I got 2 dragon fruit cuttings in the mail and after watching this I put them both in water and left on the porch since I live in Central Florida and it's extremely hot so no heat pad needed. 1 week and they both have roots, this works very good. I have zero experience with dragon fruit yet they both rooted 🤗. I'm very happy. Thank you very much for sharing this.

Great video! While waiting for my heating mat to be delivered, this idea came to me since I had them laying around…fish tank (or any container) and an aquarium heater. It works! I laid the heater at the bottom…do not let heater touch the bottom if using a plastic container, for obvious reasons. I used an eggshell light diffuser as a platform in which I elevated above the heater with bricks. The key is warm water. I set the heater to 80 degrees F

It friggin woooorrrrrked!! I can grow anything in soil it seems, but every attempt I have made at cloning in water has failed miserably. I got a dragon fruit plant from my local nursery, mother nature released an atmospheric river on California for weeks straight, and my plant started rotting... I took 3 cuttings a few weeks ago and followed your advice to the letter. They have all rooted and are ready to go in the ground. I even got a clone of a damaged rose bush to start in the same way. Immensely grateful. +1 Loyal Follower

Hi Richard, thank you for your video, I plan to buy this heating mat & have some quesrions 1. do you need the thermostart to check the temperature of the heating mat or you just plug it in the outlet and use it ? 2. do you plug ( the heating mat) in the outlet continuously in 14 days (/until you see the root) ? 3. where you put the heating mat on, is it hot/ damage the surface that we put the heating mat during these 14 days ?

As you are so much into this hobby, please try this. I think it will work really well. You really do not need to change the water at all. First, I recommend using a bucket and put water in as you would normally do. Then pour about 20ml of bleach into the bucket to sanitize the water, the bucket and the bottoms of the cuttings over 1 minute. Then discard the water and put new water into the bucket. Then put an aquarium airstone into the water and connect it to an aquarium air pump. The air will be bubbling in the water and add a lot of oxygen into the water. This will help keep the water fresh forever. Bacterial growth will be minimal. The oxygen will help the stems root very quickly. Another thing I also like you to try to root and graft the stems at the same time. The idea is that you should be able to graft different varieties on unrooted stems and root them at the same time. This will save a lot of time. I have just done a bunch of grafts and root them at the same time. In a few weeks I can report the outcome. I expect success because grafting dragon fruit plants is so easy. I get 100% in my first attempt!

I followed the same technique - exactly the same heated mat and put the dragon fruit in water in a vase. Just over a week later and no signs at all of any root growth. What am I doing wrong? Does it matter how you cut it? The cuttings are mature cuttings (around 20 inches long) and had been left for almost 2 weeks to callous over. They were mostly cut from the stem part. Should I try again and try doing a v shaped cutting instead? I see on the v shape cutting it looks like you cut away the flesh but left a visible and protruding stem section. Is that the best technique? Thanks!

Just adopted a dragonfruit from a neighboring gardener who was throwing it out. It's in rough shape. I watered it for several days then transplanted it to the good soil in my garden. Watering it when it had previously been water neglected did cause some rot on one of the stems. It turned yellow and mushy. I cut it but there was some healthy green stem on one end so I cut that too. I will trim and callous that stem and try your method to root it. I've been watching for a while now and was planning to buy a dragonfruit with a bit of stem on it to try rooting. I think this might be easier to try my first dragonfruit propagation. Very excited. I don't expect I will get fruit in San Francisco weather but I'm moving to Vietnam soon and will start over there. Dragonfruit is so cool.

Hey Richard! I found your channel less than 2 weeks ago and I’m already into a full on obsession, I have 3 cuttings right now and 14 more species on the way this week. I was trying to follow your directions but would appreciate a few clarifications lol. Did you say you put stem cuttings directly into the water? Because I did this with my stem cuttings and it seemed like the bottoms started deteriorating, turning a kind of brown yellow for about .5-.75 inches from the base of the stem. And also for the regular cuttings, I did a V cut and exposed a couple inches of the cambrium (or however you spell that lmao) layer. Did you say to let that dry for 7-10 days? Or did u put it right in the water after cutting away the flesh of the stem to reveal the center? Thanks again for all your info man I’ve learned so much more from you than any other RU-vidr. Epic gardens wasn’t kidding when he called you the dragonfruit god haha, now when I’m talking to my homies about dragonfruit I’ll just reference “the dragonfruit god” and he already knows who I’m talking about😂

Hey Richard, Great video, as usual! Your cuttings are rooting much faster than mine, even though I have been using bottom heat. But mine are outside, so the air temperature is much lower. Do you know what temperature the water bath is? Depending on the wattage of your heating mat, and the ambient temperature, it could be anything. Is it 70, 80, 95F? I've been setting mine to 80, but maybe that's too low. I don't want to cook them.
@JessicaVanderhoff
@JessicaVanderhoff Год назад
Did you ever settle on the perfect temperature? Truthfully I'm not very exact with my temperatures. I use a regular heating pad like you'd use when your back hurts, and I set it to low if I'm sprouting tomato seeds in a peat pellet (which are short and not very dense, so the heat travels easily to the seed) and medium for a pot of dirt or anything larger in size. If I'm insure, I will touch it randomly and aim for it to feel gently warm. My house can be up to 76F during the day, and we keep it 65 at night, so presumably the plants' temperature also varies as the room temperature fluctuates. I've had pretty good results in general, but this will be my first time trying to root dragonfruit.
@paulclifford6941
@paulclifford6941 Год назад
@@JessicaVanderhoff Hi Jessica, I've been playing with temperatures. I find that cuttings are very reluctant to root at below 60F, and at 80-85 they root quickly. I have a mat outside in a greenhouse. Without the mat the soil temperature is an average of about 60F in the summer and 45-50F in the winter (in Newark CA, San Francisco bay area). But when I turn the mat temperature (measured between the mat and the bottom of a pot) to 99F, then the soil temperature comes up to 65F in the winter and 80 in the summer. In the winter that keeps them alive and growing, and in the summer they root very fast. Indoors, I use the small 20W mats like the one Richard shows in his video, and the soil temperature for a 2" thick layer of peat moss (or coconut coir) comes up to about 80F for room temperatures of 65-70F, and they root easily in that warm media. I place a bin of them in a window that gets a lot of light, but just an hour or so of direct sunlight. I haven't yet tried rooting them indoors in just water with bottom heat. I had tried that outside in the summer without bottom heat, but they didn't root under those conditions.
