Weather you have a new cattleya orchid, or it's time to replace the media, repotting Cattleyas is pretty easy and they handle it very well in comparison to other orchids. This is my repotting routine that works for me, so feel free to adapt it to your own environment. If you are new to Cattleyas, hope this helps you out.

Your tip about pruning the roots preferentially in favor of the roots emanating from the younger leads is awesome. I learned something new and kickass. Thank you, Danny. :)

Thank you Danny, that was very useful. I have not made my first "re-repotting" so far but what I've noticed of all my new Catts is that all their roots (when they have them, :P) die just a few days after repotting. At the beginning I thought I was doing something wrong, but then I assumed that it happened "just because" and changed my way of repotting Catts. Now I keep the Catt unpotted for some days and soak it everyday until I see new root tips, to make older roots useful until they die. When I see the new roots coming out I cut the dying older roots and then pot the orchid the usual way. It is very complicated but now I understand what happens and I hope I improve the way I pot my catts. Thank you again!

Antonia Orchids Hi Antonia, if this method works best for you than why not, it's always a good idea not to place decaying roots in new media as it will spoil it faster :)

Wow!! Thank you thank you!! I've been a grower of many plants but I don't have much experience with orchids. I just got one of these and this is such an amazing video!! So much detailed, helpful and great information and I thank you so much!! I thought she was dying but now I know she's ok lol. Thanks again! This really helps a whole lot! I notice the roots die if I leave the old roots on too and it causes so many problems. Great info! Have a beautiful day! 🌻🍃

Hello, Miss Orchid Girl! This is another excellent tutorial that will help my students and me with our orchid project. I purchased a small cattleya yesterday for $13 US dollars. I will reveal it to my students later this morning at school. By the way, my students send you warm greetings. your tutorials are excellent, and you have received an A+ from us! Your grade is based on the immediate improvements (over three weeks time) in the growth of several of our orchids using your growing instructions; we attribute all our growing success to following your easy-to-follow instructions. Thank you very much! (12:15 a.m. on.March 15, 2016)

I know what you mean about the old cattleya roots, mine seem to start new root growth faster when I chop off all the roots from the back few bulbs, it's like it jump starts them into growing.

Did it! My first ever cattleya's were repotted one week after purchase. I could not work with the medium. You gave me the confidence to do it. One was packed with sphagnum moss and styrofoam peanuts. The other, which was doing better - bark, some sphagnum and styrofoam peanuts. My conditions cannot deal with this medium. Took the plunge. BTW, it took ages to remove the old medium. The one in sphagnum moss was a mess - all the interior roots were dead. We"ll see what happens, but thank you for giving me the confidence!!!

+Marcella Miller :D congrats for being brave, now what will come might scare you a bit.. in the sense that the canes might shrivel, but that's normal if they have very little roots. So no worries, the new canes will produce roots and when they do the older canes will start to plump up as well ;)

Really enjoyed the video! I'm excited to repot my cattleyas now:) I think it will be easier than repotting my oncidiums.lol. It took me a long time they were sooo compacted one with roots twisting every where and the other with this horrible soil like media and both had a HUGE ball of moss in the center!😑 At least they're showing little signs of growth in the few weeks since I repotted them. Can't wait to see how you're going to compact the cattleya, would like too see how to do that since I'll probably get more in the future. Thanks again for sharing your orchid knowledge :)

@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 9 лет назад
Leyder Gonzalez not all bifoliate cattleyas will stale, not all unifoliate cattleyas will grow multiple psb per year :) it really depends on their genetics. If the new psb is producing new tiny roots, repot it now, later you might damage the roots if they get too big. I will make a video on how to make orchids grow straight ;)

Hi danny thanks for all the answers your so kind , i have another question , what can i use to disinfect my orchid ? I saw little bugs I'm not sure if they are microscopic spiders or another thing but they are so so sos so tinny , should i wait until i repot it? Or can i spray something just like that without repotting ? I don't wanna repot it right now because its just about to open the last bud and it looks gorgeous , can i use a normal antiseptic? i have one that says that it kill all microscopic things , fungus , viruses and bacteria but it is for humans , can i use it on my phal?
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 9 лет назад
andres barragan Hi andres, well it depends on the bugs, some might be harmless and there's no point in stressing the orchid with chemicals until you repot. So if you can upload a picture on photobucket and share the link in a comment I could take a look. Human antiseptics might contain the wrong type of alcohol, usually people use rubbing alcohol to kill off some buds, or hydrogen peroxide, so i'd go with those rather than other cleaning agents.

