Ask This Old House general contractor Tom Silva trims a front door that’s getting caught on a homeowner’s entry rug.
SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse
Time: 3-4 hours
Cost: $50
Skill Level: Moderate
Tools List for Resizing an Exterior Door:
Measuring tape
Hammer
Pencil
Track saw
Block plane
Paint brush
Table saw
Grinder
Chisel
Brad nailer
Shopping List:
Medium grit sandpaper
Primer
1x6” red oak
Stain
Rags
Wood glue
Headless brad nails
Steps:
1. Take the door off the hinges.
2. Mark the bottom of the door about _” and cut it with a track saw. Sand the edges of the door a little bit and ease the edges with a block plane.
3. Prime the bottom of the door with some paint and a paintbrush to protect the raw wood.
4. Rehang the door.
5. Measure the gap between threshold and the door on both sides.
6. Cut the red oak to size based on the measurements between the door and the threshold using a table saw. This will become a filler piece for the threshold.
7. Grind off any finishes on the top of the threshold. Use a chisel to get the varnish out of the corners between the threshold and the jamb.
8. Place the filler piece on top of the threshold and close the door to ensure it fits properly. Then, mark where the edge of the door lands on the filler piece and mark it with a pencil.
9. Bevel the edges of the filler piece on the table saw.
10. Stain the piece and let it dry.
11. Secure the filler piece to the threshold with wood glue and brad nails.
Resources:
To cut the bottom of the door, Tom uses a circular saw that rides on a track, known as a track saw, which can be purchased at the local home center. By using the track, it protects the finish of the door and speeds up the cutting process.
Tom uses a table saw to cut a bevel on the inside edge of the door threshold, it can be purchased at the local home center.

NICE SAW SETUP BUT AN EXPENSIVE OVERKILL unless you use one everyday for a living. The saw in this video will set you back around $400. A standard circular saw (which many of you already have) and a straight edge clamped to the door will work just as well. First cut half way through the door then flip the door over and make the second cut the other half way through. This should give you a smooth finish on both sides. Use a metal cutting blade if your door is metal clad like most exterior doors have to be by code requirements except this one!
@jamesdarnell8568
@jamesdarnell8568 4 года назад
Yes, track saws are expensive. So are table saws, which Tommy also used. But Tommy already had those tools because he is a professional and he does use them every day. Should you spend $1,000 on tools just to fix a door if you are never going to use them again? Of course not; you would call a professional carpenter to come fix your door and pay him. Should you spend $1,000 on tools just to fix a door if you are going to use them repeatedly for many years? Of course you should. And you should always buy high quality tools that will last years.
@tribulationprepper787
@tribulationprepper787 4 года назад
@@jamesdarnell8568 Should you spend $1,000 on good tools to do a job if a contractor is going to charge you $2,500 to do that job for you? HELL YES... And that is why I have a garage full of yellow and black everything you can think of and a load of personal satisfaction under my belt. As far as a track saw is concerned, I haven't found enough of a need for one yet to warrant giving up on my circular saw and my 8 foot straight edge.

Yes, great work. I debate the time element. Going to the store, getting the exact materials, i.e. stain., setting up tools, breaking down tools,etc. And the whole misleading statement in the section below the video about equipment and materials particularly the track saw. Cannot buy that at the Home Depot or Lowe's. That is the Festool. The saw and track guide I am guessing is minimum $800.00 and suppose to be used with their vac system.

I was at place today that had a similar modification, they do have a sign to warn you of the extra bump. Looks beautiful but it is a tripping point. I can imagine though some type of fairly simple system that would allow for a seal to drop down and lift up during door operations. This idea is absolutely doable lets just hope the inventor keeps the price in check. Could and should be worked to be an internal component and optional external component. I can see people heading for the drawing board or CAD program.

Unless you use it every day, its too expensive and is a waste of money that could be better spent on a good blade for your current saw, this is a Festool, which are great quality tools. Just use 2 clamps and a level to use as a guide with any normal circular saw. Clamp the level with the right offset for your blade and cut a straight line without spending any extra money.

The homeowners want the rug, so that lets that out of the program. Nice to be able to cut the bottom of the door off when you have a thousand dollar tool to do the job. Me... I've used a piece of plywood - clamped to the door - for a straightedge many times. Yeah... you've got to build that threshold up. Use a plain old seal on the bottom of the door. Those things that retract into the door bottom are nothing but an all-around pain in the butt.

Teachers couldn't figure out how to troubleshoot a basic valve system. One teacher almost in tears because she "broke" the blinds and was worried about getting in trouble. (first year teacher... She was 25) had pulled the draw string to hard and over... Daily repeated use of the blind finally pulled them out of the mounting brackets. Asked her if she had ever done anything with blinds prior... She looked confused and I shit you not "I've only live in an apartment" I was called into a classroom because a science lab started a fire.... Let me say that again... I was called to put out a firreeee. Classroom evacuated? Nope. Fire extinguisher in the designated science lab? Nope. Why was the fire extinguisher not in its mount? Because the teacher thought it looked ugly. Might be biased... This isn't entirely a Millenial issue... I work with women of all ages. This is a coddling issue.

Yes door thresholds always present a tripping hazard, but you'd he surprised at how lenient building codes are regarding threshold height. You're allowed 7-3/4" max height from either the inside or outside on exterior doors. In flood prone or hurricane areas you're required to have a 3.5" minimum threshold height. Quite the tripping hazard!
