In this video I go through a detailed overview of the roofing process for my studio shed. This is a barn style roof on a 10 x 16 shed. It's a more advanced roof than a typical garden shed. This is how you would install a roof on a tiny house, cabin, garage, or maybe even house. I'm using GAF roofing components - affiliate links below:

You don’t need ice and water guard on a roof that steep. If you do your drip edge and shingle overlap properly, you’ll never ever get water seeping under the shingles. On a standard 4-6 pitch, or even a 7/12, use it. Anything 8/12 or steeper, forget it. Water doesn’t run uphill.

I will never build a house myself but I learned a lot of details from you. That's great.

with the steep pitch of your shingles in the first slope of the roof you should have had more nails in each shingle. if you had had excess of the snow /membrane you should have used it along that transition of the roof pitch as this in the future will be a place of shingle failure and leaking. been in the trades and this is how they do it still enjoy the build keep it up.

an unrelated thought ahartford habitat for humaniny construction supervisor was working on a united church of chris. susjeggest a trio of guidelines. 1 be safe. if you get hurt oit will take time to heal. if you are scared of hieghts let a climbing person comb. no shame in decline if you feel unsafe. dont be a hero and risk a fall from unsafe heights what is safe for some may not feel safe for others. 2 dko good work. and it does not matter how much work you do. it it is not good. wi requires saints to undo not good work and trdo correctly. so it makes double work on takes time for to thhink and take corrective action or undo and redo. 3. have fun and learn something new. there are retraining and courses to cover alternate solutions. if it is a fun experience you will volunteer again . example . some of the houses that we worked on were 2 story houses on a hill . that would have pushed the roof line nearly 3 stories high. an idea from a habit construction supervisor jimmy webber was to get rebuilt roof trusses and build the roof on a platform. sheath that's roof and shingle it as it was closer to the ground. if any volunteer slid off it would be only a bruised ego with now broken bones. then a construction crane and pother trained hoist it to the top of the send floor top plates. then there was volunteer work of nailing hurricane straps to guaranteed the engineered trusses tay steady in hurricane winds. not sure of the net cost savings. but i thought it was a safe solution and possible savings with engineered and pressed trusses . . god took jimmy webber in 2021. i know jimmy upheld the habanero for humanity goal of building homes for god"s people. fyi jimmy and Roslyn carter where presidential spirit but it was start by the family of fillmore and linda fuller out of americus Georgia. supposedly habitat for humidity is the 3rd largest builder of housing for people in need of affordable quality building for people in need ..

Alright Awesome! One final question on shingles the first row are you supposed to match the pieces cut to the bottom design or does that even matter? First row and I guess all rows
@EveryotherKarl
@EveryotherKarl 4 месяца назад
It doesn't really matter. Just make sure to stagger the joints of the shingles as you go up.

So I’m about to install Ridge vents GAF Cobra 3 and we need 4 of them, now they don’t have a mesh underneath them and they look to be susceptible to insect breach what do you think should I get the mesh you use or place some kind of mesh filter?!
@EveryotherKarl
@EveryotherKarl 4 месяца назад
Hmm, I don't think you would use the mesh I used plus the cobra vents. I do think some type of mesh is a good idea though.

So I got GAF weather watch step 1 mineral surface leak lock instead is this applicable or so we need to get the one you got?
@EveryotherKarl

The one you got will work well as an ice and water barrier. I was just able to get a good deal on mine, that's why I chose it.

Ok so it seems my 10 row of timberline on first slope didn’t reach the hip to transition over (I have like 2 “to the edge) and now I don’t know how to continue with shingles considering they are rigid around the keys and the top is flex, any suggestions here ? Plus I’m not exactly grasping how you did yours either, thanks!
@EveryotherKarl
@EveryotherKarl 4 месяца назад
Well, I shingled the first slope and then did one row of shingles that draped over the transition. Only the top part of the shingle is actually bending over the transition, the "keys" or rigid face of the shingles are laying flat along the first slope, the upper part of the shingles is bent over and nailed along the second slope of the roof. Then I added one row of shingles running right along the transition of the second slope and then worked my way up to the ridge of the roof. The bent shingles might not lay flat at first, they'll need several days of sun and warmth to lay flat. It definitely helps to do this in warmer weather.

@@EveryotherKarl I Agree Winter time is not the best, thanks for the response sorry for the delay, AT&T services was out nationwide go figure, so I get what you are saying here however my hip doesn’t allow me to do what you did so I might have to run another course just so that I have enough slack for the next pitch!! However it will overlap quite a bit below the edge of the hip! I don’t know!!
