How to Rewire your Custom Car is a step by step guide on how I wire a project that has absolutely wire harness existing in the vehicle. I would say that this is starting from scratch, but it is actually at itch (what comes before the scratch)
Using a Painless Wiring 21 circuit wiring harness, along with a Switch Pros solid state controller I add all the required circuits along with heat and AC to a the classic Willys Wagon.
Make sure you Subscribe and turn on notifications to stay up to date with this build and the new ones I have coming up in the future.

I love wiring projects. I spent New Years 2010 at the TA Truckstop in Dallas, TX rewiring my tractor/trailer from the back of the sleeper to the taillights of my trailer. I've gone on to do other large projects since, but that one was special.

If you're weird, then I am too. I rewired my whole 71 truck from nocte to tip with no real previous experience. I watched your shows since I was a kid among the others on Power Nation. I was so surprised at how older vehicles were so simple. All the wires were neatly tucked and hidden for the most past and it was so easy once I started. My philosophy is: you might as well start somewhere. With that mentality you just grab something, work it to completion, then move on. Before you know it, it's almost done and your bewildered by the progress you've made.

It IS easy! Key is to study and learn HOW it all works together, then it's just connecting it together. It gets hard / impossible when you tell yourself it is! There is endless references to read and watch to learn how, stop telling yourself you can't.

Moneys in the detail with wiring install, did a 18 ckt painless into my 49 willys wagon, it's all in there, tucked up under dash, fuseblock on custom bracket near e brake handle, 5 piece guage kit, aux switch pannel in glove box, unused ckts coiled up in kick pannels, I used Mag Daddy clips thru out, very clean install. All of my stuff worked first time. I went overboard with the ground ckt, heads wired together, then to block, block to frame, frame to body and neg bat to starter mount. Running pro flo fuel injection, error on safe side with grounds when doing FI.

Love this build, I am doing a similar 53 pickup with the R2.8. I am an automotive electrical engineer and I stay very far away from weatherpack connections. They are terrible connection points and hardly ever seal properly and when you have vibration they get worse. I prefer using Deutsch who was bought out by TE Connectivity. Very available and it is the connector bulkhead to the firewall supplied by Cummins. Little more expensive but way better connection and reliability for years to come.
@BigTireGarage
@BigTireGarage 3 года назад
Appreciate the feedback, but these are only connections for the reverse lights, rock lights, and ARB compressor all items that will not cause me any issues when driving if they fail. I have used these exact connections on many rigs with no failures to date so fingers crossed that continues.

In a DC circuit current flows from the negative terminal through the car through the load and back to the positive terminal.
@BigTireGarage
@BigTireGarage 3 года назад
Yes you are correct that "technically" the electron flow is from negative to positive, but when dealing with 12 volt automotive electronics we always refer to flow of current from the positive to the negative. It is similar to how we refer to "heat transfer" as the AC cooling the inside of the car and not the actual thermal dynamic flow of heat transferring to the cold evaporator.
@wheelieking71

You are not alone. I'm weird as well (enjoy wiring). The secret is: don't lie to yourself about how long it will take. Make a very generous guess, then at least double it! While it is very relaxing. It is also very time consuming. It looks so simple, right? Wrong. A proper, high quality wiring job takes A LOT of time.

I called the Painful customer service and the talking head said it was all my fault. He said they sourced their wire from American distributors, but the supplier may have been getting their stock from China. So, I am left with a wired car that has an intermittent system.
