I'm 65. Done a 200k ride every month since last September, planning a 250k soon. My top tip - DON'T PUSH THE PACE TOO HARD, drink so you need to stop frequently for a wee, and eat, eat, eat.

Also, keep in mind that "long ride" is all relative to your fitness level. Don't try to do a double century when 80 km is the longest you've ridden. I'm getting back in shape after a couple surgeries, one being heart surgery. My goals are modest, but I'm still pushing. 10 days after a carotid artery surgery I could barely do 2km....2 1/2 months later I finally broke 50 km...it's all relative.

I’ve done quite a few 100-mile rides. One thing I learned in the first few is to allow myself time to feel better. Sometimes I start off feeling rubbish and it can take 20 or 25 miles to feel closer to normal. And sometimes I feel bad after 50+ miles, especially if I’m behind on nutrition, it’s hot, or I’ve ridden a tough stretch. Those are the times to trust in your knowledge and the base miles you’ve done, and give yourself a chance to come back into form.

Great advice here. The only thing I would add is: Be realistic about your fitness. If you've been doing 1-2 hour rides all winter, you may not be ready for a hilly 9-hour suffer fest all at once. Build up to the really long rides before you commit to one.

For me the goal I set myself in April, when I started training more actively, was to be able to ride a local route that all road cyclists here do, at between 45 and 55 km length and between 400 and 550 meters of ascent, in an "acceptable" way. I've mostly reached that goal, as I did that route twice last week, on Sunday and then again on Tuesday, without major fatigue. I'm quite happy with that. Being a heavy rider at about 120 kg, and 56 years old, my uphill speed is slow, and the 45 km loop takes about 2.5 hours. I also have discovered that despite my weight I really enjoy climbing, and look forward to do lots more, balancing aerobic capability against muscle and joint strains, and slowly growing ever fitter, both according to Strava and my own observations of which gear up what hill etc. 🙂
@kleikev
@kleikev Год назад
This year, I did my first 100 km non-stop (also called the floor is lava) and did 920 km to Paris in four days. Both tours were above my previous limits and it was a pleasure to challenge these, but as most of the times, the hardest part was to get started, pack the bike and commit to start.
@francisbegbie5102
@francisbegbie5102 Год назад
Can i ask you where did you sleep in those nights? Was everything planned before?
@kleikev
@kleikev Год назад
@@francisbegbie5102 , I only planned the route itself and did not subdivide it. The plan was to cycle each day as long, as it feels good. So I had choosen wild camping. This resulted twice in a small forrest, at a forrest/park/something and one freshly mowed gras field. Sounds more awkward before, than while actually doing it. I always tried to find a secluded spot, but also always made it look like there is someone really only resting for a few hours, so no garbage outside, no loud noise (felt asleep very fast anyways), ... I supplied myself with spontanious visits at supermarkets and bakeries on the way, which turned out to be more difficult, than expected, since it was pentecost and I wrongly assumed, that in the Netherlands, Belgium and France the stores will all be opened. But there is always a petrol station, imbis, ... on the way. Refilling water at graveyards, sport grounds and camping places also works fine.

I just finished what I think is my 25th double-century. I've never gone beyond 400K and don't ever expect to. The biggest two factors for me have proven to be riding my own pace and staying ahead of my hydration and nutrition demand. I would add chamois cream to the list of must-haves. I don't obsess over any aspect, other than making sure that I work progressively up to at least 75% of the target distance in prep rides. (I would call them 'training rides,' but I don't really train.) One thing that works for me is to judge my condition based on how I felt at that point in previous rides. Within the same season, it is encouraging to note how your condition is improving, while in subsequent seasons, recognizing how you feel at, say, 130 miles compared to previous seasons' rides can inform whether you should take it easier or not.

My tips ... When you hit the inevitable low point... (you know where you just want to pack it in and go home). Just stop for 10 or 15 minutes drink some water eat a bar and then get back on and start riding even if its slower than your pace. In a while you will feel better. It also helps to break down the ride a bit when feeling down set a target 10 k down the road then reassess and set another achievable target. Before you know it you are close to end. Having done PBP '99 and many Brevets and Ultra rides these tips worked for me.

Unless you're commuting by bike, preparing for an event that you really want to do, or being paid to ride, don't let getting on the bike feel like a task. When it's stops being fun, you're doing too much. Ease off to the point where it's fun again, or find ways to make it more fun, like grouping up with folks or giving yourself little mini-challenges along the way. When it's fun, you'll do it with joy. When it's not, you'll do it grudgingly or not at all.

In the cold, my greatest tip was told to me by a Canadian. Never set off warm, let your body acclimatise. If you go strait from a hot room to the bike then the very first time you do any real effort will make you sweat and then the thermal properties of your clothing are worse all day, even when the sweat dries the remaining salt makes your kit much less efficient. Not a killer on a 20km ride but can feel tragic on a 200km.

Few things I have learned is make sure you keep hydrated, cause I have done it where I have gotten dehydrated on a ride. And on a distance ride is trying to play catch up with your fluids doesn’t work. Another is don’t go out hard and fast and blow up half way, rather try to keep it steady .