I live on the Island of Guam - and need to repot my Catteya. I want to use coconut husk inside a clear plastic jar. Good Idea? Would it be better to chop up some coconut bark with it. Or forget about coconut altogether and hope our Home Depot has Orchid Bark.
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 9 лет назад
John Dalzell Hi John, well the problem with coconut is that it needs some major treatment. It contains a lot of salts and tanin, for this reason it should be soaked in water for about 10 days, with water changes every day. Then it needs sterilization so it doesn't pass on disease. Even after this treatment I still have trouble with mine :( some brands sell properly cleaned coconut and it seems fine, I just had very bad experiences with coconut. So it depends on you, if you think it's not a hassle you can try preparing the coconut. If you don't want to bother, just buy some good quality bark :)

Do you ever use rhizome clips? When I re-potted my two sacrificial lambs, I had to remove many rotted roots. I stabilized it the way you showed. All was good - new root growth, although I wasn't grave enough to remove all the mush roots. I again re-potted one, but I think I made a mistake. The rhizome is not sitting vertical in the pot. So my new root growth is taking place up the youngest pseudobulb. Called stepping-up? Should I re-pot again, or leave it alone?
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 8 лет назад
Hi, no I prefer not to use them, stakes work ok for me but if they might help you why not :) well some orchids are just climbers no matter what you do, if you can add some medium under the new growth you could try it, that's what I usually do. But other than that I just let them climb :) but depends on your situation I don;t know how it looks like.

Hi I have one cattleya that lost all of it's root and now it has many new roots from a new pseudobulb. My question is how the old pseudobulb is still green and still alive without any root while the new root will only feed the new pseudobulb?
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 9 лет назад
lavenderiasis Hi, simpodial orchids have psb that are connected through a rhizome. If one bulb gets fed it will feed the other ones connected to it. So not all bulbs need to have roots to be hydrated :)

I just bought a big-flowered Cattleya, a BLC Liu´s Joyance, and it has a sheath that is 5 cm and I think the flowerspike will soon be here. But it needs to be repotted. I wonder when I should repot it, should wait until the flowers had blomed or can I do it now?
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 9 лет назад
+Kreativitetskultur nu well first of all why do you say it needs to be repotted? you might be able to postpone it until the flowers are done :)
@kreativitetskulturnu9172
@kreativitetskulturnu9172 9 лет назад
+MissOrchidGirl Because it is strangely potted in the media. The old pseudobulbs are potted inside the media, so only half of the pseudobulb is over the media, the other half is under the media. At first I thought I got two different orchids in the same pot, because the pseudobulbs where in different hights. But when I looked closer I saw what the problem was. I have already removed as much media around the old pseudobulbs as possible. But they are still a bit under the media. So if I can wait I will wait. I just don´t want to get rot at the pseudobulbs. :)
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 9 лет назад
+Kreativitetskultur nu oh oh well yes that is a good reason to repot :) if canes are buried in the media they are prone to rotting indeed :) maybe you can dig them up a bit more for now

Hi, I have a question about cutting the roots on a Cattleya x Brassavola cross. On such an orchid, would you also recommend removing the roots from the older growths? Thanks!
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 7 лет назад
well.. depends what I see :) the older roots might be damaged or look already on their way out, in that case I would definitely cut them. But since this is more of a personal technique I cannot recommend you do it too, go with your judgement, see which roots are alive and which are dead, how they look like and leave them on if you think they should be on :)

