Got Hot Water? If your water heater is giving a error for Flammable Vapor Sensor then keep reading and watch this video! Fortunately this error code can be reset and hot water can be restored in less than one hour. The reset procedure will vary depending on which gas valve you have - I've listed all the popular models below.
Before attempting to reset the gas control, you must be certain to remove any substances that may have caused the FV sensor to activate and air out the area near the water heater thoroughly for at least one hour. The FV sensor must also be dry. Once you’ve determined there are no flammable vapors or liquids near the water heater, you may reset the gas control.
Flammable Vapor Lockout Error
1. If you cannot perform the work safely, then have a service technician replace this part.
2. Turn power to the water heater off. Thoroughly check the area near the water heater for any substances that may give off flammable vapors. If you find any flammable vapors or liquids near the water heater, remove them. Open doors and windows and air out the location for at least one hour. Once you are certain the area is clear of any flammable vapors or liquids and the sensor has been replaced, you may reset the gas control.
3. The FV sensor can also lock the gas control if it is exposed to certain non-flammable vapors such as ammonia, bleach, air fresheners, or other “smelly” chemicals. Remove any such substances located near the water heater. Open doors and windows to air out the location for at least one hour.
4. In rare cases, moisture in the air or direct contact with water can cause the gas control to lockout. If the FV sensor gets wet, you'll have to replace it. If your water heater has been flooded, do not attempt to reset the gas control. And contact phone number on the side of your water heater.
5. If you've gone through the FV Sensor reset procedure before but the sensor continues to activate, you'll need to have a service technician look at the water heater to determine the issue.
Honeywell Control Reset Procedure
1. Turn the gas control switch to off for at least two seconds
2. Turn the power switch back on and allow three seconds for the gas control to initialize and self-check.
3. In the next 30 seconds, Increase the temperature setting past the “HOT” mark, then back to “VAC.” Do this twice. Then return the dial to the preferred set point. "HOT" is recommended to reduce the risk of scalding.
4. Wait 10 seconds and see if the fault will clear. If the gas control is reset successfully and there are no flammable vapors near the water heater, the control will resume normal operation.
5. If the gas control fails to reset, air out the room again and repeat steps 1 - 3. If the gas control fails to reset after several attempts, call the manufacture or a licensed and qualified professional.
Intelli-vent Control Reset Procedure
1. Turn off power to the water heater and wait at least one minute.
2. Turn power to the water heater back on and immediately (within 10 seconds) press and hold both the HOTTER and COOLER buttons until the green VACATION LED light begins to flash.
3. Release the HOTTER and COOLER buttons and immediately press and hold the HOTTER and COOLER buttons again until the green VACATION LED light is steady (NOT FLASHING). When the green VACATION LED is steady, release both buttons.
4. If the gas control reset was successful, all LED lights on the gas control will light briefly then go out. At this point, the water heater should be working normally. No LEDs are lit when the water heater is working normally.
5. If the gas control fails to reset, air out the room again and repeat steps 1 - 4. If the gas control fails to reset after several attempts, call the manufacture or a licensed and qualified professional.
Robertshaw Gas Valve:
1. Turn the manual lever on the Control Gas Valve counter clockwise until it snaps to the "ON" position.
2. Keep the temperature dial on VACATION.
3. Plug in the power cord and turn on blower switch and wait 3 seconds for the system self-diagnostic check.
4. Within the first 30 seconds, the temperature dial must be rotated back and forth crossing the 120° F mark at least six times.
5. This will reset the Control Gas Valve and cause it to display a normal flash code for the LED on the left bottom of the Control Gas Valve. Note: Slow blinking is the normal flash code.

OMG Mikey you are a life saver! I was able to reset my flammable vapor sensor on my AO Smith water heater because of this awesome video. Thank you so much! Too bad I already took a cold shower this morning, at least everyone else will have a hot shower lol. I followed your instructions for resetting the flammable vapor sensor starting at 9:03 in your video and water heater started right up woohoo! Oh and yes we just had our roof replaced, so when they ripped off all the old roofing, the amount of dust and debris that fell into the garage and covered everything, was shocking and foul, we had to take everything out and clean it off thank heaven for our shop vac!

