I appreciate that you put a healthy dose of your own style and personality into your videos. I found your channel because I wanted to see some video of an obscure SNES RPG but I kept watching because I liked your style. Thanks for showing us a look behind the scenes of your process.

Damn, that whole "struggling with your inherent laziness" bit hit home. Truth be told, I doubt I'll get to apply a lot of the tips you gave for anything I do, but it sounds like good advice to follow on the off chance I decide to start a channel. Definitely a fascinating watch though, the part about color-coding stuff when planning and writing sounds legitimately great, I'm sure the aspiring youtubers in your audience could learn a thing or two from this vid.

As someone who's never watched a single video like this I LOVED it. Really cool to see how you go about this stuff! There's a lot I can learn and adapt in my own process from watching this though for the most part its not that different. Some thoughts- -Heck yeah, taking notes completely improved the quality of my talking points too and I use my phone as well! -Thanks for the tip about Switch clips, I'll be keeping that in mind in the future. -Room looks like a super cozy gaming hangout -Nice to see you callout the large amount of gaming youtubers who just explain their playthrough to you. Drives me nuts. Over half of those videos is just them EXPLAINING the story or what's happening and, for me, its so much wasted time and breath. Not surprised so many follow that formula though as it normally leads to a huge runtime and a lot of people just want to hear someone ramble about a game they like no matter what they're saying about it. -I appreciate you appearing on camera because it allows for a more natural feeling discussion which makes it easier to engage with. -I appreciate that you aim to complete the games you cover, that kind of thing is important to me because I like hearing thoughts from someone who saw the game all the way through. -I totally get the "footage gathering to fill the gaps" bit. Some things are very difficult to track down in hours and hours of footage so its often easier to "make the footage". Games like Pokémon or Pikmin with tons of on the spot surprises can be a pain to track down after the fact but I've gotten in the habit of writing down timestamps and moments where something specific I'll likely want to show in the video happened. -The Bedwars got me 🤣 This was awesome! Keep it up, you're crushing it ✌

The main reason I watch your channel is because you play through the whole game AND talk about it. Not very many people are doing that in retro gaming. With rpgs most videos show the first level and talk about the whole game. With side scrolling platformers most videos just show game play footage of them beating the game with no commentary. It's kinda odd when compared to other art forms. People reviewing movies don't just watch the first half of the movie and review it. People reviewing music don't just play the album and say nothing.

I know you get this a lot but your channel is seriously underrated. You put a lot of effort into your content and it shows. Just discovered you via algorithm and it’s sucked me back into a retro rpg wormhole.

I discovered your vids a few months ago and have since watched all your SNES RPG reviews. I am surprised you are not bigger, I think your vid format is excellent, the off the cuff style is refreshing, and your personality is great. Thanks for keeping up for 8 years, your content is excellent, and I also loved the AVGN making of ep, and yours has been a great watch. Thanks man!

Dude, this was a great watch. I always find it fascinating on how other creators do what they do. Notes are so important. My notes have basically involved into writing micro rants as I play. I always have notepad open and as soon as something irritates or intrigues me, I just write out that section of the video then and there. I have a "topic skeleton" I have that I use for the basis of videos and I fill it out as I go. Also, I agree with you on those creators who simply narrate their playthrough. It's so prominent, it's hard to get away from. I have even tried it once or twice despite hating it because that's what people like. I'd much rather hear a quick blurb on the story than WELL THERE WAS A VILLAGE AND THIS IS MARVIN HE IS A SWORDSMAN HERE HE IS FIGHTING A GOBLIN AND NOW THE GOBLIN ATTACKS AND NOW MARVIN ATTACKS OKAY I WON AND I GET FIVE GOLD AND FIFTEEN EXP OKAY SO NOW I AM WALKING NORTH..........

I've watched this video several times now, and thanks to you, Mister Jason, I actually did complete a game I had never played before! I didn't like said game, but I finished it, made my own review for it, and I've been hooked on reviewing games ever since, even though I've only made two as of this comment's writing. Thanks, Mister Jason! You've actually given me a reason to play through all of my gaming backlog!

Discovered your channel a couple days ago with your older vids, which didn't make the best first impression, but I stuck around and can say that you improved tenfold with your pacing and writing. I think the part of me that's the most excited about this series is for you to reach the more obscure late Super Famicom RPGs that barely anyone has heard of, like Dark Law: Meaning of Death or Treasure Hunter G. I love obscure games like those, they are usually ambitious but jank or fun but short and sweet. Hell, I can't wait for you to cover more strategy RPGs such as the four Super Robot Wars games on the console eventually.

