This video checks in on Matilda, a fiddleleaf fig revived/rescued nearly two months before. The plant is doing well and has put on new growth, which is an indication that she will survive and thrive. See how well Matilda, the fiddle leaf fig plant, is doing, including her two new leaves. She has been getting bright light from a window and supplemental lighting. She is watered when she is approaching dryness. The video also explains why you want to keep damaged leaves on the plant when you are reviving a houseplant.

Thank you so much for the update! Other channels tend to leave us hanging .. no updates on how previously featured plants are doing. I just repotted mine, it was a Costco purchase, a beautiful full fiddle. But it lost 4 leaves, I know 2-3 is normal as its adjusting to its new home. But the 1st 2 that fell were from the middle part of the plant then the remaining 2 were the oldest leaves, hope that makes sense. But i noticed from the very beginning that half the soil would dry out & other half was always reading "wet" on the moisture meter. Some leaves are starting to show root rot symptoms so i finally repotted today & well, fingers crossed that I did it right cos its the 1st time i repot something so big

Thank you for sharing. I transplanted my Ficus Audrey, removed all the dirt off the roots, thought it was root rot, but I had it too close to the heating vent. It dropped 75% of its leaves, but after a few weeks I saw new roots and new leaves opened up on several branches. Glad Matilda is doing well.

Ya Bratcher, Thanks for watching, and so glad to hear about Audrey. That's great she has new leaves. It's really good that it wasn't root rot and was just a matter of moving her away from the heating vent.

This gives me hope! I just transplanted my fig to a smaller pot because it was it a pot way to big. Although I feel the new pot should be smaller I will wait it out to see how my fig does. Thanks so much!!!

So...if you bought one in a 10" pot would you move it down to an 8 inch?
@HealthyHouseplants
@HealthyHouseplants 3 года назад
Mair Waugus, You would want to move it down if it appears to be too small for the pot. You want one-third pot to two-thirds plant on top, so that could be from a 10 inch to an 8 inch, but you'll need to look at the plant to know for sure. Additionally, inside the pot you want 2/3 roots to 1/3 remaining pot for soil. Here are a couple videos that explain these two concepts in more detail, too: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NXy8W8rz-Ec.html and ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ohY6hnSn7Nc.html

I recently bought this plant and was having red dots? Under the leafs so i checked it just had very little roots... so i think that was the main problem on my fiddle leaf. Should i put my fiddle leaf in smaller pot?
@HealthyHouseplants
@HealthyHouseplants 3 года назад
s k, Do the red dots move around, or are they stationary? Moving around would be a pest and stationary would be a disease or just the plant's response to not doing well. Yes, if the plant has very little roots, repot into a smaller pot for sure! It will likely be a much smaller pot than it is in currently. Here is another video that may help on the ratio between pot size and root mass: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ohY6hnSn7Nc.html

Your video was very helpful. I am very new to this and have had my fiddle leaf for a year. I recently noticed the roots were coming out of the soil on top and the leaves were either getting hikes in them or browning at the tips so I repotted. I noticed fungus gnats a week later. Repotted again and realized the gnats were in the soil bag. I took off all the soil, left her bare and went out to buy more soil. Came back an hour later and repotted her. Now all the leaves have drooped down or changed color. some went light green, others have dark green spots and others have brown spots. The one leaf that was about to bloom has stopped and I can see a brown spot on it. Unfortunately there's a lot more I did to get rid of the gnats before repotting, like spraying it with soap water and putting it in direct sunlight. And I also took off too many leaves I feel. About 4. I really don't want to lose it. It's been exactly one week since all of this change to her. One good sign is the top two leaves are doing well. Any tips? Thanks in advance.

Nadia Akhtar, Thanks for watching. Well, the plant has been through quite a bit of trauma. I would recommend just leaving her alone and waiting to see what happens. Hopefully you didn't plant her in too big of a pot, as that will lead to root rot. You want 2/3 plant to 1/3 pot. So more plant than pot. Otherwise, there is too much wet soil. So, if she is in the correct size pot, just give it some time to see if she pulls through. If she's in too big of a pot, she needs to go in a smaller one. More trauma in terms of repotting, but it's necessary. Let me know.

Thank you for this information. How much would you water a plant as such at this point?
@HealthyHouseplants
@HealthyHouseplants 4 года назад
Josephine Segovia, Thanks for watching, and you're welcome. When the plant is ready for watering, you want to soak the soil well until the water comes out the bottom of the drainage hole. Then wait to water until the plant needs water again.

