I understand that you have a lot of experience, which means you know exactly when to water the orchids and when the medium is still too wet. But for the average orchid fan, planting an orchid in a non transparent pot, with only moss and without extra ventilation holes, means rotten roots in no time. The reason orchids are being planted in transparent pots is to be able to tell by the colour of the roots when it’s time to water. So if you’re a beginner please don’t use only moss as medium and please plant it in a transparent and well ventilated pot. The orchid will need watering when the roots become bright green/ grey.

Bright green/grey are two entirely different colors. This confuses me.

I made that mistake with my first phalaenopsis repot. I used bark chips for orchids but for some reason these were really huge pieces. I unpot it yesterday to check the roots and the roots weren't doing well at all half were like peeling off and dried off. Basically dead. Maybe initial repot shock from its new environment and back and forth it had. It was tortured by my colleagues and they put it into the work garden sand so I was like what the hell and tried to save it guess the damage was already done and probably just made it worse. I repot in a translucent pot, and a finer bark chip medium a better quality one. Haven't seen how the orchids deal with this medium long term though , i removed the keiki from the mother plant. A lot of the time if you don't have the experience with them you choose the wrong kind of pot which can also be detrimental to the orchid. I have no idea if the keiki will survive or the mother plant. The mother plant had a terminal spike on purchase . I also added extra drainage holes to all the pots I repot orchids in as it had the tiniest holes at the bottom and I felt like this was asking for trouble since I repot it in a solid plastic pot and the roots probably didn't get enough airation and also stayed too wet in the medium with a enclosed pot. So after all trauma she put out the keiki to save herself so will see what Happens.

@@SewWhittle it depends on the plant. This is why a transparent pot is important. You will be able to see how the roots start to change colour when the medium is drying. You will notice the weight of the pot, it will be lighter. Good luck 🤞🏻

@@noar6367 I am not expert in growing orchids, but I have had some experiences about growing orchids. I would agree with Noa R about repotting orchid in transparent pot (especially phalaenopsis) with orchid barks with a little moss covering at the top. I like to place the plastic pot inside a ceramic pot to keep the plant for easy to move around the house. The barks are for the orchid roots to hold on inside the pot. The reason for using the plastic pot is that you can see easily the condition of the roots and the medium in the pot before watering the orchid. Don't follow any advice about watering the orchid every week or every other week. It is really depending up the condition of the interior of the pot and the orchid roots or the outside environment of the orchid. You only water the orchid when you see the medium is drying out. Please remember to have holes around the pot and the bottom of the pot for bringing some air circulation into the roots and for draining water purpose. When the orchid needs watering, place the plastic pot in the lightly fertilized water container for 5 to 10 minutes. Make sure water is draining out of the pot after you remove the pot from the water container before placing it back to the ceramic pot. With plastic pot, you need to be careful with the high temperature during summer time. This is another reason, people likes to place the plastic pot inside a ceramic pot for protection the roots, in addition to decoration purpose. As suggested by Noa R, you will become expert by comparing the weight of the pot when the orchid pot is ready for watering or not. Experts can chime in to help out. Happy growing.

@@SewWhittle it confused me why he said that too as bright green indicates hydration. If they’re dry they’ll be silvery grey (I even water when they’re pastel green - very light in colour and mine are thriving) if that makes any sense.

Don't over water 🙁I am going to try one more time and if it doesn't make it that's it for me. Beautiful plant but made me really sad when mine died. Than got a mini and it was doing fine, why I thought I should repot it is beyond me, it died too.

OMG to see you force these roots into a black pot - breaking some of them in the process then stuffing moss only into the pot made me shout at the screen. That orchid is soon going to rot as it will hold far too much water.

Hi there. I have repotted by Phals a few times over the years and get flowers each year. The plants have gotten very 'long' in the stem (where the leaves attach) and I am curious if, when I repot next, I can cut the stem to get the plant to sit lower in the medium? I am looking to cut the part of the stem that is currently under the medium to make the plant shorter below the leaves. Thanks.

You are a lovely man but your information is wrong. Moss will develop root rot. Use clear pots to see the roots health. Humidity in your house plays a big factor.

Each time I buy new Phalaenopsis orchids- Dendrobium Orchids… I always repot in clear plastic pot - I can check the roots every day. I mix fine barks - moss…

Nonsense. The whole point why people prefer Orchiata bark, even when it's more expensive and more difficult to find, is exactly the fact that it doesn't break down as fast as fir bark does, and doesn't take up too much water. Want proof? Watch "The BIGGEST ORCHID on RU-vid?! Let me SHOW you my BLOOMING PHALAENOPSIS ORCHIDS!". If you had to replace Orchiata bark every year, then you're clearly not using Orchiata bark (even when you think you do), or were using bark pieces that were too small.
@lev2727

Secondly, don't push that spagnum moss in as hard as he does, or use too much, or you're going to create the same problems again in no time, it's simply shouldn't be as tight as in his video, are you get way too much water in your pot, and make it harder for roots to find their way, and reduce room for air!

I got a brand labeled as orchid bark a while back and the bark pieces were so huge. I repot the orchid I repot in that yesterday, so the new orchid bark was a lot different. Not sure if its better over time as this is the first time I'm using it. It was a colleagues orchid but it didn't do well in the big bark pieces.

Can you repot with moss and bark or do you have to choose one?
@hs-zd4ch
@hs-zd4ch 3 года назад
You can do both, but it depends on your conditions and how often you can water them. A mixture could be good because you'll get a little more water retention with the moss. I wouldn't recommend just moss if you tend to be a heavy handed waterer.

So this is basically how to put an orchid in a bigger pot: pull out orchid plug whole, put in bigger pot, fill empty space with media…. Really? No mention of inspecting and taking care of dead or rotten roots? And leaving on that tightly compacted suffocating moss plug?? disappointing video.