This very fascinating. I get what you mean when you say how you enjoy other people videos that cover their work flows it's all very interesting. I've not really produced any content at all, but that does not mean that I am not interesting in eventually making something. Anyways I feel like after following your channel for about a year after finding one of your SNES reviews that I have seen how your content has evolved and how your videos have improved. So even if in terms of analytics the higher quality has not lead to any direct channel growth, the higher quality is still being notice and appreciated.

Thanks for the Elgato advice. I used that 4K capture utility, because clearly the software custom made for this device would be better than any alternative... But no, you were right. OBS clears it easily. It's more stable, more customizable, as you said, and even has less of an input delay.

I'm preparing to do a smattering of video essays on my channel soon, I gotta keep all this in mind. Already have all the scripts written and stuff. It's funny, I OBSESS about the scripts more than anything haha. Between Jason and Rebecca Tripp, a similar youtuber I follow who used to just "cover" game soundtracks but who now also does video essays, there are very few who are as genuine. Oh yeah, Davidvinc is good too. Rebecca has a video essay on Chrono Trigger that is every bit as good as Jason's video essay on Chrono Cross.
@maxstone9999
@maxstone9999 Год назад
You are a genius... when recording your script, leave a decent pause, then say what you want video edited in then decent pause then resume script. Then you know exactly what and where to add in your visual edits. The pauses on either end serve as a great indicator of when to cut.

I like this type of video. Usually though, when the mega-creators do it, this type of vid is also one of the few windows into the 'real person behind the character' but you're still mostly real aside from the occasional cutaway skit. 🤣 So much work goes into these vids. I could never do vids on long games like this--WAY too much footage. Actually I don't even have the time to even play them, and have started turning to youtubers to tackle/summarize my backlog of 'genres I don't often play' for me. Anyway, youtube's really been pumping your vids at me for the last week and I finally took the bait. 👍 That algorithm knows me pretty well...

The most recent RPG I beat was Hero Senki: Project Olympus for the Super Famicom, as it got a finished fan translation a couple months ago. I think it's prime material for this series as well, given it has many baffling design decisions in its battle system and high encounter rate. It's a neat but fairly limited early SFC RPG with a lot of charm, and some of the most brutal boss battles I've seen.

Playthrough essays are a slippery slope. I think the base of those kinds of videos have a strong foundation for someone to build on. Easy to pin point a beginning, middle and end, so the pace of the video is a bit more in your favor. Especially if it's an RPG. that combined with the runtime is probably why they do so well. But if all you built on that foundation was just a playthrough, all you gave them was a wiki article voice over. Often times you don't even have a clear conclusion on if they liked the game or not when you watch some. Doesn't feel like you took anything satisfying from the video. My videos fall under this format and it's a tricky tight rope. I tend to avoid falling over to the just a playthrough pit by treating them like a science project while writing a theme or story with the video. It takes a lot longer to make them like that but I think the end result is always worth it. The section about how you take notes is top tier advice and Is extremely useful for someone coming up! I want to try out the method with coloring different things myself for the writing stages

Just some feedback about your thoughts about being on camera with your live action parts… saying you’re not sure if it adds anything to your videos… I find it interesting to see the stuff in your background and the spaces you live in. It is curious to see your living space and get a glimpse into your real life. I’d suggest to keep the live action parts. It’s jank, raw, and interesting.

I could never stick with a first draft. Even if barely anything changes from the first to the final, I always have to comb through my writing a few times to make sure I'm not repeating the same word three times in a paragraph or I have to make sure sentences flow well when I say them out loud. I'm also surprised how quickly you got through audio editing. That's always a slogfest I never have the motivation to get through.

Love your stuff dude - in my opinion, you shouldn't let other similar videos out there in the wild deter you from making something you want to make. You have your own style and a unique approach - as long as there is passion behind what you are doing it will contribute something new and be entertaining.

Looks like a lot of your viewers really got something out of this! Including myself. You went deep man and I feel you on the whole lazyness thing. It's a constant battle. And being old as fuck and exhausted from work all the time makes doing a proper job creating videos pretty much impossible for me. I have almost zero time between responsibilities and family life. The only reason I even keep trying is because I enjoy it and I am stubborn as hell. I really enjoy these types of videos. And you did a great job. Def will be using that clap technique to find the spikes in the audio for future videos. Pretty smart! Will be rewatching this again as I got interrupted halfway through as usual. You make great content bro, and I'm proud of ya!