Just last weekend I smashed my all time record (which was 212 km previously) and raised it to 312 km. There were some factors which helped: first it was a group ride where everyone had the route so we were able to change the lead every so often. Second we had tailwind all the way which leads me to the next point: we did a one-way ride from Berlin (Brandenburg Gate) to Hamburg (Berlin Gate) so no closed circuit where the wind could be tailwind outbound and headwind inbound. Lastly Hamburg is where I live so the further we rode the closer we got to home. It helped that on the last 100 km there were no real feasible alternatives to battling on. We could have hailed a taxi but good luck at midnight in rural Mecklenburg-Vorpommern/Lower Saxony getting a taxi which is able to transport a bike. That said, it wasn't so bad, I never had any issues with fatigue, only my feet hurt afterwards.

Definitely need to find my balance for eating and drinking on a ride. Did 40km (my longest ride so far) on Saturday in really hot weather on a hilly route on NCR 74, felt rubbish on the way out but after stopping for lunch and turning back went 10 minutes faster on the way home, probably helped by the ascents being more gentle in the opposite direction!

Myself and a buddy are trying for a 580km (360 miles) ride somewhere next month. Already did some 300+km (180+ miles) rides before and i am missing some tips. If you feel rubbish take a rest, stretch your legs and get out of your bike position, you feel way better after. And have some back-up ready if you really can't do anything anymore.

Another thing about further is …… everyone can. Because not everyone can go faster and faster on the bike they got. Not everyone can have the most wonderful bike on the market. But everyone can ride a bit further/farther and challenge themselves and feel achievement, no matter how further/farther they go.

Great Video! But i dont rly go with the point in rising your handlebar at 3:25. The huds and the handlebar should be leveld horizontally to keep your hands in a position that is ergonimic for your wrist. If you raise them your wrist is angled to top all times when using the huds and if you have an aero shaped handlebar in the "resting position" your wrist is angled too. I had some wrist problems from that for quite some time rising helps in getting a comfyer riding position but on long term its bad for your hands if you dont do it with a riser bar or spacers. Thanks for all the Content!

Far better to pack an overnight kit and ride till it’s dark sleep for a while and ride home. This is the way to try further/farther as it lets you really gather the “how far can I get” question. Add in tracking so your family know where you are on a app or something and your sorted. It’s what took me from 32km to 4000km to the north cape. I knew what I needed and I knew what I didn’t need. ( I also knew what comfort was boiled down to during sleep time ). Knowing what too light meant as well as we seem to fixate on microscopic weight kit that won’t keep you dry or warm.

Wow sounds like you've been smashing the distance! It's a great point but we think that the sleeping outside only really appeals to a small selection of cyclists. It might a jump to far for some 🤔 How about a overnight bag for a hotel or B&B?
@davidalderson7761
@davidalderson7761 Год назад
@@gcn maybe….. it became a disease to camp in hotels on ultra distance events. Before certain individuals wanted to just win at all costs it was I believe the done thing to camp out. It’s very safe and for most people makes it CHEAPER to achieve. Being sponsored to win an event doesn’t level the playing field. Longer Distance overall does equal up the boys and girls event a lot to make it unisex.

I notice that the GCN crew all seem to ride naked? Well, at least when it comes to hands. How about wearing gloves? They add comfort over longer distances, stop your hands getting ripped up if you fall, or slipping when you sweat. They even help prevent sunburn on the backs of your hands! Gloves are great. Fingerless or otherwise. Depending on the weather.

Some great tips tho my only problem is I don't have any friends to ride with as I own a gravel that I ride on the road and I have no intention of changing wheels or tyres just to join a club which is what they wanted me to do. Riding with friends is only feasible if you're all roadies or it is where I live in Northern Ireland anyway. That's why I ride on my own.

I only ride for pleasure and exercise and usually only 110 to 130 km. I used to forget to drink, when it is not too hot. I ride along for one or two hours without drinking and without sweating and suddenly I feel tired and not thirsty at all. Then it is usually two late and I have to recover at a lower speed the next half hour desperately trying to drink more than I want. And I tend to be too optimistic and happy and ride too fast when I start. Three hours later I am too tired to bother to ride at a decent speed. As I ride for pleasure on a nice road I stop at a restaurant to eat, and then I too often eat too much. After such a big meal I just want to lie in the shadow and have a nap. And even worse if I get a couple of cold beers. The alcohol takes away all my energy and all I want is my wife to take the car and get me. She is not very friendly if I ask her such favours 😢 Fortunately at least in Germany you now can get good non-alcoholic beers. I don't really like colas at sweet sodas. Usually I plan my tours so that I can take the train back some of the way if I run out of steam, and if that is not possible I prepare better following your advice 😂

The night before long events or races, we make pasta with clams. Light protein, easy to digest. Sauté your garlic in olive oil,use a bit of clam juice,, a bunch of parsley ( the whole bunch) and 2 small cans of minced clam. Add chicken stock a bit i(nstead of white wine). Simmer. S n P… just light easy meal. 30 minutes so can get rested. Top your cooked pasta. Serve with baguette. Perfection.

find out what your limits are before your big ride. i have a speed i can hold for 2 hours, but it drops 2 kph for hour 3, 2 more kph for another hour and then back to original speed. so i dont go out of the gate at top pace. i stop digesting if i go as hard as i can. i have to drink 1 L fluids per hour to replace 65% of my fluid loss. that's right. i track sweat each ride so that i can stay on top of my hydration. i found that 65% is the lowest amount i can replace and not dehydrate on 2.5+ hour rides. i start hydrating and loading carbs 2-3 days ahead of time. i have a 10 hour ride this saturday. wish me luck
