I've just been hunting around for an explanation without all the waffling you get from a lot of horse people, and this is exactly what I'm after. Thank you.

@@KirstinKellyEquestrian I'm a slow and steady wins the race kinda person (I have fibromyalgia so it's by necessity), but if you're talking, make the point succinctly. There are too many wafflers in the horse world.

Wow thanks for explaining that so well! I've found the half halt quite hard to understand and apply, so I looked it up on youtube. This is the first video I watched and it made everything much clearer. I previously hadn't understood the core's role in it. Can't wait to try it myself!

Thank You so much for this video, perfect explanation of the half halt, will be trying this with my horse later on today. I have a big 17.2 that can be really heavy, almost feel like i’m holding his head up. I think i just end up slowing him up instead of collecting him. (As youve shown in your video).

This is probably a stupid question but are you doing the pulse with both hands or just the inside?
@KirstinKellyEquestrian
@KirstinKellyEquestrian 6 лет назад
There’s never a stupid question, I use both hands but you could try both and see what suits you and the horse best. The more you use your core muscles first , the less you use the hand though

Thank you so much! But how to zip up my stomach/core? I can't do that, I can only "vacuum" my stomach to make it look more flat :( please help
@KirstinKellyEquestrian
@KirstinKellyEquestrian 3 года назад
It’s a funny thing to explain but if you put your fingers on your oblique’s or the side of your stomach . It should feel soft , try tensing those muscles until they feel hard under your fingers . It’s definitely not sucking them in flat ( more like bareing down inside
@kidstrains1061
@kidstrains1061 Год назад
Hello please can anyone reply to me 😊. We do half halt with both reins ? Or only outside rein. Thank you
@KirstinKellyEquestrian
@KirstinKellyEquestrian Год назад
Hiya, I use the bracing or tightening of the oblique muscles in your stomach, that is normally enough . If you need to add the rein in after that , I normally use the outside rein . With every horse being an individual, if the horse hangs one one rein constantly I would then use both reins in trot to keep him even and straight
@korimiller1596
@korimiller1596 3 года назад
I’ve been riding for almost 4 months now, my trainer has told me many times to half halt but I’ve never been told how to do it. So basically your trying to get the horse to get in a better I guess posture? Or like pick themselves up? Sorry I’m a beginner and I don’t know much 😅
@KirstinKellyEquestrian
@KirstinKellyEquestrian 3 года назад
Yes it’s like teaching your horse to breathe up into his shoulders and sit for a second onto his back legs so he can move into better self carriage or another movement . Once you get used to riding half halts ( brace your obliques - side of your stomach, and belly button up) you’ll be able to ride downward transitions without pulling on the reins 😁

Pulse pulse in or outside rein or both same time or ?

I hand halt my girl with both hands and use my core and seat but she’s so hard on my hand she won’t respond. Help??
@KirstinKellyEquestrian
@KirstinKellyEquestrian 5 лет назад
Brianna Casbolt I would try just using your outside hand and try squeeze squeeze ( quite short then release) also if she is hard and doesn’t get it at first . Start by slowing her down at walk then relaxing your core and elbows to increase the length of walk again then brace the core and pulse pulse in the rein again . Better to do several little half halts then longer squeezes
