How to Rig a Berkley Gulp Jerk Shad for Catching Snook, Redfish, and Trout

I actually started out not being a big fan of the Berkley Gulp baits. And it wasn't because I wasn't catching fish on them, I just wasn't using them because I found them too expensive for my budget.
But once I finally gave the Berkley Gulps a whirl, I was sold. And the cost was (and has been) completely worth it to me in terms of my bait:fish ratio.
Gulp Jerk Shad baits can be incredibly effective when rigged properly. However, they can be a complete waste if you don't rig them properly or maintain them.
Fortunately, the setbacks of Gulp Jerk Shads are easy to overcome. This video explains the rigging aspect and I'll include a link below to an article that covers the proper maintenance.
For rigging a Gulp jerk shad, the most important factor is allowing the bait to maintain a straight profile once hooked so it doesn't twist in the water... a twisting bait is bad for drawing strikes and it significantly increases the odds of getting a frustrating wind knot in your line while out on the water.

There is one little tweak to your commentary that I use to help my lures last longer. When I'm finished fishing, changing lures, etc., and do not want my Gulp to dry out and harden, I cut the hook or jig off my leader and put the entire rigged lure back into the bag and juice. That helps the lure last longer since it isn't being damaged by removing the hook or jig. Another excellent video BTW with excellent information.

Just make sure to not keep it in there for an extended period of time... I accidentally left a jig head in the container for a couple days and it already accumulated a lot of rust.

FYI, you can reconstitute these type of Gulp baits. You can either throw them back into the Gulp Juice or soak them in water. I usually do it for 3 days. At the end of those 3 days the bait will be back to its original form. The time it needs to soak will vary on how long it has been dried out for. DONT throw these away if they are dried out because they can be reused.

I wish Gulp would last longer. I'm new to using it and around the Chesapeake Bay the tail biters chew them up quickly. And I heard the formula changed so they're softer now than before. You can cut old dry Gulp off the hook with a knife but it's better to cut the lure and hook off and put them in the Gulp container if you want to use it again. The 5" jerk shads also work great on a jig head if there's not a lot of snags. Flounder seem to really like the action too.

I mostly fish fresh water. Can I use this bait in freshwater or perhaps they make this for Freshwater ? I love the rig .

I never have luck with these when I fish on the jetties, specially when theres someone besides me using live shrimp. I do all the jerking motions mentioned but the specks wont hit my line and after a few min the guy besides me catches the Trout. Is this the reality when you use artificials?

Make sure to factor in the target strike zone depth when selecting lures. This gulp jerk shad rig in particular is most effective for covering the shallows (under 2.5ft of depth)... and it's not very good at all for targeting deeper zones. Most jetties involve much deeper water than just 2.5 ft, so I'm not very surprised to see that it wasn't performing well assuming it was a typical jetty that has the most active strike zone in deeper water along the edge of the rocks near the bottom.

@@Saltstrong thanks for the info and it make sense now. I rigged this up on a popping cork since if I fished using this on the bottom, the line gets snagged and ill end up losing the lure. So if thats the case then does that mean i have to put a heavy jig head on it so that it can sink deeper? I really appreciate the response because i feel like theres a certain science behind artificials that I have not figured out yet

To answer a question that came up in the video; I'm not sure, but I suspect Berkley Gulp! soft plastics are made from a hydro-gel material. That's why they absorb scent so well, and also why they shrink to 1/3 their normal size and turn rock hard if left outside the package.

Yes, but not nearly as well. Since the hook is weighted would you still add a sinker to your rig.

No sinker is needed assuming you're targeting fish in the 1 to 3 ft of depth... can be fished deeper too if worked slowly.

Matthew Moreno Yes, but it's not quite as effective. The 5" Gulp shad baits seems to work best in the shallows with the 1/16th oz weight on a 3/0 hook in our testing of the two.
