How To Reverse In A Manual Car-Driving Lesson For Beginners

This is a video of me demonstrating how to reverse in a manual car. It is a driving lesson that is geared towards beginner drivers, and features two camera views (one of my face, and the other of the pedals). The key to reversing in a manual car is releasing the clutch slowly, and holding it at the biting point. If you simply release the clutch all the way, you will move the car backwards really quickly, which can be very dangerous.

I wish my driving instructor had taught me that. His instructions was to "remove" foot from the clutch. What he didn't tell was not to remove foot from the clutch completely. Tomorrow will be my next lesson and I'm pretty sure I will pass that test. Thank you for the thorough explanation. 🙏👍

I know this is an old video but I think it's worth mentioning that it's okay (and better for the car) to let the clutch out all the way if you're reversing over a longer distance. Example, my dad has about a 2-300 foot driveway that I frequently reverse from. Initially the speed is too much when you fully release but, if you have that much space, you have time to let the rpms come down a little without fear of killing the car. Gauge it for yourself but it wouldn't be ideal to keep the clutch pressed at the grabbing point for that long of a distance, it would put unnecessary wear on it. However, video is spot on for pulling out of the garage, parking lots, etc. Last thing you want to do is let that clutch out and fly out of a parking space.

thank you!!!! i thought i was doing it wrong by holding the clutch in the entire time. i knew if i completely let off it would be too fast, but i’ve also been told not to hold the clutch in too long to keep stress off of it

Thanks for this. I've owned 3 manual transmission cars in my life, with a 2018 Civic Si as the most recent. I've been really paranoid about my shifting as the car was a big (and very worthwhile) investment for me. I had been doing exactly as you outlined in this video with my past two standard cars, but was afraid this wasn't proper and that not fully releasing the clutch was causing undue harm to the transmission.

Everything I’ve seen on the internet tells me that “technically” it increases wear on the clutch but it can’t be helped. This is the correct method whether it increases wear or not. I mean think about it, what’s easier to replace? A 1,200 dollar clutch after 150k miles or a 30,000 dollar car?

+joe balou you'll do great, took me 15 to 20min and I drove to work in heavy rain. I found a empty parking lot and practiced 1st gear starts and reverse specifically. Just imagine that when you push your clutch pedal down to the floor you are pulling the trans and engine apart. When you are releasing (taking foot off pedal) you are meshing or putting the trans and engine back together. The clutch is just like your breaks; if you slam on your breaks your car will jerk really hard, if you gradually add pressure to your break you will smoothly slow down as far as principal.

cool man, I went a step further after my throw out bearing went and didn't have the funds to fix it last winter. I drove a year with no clutch. Syncros are fine and trans still good. I had to replace the flywheel due to very light stress cracks, the clutch disc was still good but I replaced it too.

Well Kertzy i'm sure you know what to do 2 yrs on. I just got my 1st manual today and i was nervous about the breaking part. But very easy. And no u wont hurt or stress the transmission shifting into nuetral to stop. Remember u are in *TOTAL CONTROL* of the manual over an automatic where u have little to no control. So u can stop various ways.

@alexnovember6602
@alexnovember6602 7 лет назад
Jacky Tran no, keeping foot on the clutch is only if you're going to reverse slowly
@danielbryan5689
@danielbryan5689 7 лет назад
Jacky Tran no just release the clutch more. Reverse is a high torque gear; in some cars reverse has even more torque than 1st gear! If you give it more throttle then you will launch the car in reverse. Like he said in the video, we want to reverse in a controlled manner. Plus, reverse isn't used as much as your forward gears so you won't put that much wear on the clutch.

Most important question - do we push the clutch in and put it in gear after the car has been turned on or after😭
@Lastyearsjacket
@Lastyearsjacket 2 года назад
You can start the car in gear, won't hurt anything. Just remember that it's in gear and keep the clutch pushed to the floor until you're ready to move. However, for safety sake, it is probably better to get in the habit of starting the car in neutral, put foot on brake, disengage ebrake, put car in gear (whichever way you're headed) and rock n roll. Can get more creative as you gain more experience but I always encourage starting with the basics. If you forget it's in gear, start it and let the clutch out it might lurch into someone else's vehicle and that would suck.
@JaycRam
@JaycRam 5 месяцев назад
Wouldn't this method be considered "riding the clutch", and effectively wear it out faster? I usually just give the car some gas, release the clutch all the way, and then once the car is in motion use the brake to control the speed.