Hi! I have a fiddle that I thought has root rot. I repotted a couple of months ago. It started sprouting a branch and new leaves but some leaves are still getting black spots. And the soil stays wet in one spot. Should I try repotting again and make sure to remove all of the old soil? Idk what to do! I don’t want the new leaves to have issues.
@HealthyHouseplants
@HealthyHouseplants 3 года назад
YepitsAmy, It would probably be a good idea to repot in fresh soil. It sounds like you could have fungal spores still in the soil. How's the plant doing now?

I had about three leaves turning black on my fiddle. Amanda is over 6 feet tall, I've had her for a year now. First sight of a black leaf I repotted in the same pot but with fresh soil. I didn't see any black mushy roots or smelled anything bad. It is winter time where I live and I had to take immediate action. I was told not to tepot your plant in the winter time. Do you think Amanda is gonna be alright?
@HealthyHouseplants
@HealthyHouseplants 3 года назад
Amanda Marshal, Amanda will likely be alright, especially since you didn't pot her up into a bigger sized pot, but just gave her fresh soil in the same amount she was growing. It's not ideal to pot up in the winter months, but it's usually okay. Just make sure to keep her watered correctly. Don't let her dry out, but don't keep her soggy, and provide bright light. Let me know how she's doing!

I bought this plant a month ago. The roots were poking out on top of the soil. I read that was indication it was outgrowing the pot. After watching your part 1 video I'm afraid I repotted it in a pot too big for the plant. I bought the plant in a 8 1/2 inch pot. Repotted in a little over 12 1/2inch pot about 2 weeks ago. Should I repot to a smaller pot?
@HealthyHouseplants
@HealthyHouseplants 4 года назад
Karina Alvarez, I would repot to a smaller pot if you don't have the 2/3 plant to 1/3 pot ratio, which it sounds like you no longer have. It's okay to pot up when you see roots coming out of the top of the soil, but only into a pot where you maintain the 2/3 plant to 1/3 pot ratio. And when you do pot up, it should generally only be one pot size up; max two. So from an 8 1/2 inch to a 9 1/2 or so; max 10. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have more questions!

i have a question, what to do if she doesn't grow new leaves?
@HealthyHouseplants
@HealthyHouseplants 4 года назад
thomasshanandry, It depends on how long it's been. It can take 2-3 months for new growth, depending on the condition of the plant when you started the revival. If you don't get new growth after 4 months, it could be that the plant is being overwatered and/or has root rot, or it isn't getting sufficient light or is in need of nutrients. Let me know if you have more questions or wish to let me know how long it's been for your plant.

How much water do you put?
@HealthyHouseplants
@HealthyHouseplants 4 года назад
Maria Bennett, I believe you are asking how much water when watering the plant? When it is time to water, I will soak the soil well until water starts running out of the drainage hole on the bottom of the pot. Then I'll wait until the plant is approaching dryness to water again. You might want to watch my video on how much to water houseplants: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WGykgTDrlSk.html

Hi! I bought a ficus fiddle leaf fig last Thursday and i think i maybe put it a lot of water cause suddenly all the leaves turned brown and crispy. I repot it 2 days later after i got it and changed all of her soil... i thought maybe it was root rot so today i got her out of the put to check and the soil was almost dry and no signs of root rot.. i dont know what im doing wrong, the leafes just turned brown and started to fall, im so sad. I hope u can help me:(
@HealthyHouseplants
@HealthyHouseplants 3 года назад
DM design, Since this is a new plant for you, it could be that your plant does have root rot, but it isn't showing in the roots right now because the grower sprayed the plant with a root rot inhibitor, which will cause a plant to not show signs for awhile. When you watered, you started the root rot cycle again. That being said, it isn't anything you did. Did you water her when you saw that the soil was almost dry? How did she respond?
@daniellamontero9506

@@HealthyHouseplants Thank you very much for your answer! Yes, I watered it on Monday taking advantage of the fact that the ground was completely dry, but the leaves continued to fall and only the trunk remained ... however, it is firm and I did the test of scratching it and the inside is still green, So i guess is not dead yet.. I dont know what happens next or what should I do.. I have looked in many pages and some say that it is better to leave it alone and continue watering it every week, and other pages recommend cutting the upper part of the trunk and planting it again in a pot with different soil. I don't know which is better😣
