Please Help support this channel VIA PayPal So I can continue to improve and make quality videos and make product reviews to help save you or someone else time and money. goo.gl/KUwgNi
In this video I show you how to re thread a stripped bolt hole in a cylinder head on a lawn mower but also can be performed on anything. I demonstrate how to go about getting the correct bolt size and how to pick the kit you need.
Now I mentioned in the video that you should nt use an impact to install bolts, that was wrong. I meant to say is that you should not use impacts to install nuts and bolts on critical things like cylinder heads, intake manifolds, sensors and various soft materials like aluminum and plastic.
Thanks for watching, I hope this video helps. Please help fund for future how to videos and reviews. Every little bit helps. Thank you / handymanpf Handyman Problem Fixer

I broke the coil while tightening one of the bolt of my new exhaust manifold. Yap the bolt just keeps on turning after that. It was fixed now. I ended up replacing the washer with a thinner one just to chase the remaining coil.

After watching I can't tell you how many videos for the helicoil installation, you are the first to tell me HOW to find out what size I needed to buy. I am sure there must be another video or two that gives that information but it has been frustrating seeing how to install one but not know how to decide the size to buy. This was really great. Thanks for the help and Jesus bless.

That was a great video. When tapping the bolt hole, I've noticed that the thread chips will break into smaller pieces if you unthread about a quarter turn for every turn that you thread the tap in. It results in a stronger threading and less stress on the cut. Also, you'' be able to tap the hole with less effort

i read many comments on how he should have tapped the hole by turning and then back, he did say it was an alum head which for sure is very soft compared to steel, i myself thought he was going to deep with the new threads, but this video does gives people the idea how to fix a bad hole, heli coil

use cutting oil, WD40 spray will do, and each time you make a full turn clockwise do a half turn anti just to break the metal chips, just makes it a bit easier and less chance of error...but you did a good job anyway so I guess you have done it before!!

You can use the wrench shown in the video, of course, but you'll have an easier time of it using (1) A 12-point socket and ratchet, (possibly with an extension); (2) The closed end of a combination wrench; OR (3) A die handle from a tap-and-die set. I prefer the latter, but you need lots of space to turn it, which you may not have in constricted areas. However, it provides you a means to evenly distribute the force (think of it as a large T-handle wrench).

When tapping it's best to turn forward a full turn then back half a turn to "break the chip" of the threads that you're cutting. By simply running it straight through you put a lot of stress on your tap, and removing a broken tap turns a bad day into a shitty day.

Nah - that's easy, you just need to get one of those drill bits that can cut a beautifully straight core through a little chunk of hardened steel with a splintered-off top. I forget the brand of those bits, but they're usually on the shelf next to the broken camshaft glue.

Nice video. Just a note that on the insert tool has a collar with a grub screw which you can lower to the top of the insert. This acts as a stop so you don't put the insert in any deeper than you need to, which can easily be done. If it is too deep. in some applications, the bolt may only be caught on a couple of threads of the insert, which is not enough. Also, you need to break the tang at the bottom when it's inserted. Just take the tool out slightly, turn 90 degrees, and tap it with a hammer/wrench/heavy-ish object :-)

you need to break off the install tab and take it out, also before installing heli coil you put on some red tread locker, otherwise next time you take the bolt out the heli insert will come out with it. I am surprise the little inspector who was watching in the beginning of the video did not say something and let you continue. He shows interest that is good.

I'm goimg to drill the 1/2 inch portion with a 14.5mm drill and them use a 14mm hand tap (plug type). Any opinion? Wont hold you to it if I screw up (lol). Also. are the coils necessary ? I sort of agree, he got the job done but the method was a bit careless and could easily have gone wrong. He should have removed the head before doing any drilling, leaving it on the engine like that is asking for trouble. The metal shavings could have easily gotten into the engine, especially when removing the paper towels AND using the air gun to blow them off. You could see the left port was exposed. The drilling and subsequent re-threading should be done using some sort of assembly that holds your tools at the right angle and prevents movement. I have to say this is a good example of non-professional backyard mechanics. I think the guy know what he's doing and he's got experience but what also shows through is the slack, approximate way of getting things done.

That is standard practice for anyone cutting new threads. The purpose to backing it up frequently is to break the thread material (slivers of fine metal) so they release and come out through the relief slots cut into the tap or die. If you didn't, you'd soon lock up the tap/die with slivers and be unable to proceed.
@emc2184

AND, ... you could break the tap itself, inside the job making it a really, REALLY SHITTY job to carry on with.

@frandanco6289
@frandanco6289 3 года назад
Jacob Curley - Im thinking if you want to use the threads cut by the tap it will have to be a bigger bolt, and it might be too thick to go through the rocker arm, in this case.. By inserting the correct thread helicoil into the tapped hole, you have the same conditions for the original bolt, before it got stripped out..

Sounds tight. It also sounds like one of those jobs where I would actually have to be there to see exactly what’s going on. So I cannot advise anything over the internet without seeing the whole situation. I greatly appreciate your and also thanks for watching.

