydrolic resistance i suspect, , , i will keep looking for the reason why.
@GarageTechAutomotive
@GarageTechAutomotive Год назад
Hey, if you can’t push the piston back with some large water pump pliers or a piston wind back tool, the calliper will be seized and need replacing or rebuilding. Hope that helps 👍🏼

Hi Great Videos, My brakes discs was skimmed and new front brake pads fitted about 1 week ago. There is however a squeaky sound that can heard when driving (Not under braking). It goes away when i press the brakes. Any idea what that is ?
@GarageTechAutomotive
@GarageTechAutomotive 3 года назад
Might be the pads just grabbing on the discs, only thing you could do is remove the pads and ensure the sliders/carrier is clean so the pads can move freely, use some brake grease. Were the pads genuine ones or aftermarket? Sometimes aftermarket ones don’t fit as well as genuine. Also, some pads have a chamfered edge which helps bedding in. A couple of hard stops might clear it. Failing that, it could be the discs if they haven’t been skimmed correctly.

Hey! Audi changed the front brake design, this video is not suitable the Q5 after 2012.

Great video. Is it the same process for the rear brakes?
@NSUScooter
@NSUScooter 3 года назад
No it’s not. You’ll need a special tool to get the caliper to collapse in the rear. You can usually rent one from an auto parts store. In the rear the calipers have to rotate as they collapse.
@msk3905
@msk3905 6 лет назад
you pushed the caliper piston straight in, on my prior A4 (prior model) the piston had to be screwed in. Did they change this for this model A4?
@GarageTechAutomotive
@GarageTechAutomotive 6 лет назад
Hey Michael, are you sure you're not thinking of the rear brakes? The rear brakes need the pistons screwed in on the older models as the handbrake mechanism forms part of the caliper. In mostly all front calipers the pistons are simply pushed back in. Hope this helps

@3:27 I saw on another video if you pull on the rubber bolt covers, it allows you to pull the calipers off without loosening the pads from the rotor. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-V1vohg3t_JQ.html

@chingo3625
@chingo3625 6 лет назад
Audi does different things about the brake for every model. Q5 is different for A4. It is not the BMW does for brakes which is almost the same.
@tstrenuous10
@tstrenuous10 6 лет назад
This is not the same caliper as a 2015 Q5 has and this video won't work.
@mattka5354
@mattka5354 6 лет назад
DirtyChemist The Q5 is made with both types of brakes/rotors depending on the year and type of wheels. If you calipers have an opening on the top or the brakes and are held in with a pin then you have the Brembo brake set up. Look up Brembo brake replacement and you will find many videos on DIY. The Brembo brake set up is actually easier to do.
@leeroyheckart7554

this is incorrect. 2012 does not have 13mm caliper bolts.

Do not include Q5, especially after 2013 model. It might not apply to other Audi, The author should have it examined if it apllies to other model. Mislaeding ingormation.

I hate all mechanics who use a Needle Nose Pliers for removing the plastic bolt caps instead of the ABS tool specifically designed for this. You successfully scratched the bolt caps and the wheels.