Rheem has those vapour sensors as well as Bradford white and gsw brands. You don't always have to replace them. If you have a multimeter tester, you can pull the sensor off and use the tester to check resistance. The range it should fall in is between 3k and 100k ohms. My rule of thumb if it reads under 60k ohms I'll reset the valve and all is good and hot water is restored. If it's 80k or higher I replace it. It won't take much of a smell to throw it off again. Some people think it's a stupid sensor,but it's there for a reason it will save your life one day if you ever have a gas leak. I went to a customer's house with that same scenario and I walk into the basement and I smell gas. I look down and tank is off on vapor sensor lockout. We found the leak and fix it ,but if it weren't for that sensor who knows what may have happened.

wow thanks a lot for the vid- i came across a similar issue with a customer i called ao tech support said i need to replace gas valve. customer was hesitant as its an expensive repair for a relatively new water heater , he got ao smith tech to come down to fix it - customer described to me exactly what you did here to reset it. in my case it probably needed a reset ( as they were doing home renovations) . i guess ao smith could have mentioned this little “trick” when i was talking to them before recommending replacing gas valve

Thank ls man, I was looking all over how to reset this thing. Im an HVAC/R and plumbing tech. We don't stock these sensors. So I threw a dixell sensor on it to get em thru the weekend. That reads 15k OHMS most the time so they work. And I know everyone has a few of those on their van. A bunch of our restraunts have these water heaters right next to the mop sink. So the sensors get wet.

Hello from the great state of Michigan

Just read an article where a power company declared a power emergency where too much power was being used during a heatwave in colorado. The power company locked out its customer's thermostats and prevented them from cooling their house that day. That should be a concern of all smart thermostat owners in the future as to the government or private companies beeing allowed to do this. To be fair these power customers volunteered for this program.
@snidelywhiplash8923
@snidelywhiplash8923 Год назад
It's always a good idea to have facts before getting outraged. There's a VOLUNTARY program in Colorado (and in other locations) where customers CAN CHOOSE to participate in thermostat cutbacks (not turn-offs) on days of high power demand, in return for cash. Don't want to do it, don't do it. This is called load shedding. The alternative to proper management is to either have rotating blackouts (areas turned off completely) or to have the systems crash. Which approach do you prefer?

they could just do rolling blackouts instead of stopping cooling. then you can enjoy hours of no electric at all and short on periods that never allow the refrigerator to recover enough and all your food spoils. pretty much your choice by allowing them to control it or not and forcing them to load reduce the bad way. 🤣 and the government wants you/us all to have electric everything, a big show of how stupid that is will occur sooner than later, much worse than the Texas freezup.

Wouldn't it be better if the exhaust vent extended out some inches from under the overhang? Wouldn't seem like a good thing to expose the underside to a pretty regular stream of hot, humid air. That dryer vent is a mess. If that house has a new owner, I would have thought looking at such things would be a standard step for a home inspector. Problem diagnosis (whether the broken flap or the obviously clogged line) doesn't require much training. Thanks

@@PipeDoctor If you by yourself were putting in a new install, where would the exhaust pipe end? ;-)
@throttlebottle5906
@throttlebottle5906 Год назад
dryer venting in unconditioned/outdoor space is a big no-no, it will condensate on the inside(and outside), the lint builds up inside very fast and clogs, killing the dryer thermal cutoff(non-resettable) now you need appliance service and will tear it out and start over again. it may work in Arizona, where it's always hot and dry climate.
@snidelywhiplash8923
@snidelywhiplash8923 Год назад
@@throttlebottle5906 " it will condensate on the inside". I think you mean "condense" Where else would you vent a dryer other than outside into "unconditioned, outdoor space"? That's where they all go. My comment asked about whether the termination of the exhaust line (not dryer line) under the overhang was a good idea. Maybe you're saying the exhaust line shouldn't extend so far beyond the wall of the structure?
@throttlebottle5906
@throttlebottle5906 Год назад
@@snidelywhiplash8923 I thought you meant the dryer exhaust, extending that outside the building will clog the pipe very fast. as for the water heater exhaust, it will cause very minimal compared to the dryer vent being under there, which also shouldn't be near the gas meter(no vents/intakes should be nearby) the water heater is probably far enough away being extended outside, condensation inside it's pipe would be ok, as long as it's pitched properly for drainage. a sag or bow could make it ice dam.
