I made two topiaries 42 years ago when I was a teenager and they are still alive. They are small leaved privet. They are older than my children and still going strong.
You might spray it with hairspray. And if it is to dusty, hairdryer on cool will help you to get rid of the dirt. If colour fades perhapa colourspray, or spray Gold or Silver colour over it, glitter maybe? Give it a touch of christmas. As long as it holds the foliage, you can use it. It is even dry, Brown and dusty better then a fake one. Good idea.
I'm glad I stumbled across your video because it's making me feel better! lol I have 1 potted topiary lemon cypress that lived (operative word) indoors, and 1 potted conical-shaped that lives outdoors under a covered porch. The outdoor cypress is very happy - all soft and bright green and, well, happy! I let the indoor one dry out it seems just ONE time and, as you say in your video, ever since then it has just been on a slow, slow death spiral. haha. I moved it outdoors next to its friend but it just refuses to perk up. We had a good long run, Topiary Cypress, and I'm sad to see you go, but I'm actually glad to learn my life-saving efforts are in vain and I can stop the bedside...er, the plantside...vigil as you won't be recovering. Thanks for the information, Linda! [Confession: I may buy another topiary variety if I see one in my daily travels because they're quite nice, and I pinky swear I'll never let it dry out!]
I haven't created my own topiary. Would like to get one however since finding you. I love the look of, and since I cut hair anyway, it's the perfect idea! :)
Love my Joyce Cheb scissors. Bought my first pair at Kiss The Chef in Lewisville, TX 35 years ago. Then bought a pair for gardening. They last forever and take care of multiple needs. Glad to see you recommending them.
I created my first boxwood topiary last weekend, today I'm attempting my second. you have me hooked. I don't know why I have put this off. I've tried everything else, why not this, haha! keep up the good work. ps... love your front and back yard.
You sound like me I don't like discarding things but like to find other uses for it if I can. It looks lovely and can still bring you joy. Such a good idea. 🙂
When I read revive I thought it meant revived. I bought some .25 cent cypress from the grocery store. One is prickly, crunchy and looks like it's been painted, but the other looks fine. I was hoping I could recover the bad one, but I guess there's no hope for it. 🥺
I came here for the very reason I found one that was decorated to be a "Whoo-ville tree" I felt so sorry for the poor thing I wanted to save it but I am finding no hope.
have you done a show on keeping your hedgers and clippers sharp? even some of mine rusted but they weren't great anyway. I treasure my tools but sometimes they just have to go. I would like to learn how to keep them sharp. thank you
I've always loved topiaries but never attempted to make one. Definitely going to give it a try! So... I assume since it's already dead/dying you don't give it water??
I have the same dead one that I have preserved. But it is getting really fry. I sprayed it with a sealer and I want to try to spray with grass dye to keep it green.
I have a very small darker green cypress that I bought at Christmas and despite misting and watering it, I do think it has died. It feels crunchy. But I think I will keep it preserved like you are doing. I may even put it in a different pot. My only question is will it turn brown and lose its color?
Mine did (turn brown). I just bought two replacements today and came to RU-vid to learn to care for them better. Not too optimistic since even this wonderful green thumb lady basically lost one.
Sorry. Im new to this. I got a potted lemon cypress (grump tree) in November, it was doing well. Now it is browning. I tried trimming off the brown. It is browning still. Its actually still in the little plastic pot it originally came in (im sure thats not good.) Is there any saving it? What should I do? Thanks so much and thanks for the informational video.
If it feels dry and crispy all over, then it is probably toast. If you are keeping it very very well watered, and there is still some green inflexibility to the branches, then cut off the dead and give it lots and lots of humidity and water :-)
I have a topiary and the branches just have few leaves. It looks like it's getting new leaves but lots of bare branches. How can I get it to fill up???
