How to reset the service light on the Volvo 850, 1993, 1994 and 1995 year models. - Auto Care Series

This video will show you how to reset the SERVICE light in the 1993, 1994, and 1995 Volvo 850 cars. A7-4-1-5-1
These cars have an OBD-1 diagnosis tool under the hood near the ECU box. The light comes on every 5,000 miles to remind you to have the oil changed.
*** This procedure only works with the VDO cluster. If you have the Yazaki cluster (tach goes to 8000 rpms) you will need to pull the faceplate plug and poke something through there to reset the reminder.
The 1996 - 1998 Volvo 850's and S/V70's have a maintenance light system that requires a special OBD-II scanner to reset the light, found at the dealer and/or a specialty independent Volvo repair shop. One can be found online for purchase for $70+ US dollars. Most people simply take the bulb out, it's only an oil change reminder.

I agree, pull the bulb. I always suggest that people get their oil change schedule on the 5,000 mark. 115,000, 120,000, 125,000, that way there is no need to calculate. Then I put the last mileage change on the filter. So, if anyone has a question if it's been done, all they have to do is look under the car at the filter and they will see the date and mileage.

Unfortunately it does not. The OBD-I port was discontinued after the '95 models. You need a special tool to shut off the light. Most people simply remove the bulb.

Thank You! You mean that the same procedure for the service light, it will also turn the lambda light out. Good, I'll try it next time. I normally disconnect the battery cable and live it for two or three days and than when reconnect back the light turns out. I think this light often goes on just because our fuel here constantly changes the gas mixture ratio of anhydrous alcohol depending on season we are.. But at least we don't have leaded gasoline! Usually you can leave the battery disconnected for 30 minutes, that will do it. Or you can disconnect the negative cable, tough it to the positive cable, and it will discharge the car's computer.

As long as it's not a problem in the ECU. I did pull one out of the junk yard for my car because the jump wire was on it's last leg. It plugs in pretty easy.

So, so much clearer, easier to follow than Haynes' manual which I gave up trying to follow after many frustrating and embarrassing attempts (it seemed to panic me unnecessarily trying to recognise the light flashes).. Prior to doing this, I noted on paper all your steps with drop down arrows at key points with expected outcomes in parentheses. Your method worked a treat 'first' time Robert. Many thanks.

Robert DIY check this out Robert- So, I went to my local garage here in cedartown, ga.-- after watching this video , about how to reset the service light...I wrote down the instructions, as I watched your video.. and rechecked my instructions, per watching your video.. I took myself and the instructions, down to the garage, the mechanic said he’s got a lot of years tinkering with Volvos... I asked him to reset the service .light... he couldn’t figure it out... I whipped out my instructions, and read them to him... guess what? Goodbye service light, see you on 5,000 miles! You the man... I sent you a friend request on face book....

The CEL is different. What you have to do to clear it is to read the codes and after all codes have been read hold the button down for 5 seconds and it will clear all the codes. So, put the jump wire in port 3, press the button 1 time and it will fash a code to you. 3-1-4. Push the button again and it will show you another code, 3-1-6. After it goes back to first code you can hold the button down for 5 seconds to clear all the codes. You may have to check different ports to check for codes.

There is a special OBD2 tool that you can purchase for about $75. I would just pull the bulb. Volvo uses a special tool. I'm considering buying one and loaning it out.

Should have a plug in the odometer. Pull the rubber plug, then stick something through the hole to press the reset button.

Thanks a ton for this. I have been racking my brain for the longest time on how to reset this . I believe it is set on the computer to come on every 5k, because typically, thats when we should all get oil changes and at the time, we could only get that light turned off at the dealer, because no-one knew much about Volvo's. Robert, I have a 1994 850. This procedure did not work. However, there is a little rubber grommet button on the instrument cluster plastic cover to the left of the 10 MPH mark by the speedometer. With the ignition switch on and using a pen tip, I gently push on the button. The light goes out. Do not push too hard on the grommet or it will end up on the inside of the plastic. (yes I did this and fished it out.) Thanks for all your help! I used you're timing belt video and all was good.

Take the instrument cluster out and remove the bulb for the service light. I too have a 1996 850, but I DON'T need the computer to remind me when to change to oil! I know when I've driven 5000 miles! Haha

What year model car do you have? If it's a pre-'96 car you can do it with the tool under the hood. If it's a post '95 car you will need to do it with a scanner or disconnect the battery for 30 minutes.

That means there is NO code in that port. Try your other ports 1 at a time. When you find the post with the codes that are causing the CEL, Clear it.

No, there is no trick to the video. LOL I did it myself just 2 days ago. Maybe there is something broken with your system. Remove the box, it simply pulls up, check the wires to make sure none of the wires are broken. Does the light come on at all?

Hey Robert, I got the problem that sometimes the Service light comes on for a few minutes (Most of the time cold starts for some weird reason) and then turns off. A guy in our town thats knows 850 quite well, couldn't find anything on his OBD scanner... Maybe somewhere in that module a loose connection or dirt or should I just reset it, when the light is on? The car is a 1995 Volvo 850 Turbo

You most have a short somewhere. Pull the ECU and see if the light goes out. Is that the only port that makes tye light stay on?

You can look under the battery tray to see if it is there. You can also check the VIN on the Volvo website. The VIN has a code in it for EGR, AIR PUMP, ETC.

Incorrect. Volvo used a tool that plugged into the OBDII port inside the vehicle and from time to time I see them on Craigslist and eBay for between $30 to $75. But yes, you CAN pull the bulb if you so choose.

Robert, I did what you had instructed, but in my 1995 Volvo 850 SW, I cannot see the led blink or lit after the time that you specified. You can unplug the box and look at the wiring to it and the jump wire.

Robert DIY Dear Robert, I found out how to reset the Service Light from my 1995 Volvo 850. I found those instructions: Switch the ignition on. As you look at the speedometer on the dash, beneath it opposite the trip reset button is a rubber plug. Remove the plug and with a thin pointer such as a ball point pen, depress the pin. This will reset the service light. I guess it you works on 1996 to 1998 models too. Best regards! Yuri

I don't understand the question. If you have the boxes under the hood you can reset the light, if you do NOT have the boxes under the hood, it will take a special tool to reset it.