If you bought a cattleya directly fr the grower and it's a mature plant, would you still repot or leave it in the medium they used? My current conundrum 😄
@boardergirl5172
@boardergirl5172 4 года назад
Retired Stitcher personally I always repot my orchids from any grower I buy them from. The only exception is if I buy an orchid in spike or in bloom. I wait for the blooming season to be done and then I repot. For example, I recently repotted a rhynchostylis gigantea I bought from my local orchid nursery. It was not in spike so I repotted it as soon as I brought it home. And I am so glad I did because I found that it had a snail infestation. So I cleared out all the snails and sprayed with hydrogen peroxide to kill off any eggs.

Hi Danny, I've recently purchased my first ever cattleya along with my first Zygo. , a miltassia, and a Sharry Baby. Since the cattleya has just finished blooming I plan to repot her into bark( she is currently in moss). So I have a few questions; 1st- Is it likely that her current roots will die off because of the new medium?( I know this is a risk when changing media but is it a rule?) and 2nd- When you repot oncidiums and intergenerics do you also cut off the roots from their old psb? Thank you.
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 8 лет назад
+Jenjiyo phriendjiyo hello, congrats on your new babies :) well.. just because I never know the state in which someone's orchid is I prefer to say many of the times they will kill their roots.. but after unpotting so many of mine.. it's pretty much a bit of a rule, many of the older roots die and all of the oldest roots die off :)) in any case, you might want to cut away everything very very old and from the newest 2-3 psb just look and see which are the stiffest, anything that has growing root tips leave it on. In a month or so after repotting sniff the medium and if it has a rotting smell.. they died :P with oncidiums it's not as bad I've seen.. again cut away the very very old roots if there are any and leave the new, stiff ones alone. Oncidiums usually cope with change better.. Dendrobiums seem to keep all of their roots most of the times :) but best thing to do is to sniff the medium after watering in about a month or so, if it smells pretty awful, something died in there.

So, the size of the roots dictates the size of the medium? I have a Cynodes Wine Delight directly from the greenhouse. Very fine bark and perlite, although the roots are not actually that thin (about half the width of a Phal. On the other hand, I have a Psychopsis Kalihi, with similar size roots potted in medium bark and moss. What sorts of plants need a very fine mixture? Maybe plants that like to stay moist and/or have very thin roots. What have been your observations?
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 8 лет назад
Hi Marcella, not all the time, for example for orchids who love water as much as Catasetums it doesn't really matter, they do well in full moss with a little care :) In general yes the thinner the roots are, the smaller the medium should be. But it also depends on the level of moisture they preffer. Paphs, Zygo, Catasetums and other moisture lovers seem to do ok in fine medium as well. Not the same story with Cattleyas since they preffer a lot of ventilation as well.

Hello Danni! I have got myself in a great deal of orchid trouble! While doing a mid week watering for my most vigorous and thirsty orchids by some stupid accident I done something really bad! Usually i spray the soil with some gentle insecticide, because i have some annoying fungus gnats and that keeps them at bay. I water the plants in the bath tube and spray, and by some stupid accident or being tired i grabbed the wrong bottle and sprayed my most wonderful Beallara Peggy Ruth and sprayed the soil with some bath cleaning chemicals! Lucky or unlucky it was just one spray and I immediately flushed the whole soil with so much water i could fill the bloody bath. But Im so worried the chemicals could stay in the soil and cause irreversible damage. Should I repot the orchid, like, straight away into new medium to avoid damage or wait a day and see if anything will happen? :(
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 9 лет назад
Robert Gębczyński Hi Robert, oh sorry to hear about the accident. I don't think you should go through all the trouble of repotting though, it depends on the media. If it was moss, then yes be thorough with rinsing, if it was bark all is well, it's not so fast absorbing as moss. If you flushed it well all is ok, you can actually soak it today in a separate bowl and throw away the water afterwards. I think all is well ;)

