PART TWELVE: Parking Your Scooter (The Basics) PART A
In this video, Luke explains the skills, techniques and knowledge beginners need to park their motorcycles safely and securely.
Response to “@christinelbeattie - Can you pls do a video on parking Vespas? Specifically perpendicular to the street with the back wheel touching the curb, which is how bikes have to be parked in the US on streets.”
Sure, here are some tips for parking a motorcycle:
~ Park with other bikes
~ Consider your exit because you want an easy and safe exit
~ Should the rear wheel makes contact with the kerb... or not?
~ Should I park my motorcycle with the kick-stand, side stand or centre stand?
~ Should I lock the steering or not?
~ Consider the sun, rain, wind, dust & elements
~ Where should I put my helmet when parking my scooter?
~ Park your bike in a space to prevent damage
~ Consider others when parking your motorcycle
~ Find level and firm ground when parking your wheels and kickstand
~ Read and obey signs & road rules
~ Park your motorcycle so it can be seen / visibility is important
~ Park your scooter with the rear wheel close to the kerb and walk the bike into the spot
~ Turn off the Vespa engine when walking your scooter into the parking position
~ Is it better to parallel park or to park at an angle from the kerb
~ Find yourself a routine once you have your bike in the right position (lock helmet and gloves away safely then take your key)

Hi Luke, I wanted to drop you a line (long overdue) and say thank you very much for all of these scooter videos! About 9 months ago, I bought a Vespa (I live in BKK) and I had zero experience riding a motorbike, let alone driving on the other side of the road, or in Bangkok traffic. Anyway, I found an abandoned road near the Airport Rail Link Makkasan Station and practiced daily going step by step with each video that you produced last year. It was a game changer. Previously, I took a 3 hour lesson and it wasn't too helpful. Basically, I just followed someone around on a scooter without any instruction. Not sure if you offer group or private lessons, but if you do I'd be interested in learning more about what to do if you are going to crash, riding in the rain, or driving at night. Again, thanks a lot for the videos, they are extremely helpful! Cheers mate

Thanks for sharing and I am pleased these videos are helpful. As you know there are way too many accidents on the roads - so this is a primary motivation for me making these videos - to help people be safe and avoid accdients. Rain and night riding - good topics! I'll add them to my lest of future videos. Offering Lessons - right now no... but if I do in the future I will let you know.

Luke -- I've been riding off and on -- scooters and motorcycles -- for some 54 years. That was one of the best sets of video tips I've yet seen. I had never thought about turning the engine off when walking my Vespas back (or my motorcycles, either, for that matter), but it makes great good sense. Thanks for that one! As for the kickstand, I NEVER used it on either of my Vespas (can't quite remember if either of 'em had kicks, but...). From day one, I used the center stand on those scoots to great effect. (I did use the kick for my most recent motorcycle, an 850-pound '05 Kawasaki Vulcan 2000...a tad large for me to pop up on the center stand!). Seems to me that, on Vespas, if the kickstand is not REALLY tight against the frame when you kick it UP, the bike will not start. I have read/seen where this can be a problem for new riders not knowing why their new, fairly expensive scooter will no longer crank. Just a thought...now, on to PART B!

Thanks for sharing! You have a wealth of experience and I like how you pointed out the need for the kick stand to be 100% up for the engine to start. I think every beginner has had those moments thinking "why won't this damn thing start!?!?!".

Glad to see your videos pop up on my feed. Your training videos contributed significantly to my learning to ride my Vespa. Been riding since May of this year a 2023 GTS SuperTech. Been a real thrill. lol Thanks again for what you do.

This is an excellent tutorial video. Such useful tips that people tend to overlook! I loved it. I am a beginner and just about to leave for my first short scooter ride. Thank you so much, Luke! I appreciate it. ✨

Warm Up? Back in the good old days... yes. But with new and improved technology there is no need.
