I've got a problem where something on the side plate is bent, and when the brake goes on, the plastic bit doesn't engage with the 3 spoke metal thing, unless I loosen the two nuts. I haven't worked out what is bent.

Thanks Steve for this video. I wish your channel was around years ago. I made the same mistake as you mentioned. I took it to a shop where the mechanic said "I don't know if I can fix it, but I have to charge you $70.00 an hour with no guarantees." I walked out of his shop and ordered a new cover. The reason why I started learning how to fix engines is because of the shitty & expensive service in my area. I bought tools, books and now watch your videos. Now I mock the local shops and fix my engines and my neighbors for free. Thanks for your videos and keep em' commin'.

Steve, as a newbie to the world of chainsaws. I did EXACTLY what you described regarding the clutch cover removal. Used my Husqvarna Rancher 460 for the 2nd time this past weekend, did not check the chain tension on day 2 and lost the 24" chain that came with the chainsaw. (I was looking for an excuse to buy an Oregon chain 😎) I pried the cover off with a flathead. Purchased a new chain, installed it on the bar and sprocket and the damn cover wouldn't seet properly. I was prepared to take my new Husqvarna into the local shop for repair. I tell friends of mine constantly that any information that you need regarding product knowledge and how-to's - you can most likely find on youtube. I came back into the house after closing up the shop, sat down and decided I would try to find a video similar to the problem I was having. Yours was the first one that came up. Everything you described in the beginning of that video was spot on regarding my situation. I did just as you suggested and got it to mount flush. The doggone thing is working 100% now. Thank you very much for doing this video. You saved me from the walk of shame at the local repair shop.

After running Stihl saws for years, recently bought a Husqvarna 550XP, after taking apart to do routine maintenance and cleaning, and reassembly makes me appreciate the simplicity of Stihls, won’t buy anymore Husqvarna. Stihl just makes it simple and easy, internal clutch is much easier to mount bar/chain, take apart/reassemble.

Thank you Steve. I just used your technique on a '16 562XP...yep, some genius pulled the cover off with the brake engaged. He swears it was half-cocked and wouldn't release. He then used a screwdriver to persuade it off the rest of the way. I cleaned it out really good and reset it your way. It was super gooped up and acting like glue. It's still very cold here and I'm using winter weight bar oil, and not cutting any conifer. No pay raise, bonuses or any new tools for that guy until he pays it off...extra firewood cutting and hand splitting for him! :). You saved my bacon.

I just bought a 450 Rancher. When I took it home to assemble the bar etc, I got ahead of the instructions and had to pry the side cover off as the chain brake was locked. Of course I couldn't get the cover back on.....took it to the dealer and they took it out back to reset the spring. I didn't watch. Then I went 3 hours away to tackle some trees blown over by hurricane Ian. My chain came off so I had to remove the side cover. I knew there was a procedure to follow. I forgot to release the brake, pried it off and was in a pickle without the ability to reset it. Steve, this video saved me a lot of grief using the first method you showed, even though I had to return home with the problem . Even better, the cover was on with moderate tension on the nut. Pulling the brake handle back did it. How easy! Thanks Steve!

Thanks man! I took my Husky Rancher 455 out today to clear a fence line and this is exactly what happened when I was cleaning my saw. I was enroute to my dealer to see what the problem might be when I stopped and thought, this has to be a simple thing. RU-vid it! I turned around and went home ...and there was your video! I just got in from an afternoon of productive work with my saw thanks to you! Have another beverage of the day on me!

A cell phone and this video kept the day from being wasted for some friends clearing downed trees on a neighbor's lot today. I stopped to say hello, and they showed me the problem they had been fighting for an hour or so. I searched Steve's channel, and 10 minutes later, the saw was running. It can be done without the beer, which is a good thing, because, hey, there are chainsaws involved! I left, but heard later there were a few brews consumed after the loading, transport, and unloading. Thanks , Steve!

After prying the cover off my chainsaw because it just wouldn't come off....I couldn't get it to go back on. Spent about 20 minutes trying to figure out why my cover had suddenly changed shape and no longer fit my chainsaw. This video is EXACTLY what I did. Thank you for saving me a trip to the shop and probably $100. What an amazing channel.

This vid saved my bacon this afternoon. Saw works like a champ again! Thanks. Steve!! A hint for the unwary---make sure the back plate is on over the spring assembly. If you don't, that spring will pop out and fly across the shop. I managed to find it pretty quickly, and then spent an hour getting it back in.

Outstanding easy to understand, could not get the side cover back on. I could see that the spring needed reset. followed the instructions and the brake reset allowing me to easily slide the side cover back on. This video saved me from taking it in to be fixed. Like I mentioned I could see the problem but did not know the fix. This saved me a of hassle and money. Thanks for a great video that was short and to the point!

Steve nailed it again. Love the thorough explanation. When we do somewhat dumb things (like taking off chainsaw cover the wrong way), it's good to have the fix easily shown. Now, time to actually do it and get back to work. Thanks, Steve.

I was going to try a crows foot and breaker bar...figured I'd do a search first. At least now I know what size to grab. Rarely have I had any luck putting one back on the case. What happens with these is more of a brake half engaging. The handle is halfway between locked and unlocked so you don't see it. If the cover hasn't been off in awhile or if you are working with dirty stuff you sometimes need a slight nudge with a screw driver to get the cover off. If you feel pressure, you stop and check the brake but we aren't prying the cover off, the half engaged brake snaps shut as the cover comes off. It's happened to me 3 times on 2 different ranchers. Love your videos, thanks for posting them.

I have an Echo CS-620P. It's got the internal chain brake so I've never had an issue when removing the sprocket/clutch cover. Well I recently bought a Husqvarna 440e. I was gonna remove the sprocket/clutch cover on it, but when I attempted to it had tension on it and I had a bad feeling something wasn't right so I left it on. Thank-goodness I did. This video just saved me from a lot of aggravation. Just the video I was looking for. Thanks Steve!

Really useful video. I was tearing my hair out and your video helped me to understand not just what to do but also to figure out how it all works. Interestingly, having unlocked the brake the side panel still didn't want to slip over the drum, but a nudge with a screwdriver got the band into place. I would not have guessed to do that either without your illuminating video! Thanks again Steve

Steve, steve, steve, where were you ten minutes ago? I watched ten videos about removing the side cover, none addressed releasing the brake. The manual didn’t either. I did get the cover off eventually using a plastic vehicle trim tool. Then your video appeared in my feed…. 😭😭😭😭😭 You are a national treasure. Another five minute job taking hours.