2014 chev cruise and someone stripped out a valve cover bolt. M6 30 with E10 socket bolts. What would I drill and retap bolt hole with?, drill bit size and rethread size?

You can try this kit. It comes with everything you need including the drill bit amzn.to/3J0At4w

I ha e even gone out an bought a helicoil kit now. The tensioner bolt side mounted for cam belt lost its thread and I really wanted a solution without change the lower half of the engine, and now I have one. Bummer though, to get access to it I have to use a right angled drill attachment doing a 8mm 1.25 helicoil. So first ever helicoil going to be tougher than most I recon. Ha ha

It did work out perfectly first time. Real easy system with flawless results. I didn't have to use a bolt chart either, as i measured the bolt with a tape measure and then measured the thread gap same procedure and just went for it. 8 x 1.25. Thanks to you and this video I fixed a cam belt tensioner and saved the engine. Ha ha

Can you retread a hole that has already been rethreaded for a spark plug

Got a question not about a hole with stripped threads. I want to know if you can tap a hole with 12Mx1.25 to 12Mx1.75 with just a tap and no heli coil?
@darinclay6838
@darinclay6838 4 года назад
NO. You'll end up with a nice smooth hole with no threads. There may be enough steel bits from the "threads" left to screw the bolt in but it will strip immediately.
@thereviewer4173
@thereviewer4173 3 года назад
Why not go to 12 x 1.5 instead? You will probably need a drill bit to keep the threads from being too deep/long and breaking. I would think it can work if done correctly. Or you can also go to an even higher size and creating new threads with a totally different bigger size, assuming you have the space to do the work and fit the bolt.

I currently need to rethread a hole in my brake caliper mounting bracket for the guide pin bolt, would this be a possible solution, considering the bolt opening is open ended?
@hotapplepy
@hotapplepy 4 года назад
Caliper mounting bracket guide pin has no (male) thread. It just slides in and out. If you are taking about the hole on top of the guide pin which is used to hold the piston unit, then yes the guide pin does have (female) threads. However, why not change the guide pin itself? you will be changing both at a time! Easy and most imp, safe!

When you tap it.. Can you put a bigger gauge bolt in?.. Is the coil just so you can fit the exact same bolt?..
@handymanPF
@handymanPF 2 года назад
The coil insert is the new threads. If the application allows you to put in a bigger gauge bolt then I do not see why not. Just be careful. Most of the time you cannot go to a thicker gauge bolt .

So when you drill the damaged threads out. The actual size of the hole doesn’t increase? So that the original bolt will fit like a glove?
@handymanPF
@handymanPF 2 года назад
Majority of the time the hole is drilled slightly larger then the original size and then traced with the new threads. Because it would most likely be to tight if it was not drilled a little larger.
@ian8084

Do you necessarily need to drill a bigger hole and add a helicoil? Or can you just re tap the same hole
@handymanPF
@handymanPF 7 лет назад
+Ian Thompson you have to follow the directions on the kit. But usually you have to drill the hole bigger. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching and commenting. Please like, share, and subscribe.

I just did this and my bolt doesn't go down All the way the rocker arm still had some play🤦🏿‍♂️ so I tried getting out the thread but it doesn't want to come out so I tried Retaping it out in snapped the thing that wholes the rocker arms set in place then I tried drilling it out and that snapped the drill bit inside 🤦🏿‍♂️ can't win I did rocker arm all the time but this one time the bolt just had to be stripped 🤷🏿‍♂️🤦🏿‍♂️🙏🏾

I'm trying to fix my hole for my tension pulley bolt. How can I do that without removing the engine please help I got the tap and inserts and drill bit but I want to make sure I do it right without damaging the block.

+Fee Baby I don't know what your working on nor do I know what kind of room you have to work. So I can't really help you. But I can give you a tip. Some times the tip of the bolt gets boogered up and might only mess the first couple threads up in the bolt hole, so you might find out what the diameter and pitch of the bolt and chase the old threads as well as chasing the bolt threads or just get a new bolt. You might be able to do this especially if it's cast. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching and commenting. Please like, share, and subscribe.

Hi there, I got a couple of questions. 1) why do impact guns do no harm to wheel nuts but yet can strip the threads of bolt holes? Where I live, mechanics use impact guns to fasten wheel nuts all the time. 2) Can tightening subframe bolts with an impact gun instead of a torque wrench cause the chassis' treads to be stripped? (I suspect this was what happened to my car, the handling is a little off now. An amateur foreman might have overtightened something).
@jweiss03706

Andrew Chan funny you say that. My wheel hub and lug nut are stripped from impact gun. I need to do this to wheel hub so I don’t have to pay $1,000+ to replace the wheel hub. Exactly why I watched this video! Hope it works!

A few days ago I stripped transmission drain threads. I’m thinking to re-threads it but if I do that do i need a bigger bolt? I’m think the drain hole will be slightly bigger there for I need big bolt.
