This is the start of a How To Series on small stream fishing that is brought to you by JP Ross. On this episode is about rigging your small stream rod, from attaching the leader to the fly line with and without the welded loops to attaching backing to your reel. Remember this is our take on how we fish and is NOT the only way it can be done. As always thanks for your support and go check out JP Ross. Awesome guy who caters to us small stream fly fishers.

Good idea for the how to videos. No matter how much you fish you always pick up something from listening to others. I bow and arrow cast so often now I’ve started wearing buckskin instead of waders!

I see your point about a loop to loop on a small rod but here's how I solved it. 95% of the time I'm fishing with a 7' rod or 7.5' rod. I just basically keep my leader length shorter than the rod so there is always a few inches of fly line out beyond the tip. I hate the loop to loop getting hung up on the guides but hate even more a kinked leader butt. In order to maximize the leader length, I attach a small piece of dense foam to the very end of the rod with a rubber band to use as a hook keeper. Viola! 7' or 7.5 leader with no kinks, no loop to loop hang-ups on the guides. Looking forward to this series!

As always appreciate your interaction. While I yapped for 30 mins as it was, I would definitely consider going loopless for the shorter rods ( 6.5) or less and in situations where you are gonna be spending a majority of your time bow and arrow casting. If I have enough room to fish a 7 or 7.5 foot rod, I am gonna be doing a lot less bow and arrow casting and more roll casting or some type of modified over head cast. Something I didn’t consider sharing but will now in a future video is how we carry our rods to keep more line out of the eyes when walking or moving. Again appreciate you watching and sharing.

@@bluelineoutfitters3964 No, the worst is when you get an indicator and two flies on it and still try to work it out without taking the 30 seconds to cut off your tippet and tie it back on afterwards. Ha ha ... Related is the stupidity of trying to work out wind knots without cutting your flies off first. I mean, a davy knot takes less than 10 seconds to tie, test and cut. I have promised to myself I will always cut my flies off before trying to untangle my line - usually after catching a dink makes one last ditch effort once he's in hand. I sometimes think it's on purpose. I guess I'd be pretty pissed if someone stabbed me in the face. I've been enjoying your channel. I've been getting the small stream bug lately. I fish to get away from people. If the stream I'm fishing has a car at every pull-off I just let 'em have it and find a tributary to fish up.

I love fishing the blue lines. I use two rods, one is a 5ft 2wt TQR from cabelas, I've had many fun outings with it. The other is a little longer 6ft 3wt. From Temple Fork. Always a fun time. Blue lines fish better. No fishing today, bad weather. Enjoyed watching. 👍

Jim thanks for watching. I have had several clients fish that Cabela’s 5footer over the years. It gets the job done for sure. It was a rainy morning here but that rain makes the summer better for the wild ones so we won’t complain.

A few tips here that may help Blue Line Outfitters take their game to the next level. 1) It's easier to get the line and backing onto the reel if the the reel is mounted on the reel seat and the line is run through the stripping guide. I usually just use the butt section of the rod for this unless it doesn't have the stripping guide, if not then I add the 2nd rod section. 2) the amount of backing can be more accurately judged if you start by winding the front of the fly line onto the reel, then attach backing and wind until the level you want is reached and cut the backing there. Keep in mind that this is likely the tightest it will ever go on as the gentleman in the video stated. Then pull it all off, make the arbor knot with the backing and wind it all back on. 3) the video showed a nail knot to attach the backing to the line which is fine, I usually use an Albright knot, which doesn't require a tool and works just as well or better. 4) A needle knot is smoother than a nail knot and possibly the strongest knot for attaching the leader to the fly line. I coat this with 2 or 3 coats of pliobond cement to seal it and keep water from seeping up the core of the fly line. 5) the smoothest fly line to leader connection is to thread the leader into the fly line as if starting a needle knot and then use adhesive such as zap-a-gap cement on the tag end of the leader, then slide that down into the line to affix the leader and wipe of the excess. There's no knot or seam to catch on anything. I've never had an adhesive bond fail with this method using zap-a-gap cement. I don't think I'd try it on heavy saltwater fish but for normal trout and bass freshwater fishing it's more than adequate. 6) When attaching a leader to the fly line, try to get the stiffness of the leader's butt end to match the stiffness of the end of the fly line that you are attaching it to. This helps transfer the energy of the line to the leader smoothly and it definitely makes my casting more accurate. There are a number of other things that I do differently than shown with leaders, but I don't know how much can be digested in one sitting. This is the 1st video I've seen from these guys and based upon the limited exposure of the bow and arrow casting in this video they could use a few tips to up their game there as well.

Taking the rod apart- an older gentleman at a fly shop, told me that if your rod is ever stuck together, put your knees together, put the rod behind your knees, grab a hold to the rod on the outside of both knees, and while holding the rod, move your knees, apart, the rod will separate, because physics is forcing you to pull the rod straight

Do you guys usually use a 4x leader? I thought you would use a 6x leader for small streams.
@bluelineoutfitters3964
@bluelineoutfitters3964 Год назад
I usually buy 7.5 ft 4x leaders and then add 5x fluorocarbon tippet when nymphing on bigger water. When I cut a leader down to fish small streams I typically add 8-12 inches of 6x mono wild trout fishing. You absolutely could buy 5x, 6x leaders for your small stream rod. For me personally I buy the 3 packs a lot and that prepares me for small stream fishing and trophy trout fishing on big water with one pack of leaders. 7.5 ft 4x makes solid red eye bass leaders for summer time to. Even though you can go to 2/3x there. So to answer your question for economics I do and adjust. I often fish the same butt section of a leader for sometimes months, rebuilding it when needed especially on a small stream rod. So in summary I do, but you sure don’t have too.
@liamkingsbury7438

Liam. I use the triple surgeons knot. There are others. I can tie the triple surgeons quickly and it has worked for trout fishing well. A how to on knots we use is coming so watch for it.

It’s solid for short rods. Say 7’ or less. Especially 6.5 or shorter. Anywhere you fishing a short leader and you’re pulling the line into the rod tip a lot. Use a drop of knot glue to smooth it up and it’s 🔥. Good luck and thanks for watching.