Hi Danni, I am receiving 2 bare-rooted Catteyas. Dowiana - previously in 4" pot and Willowbrook - 6" pot. I use Orchiata. Should I use the medium mix for both, or medium for the 4" and large chunks for 6". Or large chunks for both? Thanks
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 8 лет назад
Hi Marcella, honestly you will know when you see them :) even with Catts there is a difference in root thickness, there are some with quite thick roots and some with flimsy thin ones. The chunkier medium might be better for the thick rooted ones :)
@marcellamiller4439
@marcellamiller4439 7 лет назад
Okay, these orchids were the ones that were frozen in the refrigerator on transport. Nevertheless, I put them in ICU, and after a few weeks roots started growing. The Willowbrook was looking pretty good and sending out a new cane, so I potted that one (great success). The Dowiana Mossaie seemed a bit fussy, so I mounted it. It's doing really well, new roots and an eye. I don't want to keep it mounted though - when would be a good time to remove from bark and pot??
@Speedyfuzzball
@Speedyfuzzball 9 лет назад
Hi Danny, I'm in serious trouble with my orchids these days and was hoping you might have some advice to offer... I have 2 small bifoliate cattleyas that I repotted when I first got them. I used the method you described with soaking them in 3% hydrogen peroxide for 1 minute and letting it fizz. Then I potted them in bark media. Ever since then, all of the roots have turned dark, flat, and died off and the p bulbs have become very shriveled. No matter how much I water it, the plants continue to decline. I also have an oncidium who I repotted in the same manner and its p bulbs are slightly shriveling as well and one leaf is turning yellow. Just this morning, I discovered white mold growing on the media/roots where the slits of the pot are. I am really at a loss of what to do, I would really appreciate your input. Thanks for reading :)
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 9 лет назад
Speedyfuzzball Hi, if you say you have mold issues it might be that the media is staying too moist or is broken down. If it stays too moist maybe it's suffocating the roots. What type of media did you use? also when do you water? you can also send me a picture if you'd like, upload it to photobucket and send me the link in a comment, hopefully I can tell better what's going on :)
@Speedyfuzzball
@Speedyfuzzball 9 лет назад
Thanks so much for the reply! I am using bark media with both plants. I water the oncidium every 2-3 days and the cattleya around every 4 days. I'll try to link some pictures Oncidium. It might be hard to see but if you look at one of the bottom slits, you can see white mold i16.photobucket.com/albums/b8/speedyfuzzball/image.jpg2.jpg Wrinkling p bulbs i16.photobucket.com/albums/b8/speedyfuzzball/image.jpg3.jpg Cattleya has a new growth but the p bulbs are shrinking severely and the roots look dead i16.photobucket.com/albums/b8/speedyfuzzball/image.jpg1.jpg I am so sad :(
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 9 лет назад
Speedyfuzzball to be honest, I really don't think you have a serious issue, I can barely see the mold. If you just repotted the orchids it's normal for them to shrivel up a bit. The new growths will create a new root system that will hydrate the old bulbs as well. The Cattleya seems to me like it has some bad roots, but that might not be your fault, it depends how these orchids were when you purchased them. So to me, things don't look that bad, the pots seem ventilated, media looks ventilated, it might just be an adapting issue. So just make sure you water them regularly, don't let them stay dry too long but not soggy either and just let some new fresh air come in to the growing room, molds hate drafts and fresh air. As for the mold, this is how a mold outbreak looks like ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Mq5LFpbHOuo.html

your tutorials should be short and precise

+R Galatians thanks for writing, everyone has their own style on youtube, I find that if I make too short videos I miss out important information, I'd rather risk some people not liking my long videos than give incomplete information or skip on showing how exactly I cut a root ;) it's ok if this is not your style, there is someone for every taste on youtube :)

yeah but then, people would prefer short and brief tutorials, anyway..i respect that.

+R Galatians no worries, in a way you are right and when I will switch to a better camera and editing software I will inevitably get more compact videos, but when it comes to showing how things are done I just prefer to take my time and properly show in real time what I do, just doing what I wish I would have seen when I was a beginner :)
