Did this with my e39, a 2001 525i. I didn't have fog near where this guy had it, still decided to do the full process for the best results and honestly, i wasn't expecting much for how cheap it was all together. But the difference is crazy in person, looks brand new and is still OEM! great tutorial!

after the whole operation must apply a protective film , because after a certain period of time,the headlights glass will deteriorate again , because they no longer have the layer of protective varnish . Another solution would have been to apply two coats of varnish them,after you have finished with sandpaper .

Nice work, just done the same thing but only up to 1200 grit. How do the lens look with the headlights turned on. I still have a bit of cloudiness and fine scratches when the bulbs are shining through? I'm off to get some finer grit paper tomorrow? Got some water stain on the inside of the covers as well I'm not sure how to deal with?

Do you actually have to remove it? Can you just clean it while it’s intact with the car?

@PanziAss 5 лет назад
if you leave it on the car, just tape around the headlight so you dont risk scratching the body paint

Nice video. If you do want to hit it with varnish/lacquer- do you have any recommendations for what kind, number of coats etc?

Bimmermerchant is it OK to go with 600, 1200 and then 2000 grit? Will I still get the same results?

I did 800, 1500 and 3000 and hand polished with turtle wax polish. Looks as good as new.

The fogging on that headlight is very severe. I am not sure what weather conditions your car must have been exposed to in order to get like that but it must be bad. Mine wasnt half as bad as this, but I watched the video and thought... WOW, I want my headlights to look that good. So I bought some wet and dry, some stockinette (polishing cloth) and some Meguiars PlastX (which I had heard good things about). Was half expecting it to be a couple of hours of hard work but I thought I would just give the PlastX a go before taking my headlights out and sanding them down. Wow, I neededn't have bothered with the sandpaper. After only about of minute of polishing with the PlastX, the improvement was already massive. Not going to bother sanding them, and I recommend to anyone reading this that if yours are not as bad as those shown in this video, that you just give something like PlastX a try first. Perhaps for seriously foggy headlights like shown in the video, you might need to resort to more drastic measures like sanding them down with wet and dry, so kudos to the poster for that, but even then I would just try something like PlastX first. You never know, it might save you some cash and elbow grease. Mine is a 99 E39, so it's had plenty of time to wear hard too. I noticed at the end of the video that on the workbench just behind the finished headlight, is a bottle of PlastX too.

Looks nice, too bad you did it all wrong! They start to get hazy when you do them this way after a few months, then you have to do it all over again. Easier just to wet sand with 400 grit, clean it off with alcohol, and spray it with a high quality clear coat with a hardener. You can buy it in a spray can. Did mine that way years ago and they're still perfect!

@@bimmermerchant I'm just saying this because I've done both and the polishing method is a constant battle. Always repolishing to keep them looking good. The other method has been a more permanent solution and there is a lot less work and time involved. Try it for yourself, just make sure you don't use a cheap clear coat. Good clear coats can be bought for around $20 with an activated hardener right in the can. The one I bought was 368 0061 2K clear. Tough stuff and coats really evenly.

So is it bad if i sand up to 1000 grit?
@trickity6172
@trickity6172 9 лет назад
I don't get it, the first headlight you showed us is the LH side, you said you will sand it and share the result but at 1:09 the RH side headlight is being worked on. hum....

worst thing you could do. clear will start to crack in a couple days and headlight cover will look worst.
