Congratulations on the video. I'm a 71 years old guy, third degree bjj black belt under Luiz Guilherme Guigo, former world champion. I enjoyed a lot your video because the strategy and mindset that you use is the same as mine to try to survive the younger friends at the gym. Congrats for the good work and regards from Brazil.
upgrading the software without damaging the hardware. This is real jujitsu, sadly we are flooded with sport bjj meatheads but thanks to professors and content like this
36 year old purple belt and I train at Checkmat HQ. No sense in training light. If you’re smart you can go full speed with the young guys. Flowing is good to warm up, cool down, and explore new techniques, but getting after it is what takes you to the next level. Just because you like to train hard, aggressive rounds does not mean you’re a meathead.
I have been playing this slow controlled long game for many years now, probably the last 10 at least. I am going to be 44 in a week or two and I know I want to roll for the rest of my life. As such I made my mind up long ago that I needed to play a smarter slower controlled game. This is an awesome video. I am now 25 years into BJJ and never want to have to give it up.
Totally loved it! I can see that... For me, its like watching jacques cousteau as a kid. So peaceful and serene yet dangerous and death defying all in the same breath
Thank you for sharing these “old guy” videos. As a 60 year old smaller (155 lbs) brown belt, I have to move slow. It keeps me safe, conserves my energy, and allows me to capitalize on my younger, bigger training partners’ mistakes. Osss
Hey Jimmy, awesome to have seen your comment! Hope you are well. I've started training bjj, I just got my blue belt. I always remembered you encouraging me to start bjj, I wish I had listened to you back then. Take care, Aloha! Sheldon H. I like this guy's channel, I followed him over from Roy Dean's.
I’m 52 and a brown belt . I would go crazy if I didn’t do this , at times everything hurts but after I’m done there’s no better feeling. Thnx for videos Rick
I absolutely love your videos and your philosophy on rolling! I’m a 52 year old newly promoted Blue belt. I simply can’t go 100 percent all the time like I could when I was a younger man! I’m just happy and thankful to be on the mats!
@UC03e6UNnV-oNz4Kwotg7eTQ Gravity is a deception so maybe better said the weight density , pressure,, and good angles, and understanding how to slow them down based on physiology and I guess some would say physics. Gravity is so ingrained from the conditioning of that theory pulled off as if to be fact in most minds because of repetitive social engineering. GRANTED I understand the desire to not actually have to think and keeping it simple under that overused word that keep us from thinking. Kind of like believing the sun 🌞 deity Helios is now 93 million miles up yet its local as are sun rays when its engulfed with clouds ☁️ just a few miles up. I get it though its much easier to parrot conditioned responses & celebrate traditions of men handed by the indoctrination centers and through the propaganda mind programming machine called the TV when we got home, than it is to look up and use common sense. They win if you refuse to use the frontal lobe they deliberatly flouridated poisoned manipulated forced indoctrinated socially engineered lied to about everything since birth with much success. Its just easier. And you'll know you're indoctrinated when your triggered response to anything that takes thought and simple observation and opposes or calls in question the narrative created and propagated for us throughout 🤔 and in the theme of simplicity like the majic behind the word Gravity you can utter fuck off conspiracy theorist and the say some to promote big pharmaceutical for free like a good victim like you need mods man. How dare anyone challenge the status quo programming of the elite. Who are polytheist sun 🌞 deity Osiris/Helios/NIMROD/BA'AL worship lover of death cult so thats ironic. Just challenging you to rethink or think 🤔 about a few things. Even the racist guy Darwin they put in place for the EVOLUTION model to help so many become atheists which is actually from gnostic polytheist texts by the fallen ones is a FREEMASON 33° satan/serius/sun deity worshipper and every Mason has to believe in a GOD/HIGHER POWER/RELIGIOUS DOCTRINE OF MAN to become initiated into the lodge. In other words there are no Atheists in FREEMASONRY and all presidents all astro NOTS ect are FREEMASON including Darwin who was used to mislead the deliberatly flouridated dumbed down poisoned manipulated forced indoctrinated socially engineered lied to about everything since birth mindslave masses to a Godless state as the pump our minds full of every filth & perversion so we are distracted and easily manipulated easily decieved easily misled easily thought for easily controlled ect while they boast of depopulation and con the distracted masses to give up our FREEDOMS under the guise of and for occult polytheist Luciferian overzealous religious SCIENCE SO CALLED religion called SCIENTISM/BABYLON returns as was written. As for the blind faith forced indoctrination religion of racist savages program called EVOLUTION out of the 6 different kinds of evolution only one is proven by the SCIENTIFIC METHOD and there's no change from one kind to another kind . Gravity was a majick answer Theory to kids questions to shut them up so they stop thinking,, thats been debunked immediately yet its still pushed as fact yet still called a Theory by victims of social engineering such as yourself. So please question everything and when you can use observational science as well before parroting the program only as if that is the facts. When its not. Think 🧠 question 🤔 everything 🤔
You know Rick is class when he celebrates the success of his student and doesn't 'ego react' when he loses position or is tapped. Outstanding mentality.
