Oh my goodness how gorgeous! The couple imperfections you spotted will just give it character! I'm so happy you young kids are doing this home adventure! You just don't see that much in younger generations. So proud of you two!

Please leave the hearth as is! The cast iron polish works fine and the imperfections show provenance! Great work. Lots of patience!

Thank you! As of now, no. Previous owners knocked the chimney off and put the roof over it. I would love to get it fixed in the future and make it usable.

I am so impressed! You did a great job, and it turned out fantastic! As far as the imperfections go - well, who doesn't get to be that age without a few scars?! It's called character. The only piece of advice to you is to please purchase and wear knee pads. Thirty years from now, your knees will thank you!

Wow - what a difference, it cleaned up so well. It's very pretty. I actually like it original and natural, don't think you need to tile the floor area. Never heard of cast iron oil, you're teaching us a lot through your process. Nicely done! Note - was concerned you didn't use eye protection when sanding, could have been paint and metal chips.

You can add a layer of wax to slate. I remember my mom used beeswax for our slate floors they last forever if taken care of. Great Job!! Enjoy your channel and moved over here from the Gram.

Thank you so much! As of now it isn't a working fireplace. The previous owners tore the chimney down and covered the chimney opening with the roof. I would love to get it fixed and make it usable in the future.

Are you certain that is slate? It looks like it might be soapstone.

I'm not 100% sure. We were told it was slate.

@@LewisAcresHomestead Soapstone was more commonly used in that sort of application. You can use mineral oil on it to give it a nice sheen. You can buy it wherever stone countertops are sold and could replace the broken hearth piece some day. It's not terribly expensive

Wow, that looks great! Nice job! I like the hearth as is, it seems to go well with the fireplace. Hope you get to feeling better quickly, seems to be a lot of the "creeping crud" (as we call it) going around so far this winter. Have a great holiday, if we don't "cross paths" before then, but hoping you may have a Christmas video for us fans. ♥

Are any of the fireplaces usable? To show it's age, the fireplace should have a knick or two to show for it's service in the past. Love what you've done with the house so far especially the kitchen. So glad you didn't use the cabinets that were there. You are definitely my most favorite home renovation site! Best wishes to you and your families in the coming New Year.

As of right now no. One chimney has been capped off and the other has alot of structural issues that needs fixed. We're hoping to get it fixed in the future. Thank you so much!
