Hello my friends. I’m going to show you to ride off of ledges safely. We want to get comfortable consistently keeping that front wheel from dropping to ensure a smooth landing. The first thing we want to do is to find a small ledge to practice on. Ideally small enough that it won’t matter if you drop the front end. Now the first trick is to stay on the throttle long enough. We need to stay on the throttle until that rear wheel leaves the ledge other wise the front wheel could drop. You can hear that I come off the throttle just as the rear wheel leaves the ledge here. A common mistake is letting go of the throttle too soon. The next thing we want to think about is avoiding wheel spin. If we spin our wheel as we try to jump off the ledge, we will likely no be able to carry that front wheel and we will get the same result as letting go of the throttle too early. One thing we can do to keep traction on our take off is to compress our suspension right before we apply the throttle. Driving your weight straight down through the footpegs will get you a nice even compression. I like to be on the balls of my feet on the footpegs. This drives those knobbier into the ground and lessens our chance of spinning the wheel when we get on the throttle. This is especially helpful when you don’t have a lot of speed and momentum to rely on to carry your front end. If you need to hop off of something from very slow speeds or from a stand still, you really want to make sure you do it right. I hope these tips help! The best thing you can do is practice, practice, practice! The more repetition you get under your belt, the more consistent you’ll get with this and you’ll become more comfortable in the extreme terrain.