Greeting from Sydney Australia. I am a blue-belt under Professor Mario Yokoyama, who was promoted to black belt by the late Ryan Gracie. I started BJJ when Ii was 66 years old; I am now 69 years old. Your son is very skilled and I love the fluidity of both your movements. Excellent grappling.. Well done! I will learn a lot by watching you both grapple. Your videos are clear and concise not verbose, like so many others, i am learning a lot from your videos - thank you. professor🙏
As a 50 year old blue belt, with a fake hip and degenerative discs in my back, this may be my new favorite channel. I'm a big guy, and used to being able to overpower people, but I've had to change my game in the last year. Learning the patient game is definitely starting to work for me, thank you for your videos!
Nice to hear about someone rolling with a hip replacement. Also a 50 year old blue belt and just found out my long time hip/groin/glute pain was due to advance arthritis so I will be needing a new hip in the next 12-18 months. Was worried I may have to give up BJJ but happy to find out there are a bunch of us old guys out there still going strong with a new hip.
@@arneilson4450 54 y/o 2 week white belt coming off hip resurfacing (better for sports like BJJ). My hip feels great, its all the rest of me that feels so old after waiting too long for the surgery and allowing pain to keep me from being physical for the past 10 years. If i could do it over, I would have done it much sooner so I didn't loose so much fitness.
I am 43 and just started my Jiu Jitsu journey, this video was actually super cool to watch. You mentioned once it may be boring? honestly this seems to me like incremental, disciplined, technical Jiu Jitsu… it was a pleasure to watch it. Thanks for your content.
I am not an old guy but these videos are still helpful to me at 23 years old because of my smaller physique (151 pounds) and injuries from sports and such. I have a oddly shaped spine, I have had back pain since I was 7, my wrists are extremely weak and require a lot of healing and care due to manual labor, playing guitar and saxophone (which I go to college for), and past injuries. I’ve been doing bjj for going on 5 months now and i find I can not do a lot of things others can do (mostly lifting). I work out and I am in great shape but I’m trying to be more smart than I am physical and I learn a lot from the older men and women in the gym. Thank you for the insight from a perspective most do not look from.
Awesome story👍 don't worry about comparisons to what others are able to do, due to their gifts of physicality or athleticism, or for that matter, at the stage you're at, their experience and knowledge base. Their style... Just strive to improve everyday, to be better than YOU were the day before. Ultimately, you can control the consitancy of your practice. Never stop trying to improve, the aim of your growth is to be the best version of you... Let the other guys be the gym heros, or pseudo world champion wanna bees... You'll enjoy jiu-jitsu more, and you'll keep your enthusiasm and energy fresher, a lot longer, and likely won't get injured as often... Best of luck 👍😊 P. S. Get pre-wrap and tape your wrist... Every time... 😊
This is great! I'm a 27-year-old purple belt who has recently put on a significant amount of weight (over about the past two years at purple). My previous style was very athletic and loose. Because of my gas tank getting worse, I've had to transition to "rolling like an old guy" quite a bit, and I've benefitted from integrating that style. It's great to see these concepts laid out so clearly.
This was fantatsic. Your skill level, the narrating of concepts, and lack of ego when your training partner does well. Super pleasant to watch. Thank you sir.
Hi Rick, in Brazil I would call teacher. I am a 51 years old with a purple belt and I Just love your way of teaching. I can see tour respect for your students and It would be a honor to roll with you. Thanks for sharing your knowledge . Regards from Brazil . OSS
As a purple belt of similar age, I am working on my "slow and methodical" game these days. I'm bigger, stronger, and even leaner than most guys at my school and I do cardio regularly. But chasing 22yo's on the mat is exhausting when they set the pace. Based on the comments, it seems that you have many subs in their 40s and 50s that train BJJ. This channel's "niche'" could be to continue making vids for guys and women over 40. Tell us how to slow down younger guys and how to dictate the pace. How you use pressure and grips effectively. What's the best guard for an older guy? I would really enjoy learning more ways to set the pace and keep me in the sport longer. Thanks
I've never heard it called a harpoon sweep before! I've always known it as the side body sweep. One of my favorites! It was one of the first sweeps I learned and still use it often
I'm 58 and I just started. Our gym is almost all young guys. It's intimidating! This video is incredibly inspiring--as are all your videos. Thank you, Rick
53 and getting back into BJJ after a 18 year break. I really appreciate your videos. A lot is coming back to me as I pay attention. Thank you for your time and content.
Rick, I love these. Real rolling with you talking us through your thought process is so valuable. Please continue with these type of videos as often as possible!
One of my new favorite channels, as 48yo white belt, figuring out how to deal with a gas tank starting on half is a challenge. Love the patience, pressure and control used in here professor.
Damn, I'm only 31 (been training BJJ for 5-6 years now) and I've been dreading getting old and not being able to roll the way I can roll now. But seeing you roll has given me faith and hope that I can do this for at least 20 more years. Thank you!
No need to dread it Ajo. You don't get old all at once. There will be plenty of time to adjust your game as you age. Not to mention gaining skill which definitely helps compensate for speed, strength, quickness and stamina. I'm a 54 y/o 2wk white belt. It's tough but being physical again after years of injuries and surgeries is so rewarding.
Thanks for the content Professor! I find myself trying to do this already and I'm only 30, but BJJ is often my second work out of the day so I can only go for so much intensity/volume if I want to practice often.
Thank you this is very useful. I'm a 52 year brown belt that had back surgery 5 months ago. Looking at getting back on the mat next year. Going to be doing rehab exercises, yoga and conditioning for the rest of this year. Going to roll like this once I'm back.
59, started at a Relson Gracie academy about 2 months ago….LOVE IT ! Love watching this old guy video too. I’m overweight and my gas tank empties quickly so working on relaxing and breathing…also keeping all my weight on the other guy and resting there when I’m not in danger.
Nice, I am 65 well I will be in October, some of the young novices use a lot of strength against me and I end up being sore next day. Thanks for info. cheers from Australia
Wow! I'm so glad I found this channel. I'm 54 yrs old. Been training for over 20 years off and on sometimes taking long breaks due to several injuries ( the worst of which is a neck injury). This gives me hope and inspiration to keep on training. Thank you 🙏👊
54 y/o white belt as of 2 weeks ago. I really appreciate the narative on technique, strategy and old guy psychology. It's been fun getting back into being physical again after several years of injuties, illness and most recently hip resurfacing. But, it is discouraging to be at the bottom of such a big steep mountain as an old guy. So thankful to hear even as a black belt you need to accomodate for age. As they say, a black belt is a white belt that never quit -- gonna try to embody that mindset. Thanks for sharing brother, it's been very encouraging.
This man is the real deal. What impressed me most was his roll against the strong white belt. He kept it under control so the guy didnt react by using his 400 lb deadlifting strength, obviously Mr. Ellis would have still won but the change of injury is high. Kudos to both this was excellent. Also, the last athletic guy there were a few times Mr Ellis could have easily gotten the tap by going harder, but what's the point when the goal is for him to help the younger purple. I'm an older purple belt and I can see Mr. Ellis' skill and the respect that his students/the lower belts have for him. Excellent video! I will come back to this again this was really really good.
Rick: I am a new white belt (training since May 2021) and this perspective has totally changed my training approach. I had some great rolls this week because I took my time and waited for opportunities to advance to open up. Thanks Rick!!
I’m 38 and started a couple months ago .. This is great advice because I’m super competitive and losing positions sucks. Especially when you are try to get that cardio back and breathing control tame
As a 43 yeard old purple belt (and one of the smallest guys in my gym), I found this video so informative. An absolute gem. Thanks so much for sharing this!
Actually, this content is very helpful even for younger folks like me. I often try to force better position/submission and lose the position as a result. I need to roll more like you - with patience.
the commentary was great. So much good advice for us other old guys. I would list them, but there's too much. I learned a ton from watching this. Thanks for posting this.
I enjoy these videos. My original Professors always stressed to me about energy conservation and injury prevention. I've been using these tactics since early on and getting better with it. (35 year old, 160lb brown belt).
Very nice. Energy efficient and using wisdom.. it can be lost on younger, athletic guys. I have white belts thinking they got me when im baiting them and teaching them. But its ok, cos i used to think that way to. Methodical, previse movements, fully calculated and thinking several steps ahead = high level jiu jitsu.
the best escapes EVER!!! I think that as an older man, I should focus more on escapes than anything else. It feels good avoiding a mount, side control; using the opponents own weight against him for a good sweep, and or denying him a submission via an incredible escape!!!!
