Thank you. Waste my money getting swim lessons at Moana pools here in Dunedin New Zealand. Zzz they just made us swim back and forth the length of the pool. I asked to be shown how to somersault turn at the wall. Just ignored lol 😂 I do get annoyed spending good cash for nothing! Retrospectively, I don't think they were qualified to teach swimming. I've learned more here on RU-vid!

Depends on where you get lessons. Most places will teach only the very basics to get you started. Its rare to get lessons that focus on specifics but not impossible. You almost have to find a private party willing to work with you. I had all of four lessons last year and have been on my own since trying to figure it all out. BTW I learned to swim at age 48 last year. I was a dancer for years and had little time for anything else, hence why not learning as a child.

Can you please explain how to breathe effectively, whilst so far below the surface? I'm a beginner in swimming, and am finding the intake of breath really tricky at the moment whilst rotating. Any additional tips? Thanks in advance

When you swim with your head kept down a bow wave forms in front of your head. This leads to a trough, or depression conveniently forming where your mouth is, and below the waterline. Simply rotate your head without lifting it up and breath. It can help to breath from the corner of your mouth, think Popeye the Sailor. Try to keep one eye under the waterline. If you can do this you’ve cracked it!
@ajitthomas1651
@ajitthomas1651 3 года назад
At the end of your rotation, look at your shoulder as your mouth is just over the surface. Actually only the top part of your mouth should be open as you breathe in. Then, turn your head back in and breathe out through your nose.

It is a great video to see the whole body movement. Continuous and slow motion. However, it is very confusing for me. Rotating is a side effect of having a proper stroke. I find it quite misleading asking a person to rotate. When you have a good stroke, you don´t even notice you are rotating. The same happens to me with counter-stering.

Never seen anyone literally swimming on top of the water. As far as I know "on top" means to stay streamline parallel to the surface, just like the swimmer in the video is doing and not with the legs dragging down toward the bottom of the pool, since that does make it much harder to move forward. Human bodies are not balloons, so it would be seriously stupid to try and float like one. However, to swim on top of the water, which means just under the surface is a must If one wants to be able to breath properly, because if one is any deeper under the water, rotate as much as one wants, the face will stay under, unless one lifts the head, which will drop the feet as a result and extra energy will be waisted to kicking up.
@Forestier1
@Forestier1 Год назад
It may mean someone trying to swim with their shoulders out of the water, as I saw yesterday. Needless to say they weren’t moving very efficiently nor very fast, and the lower body therefore drops.

But my coach is saying that we should be more out of the water because there is less resistance. More body under the water more resistance. Go figure.
@swim3602

The trouble with trying to swim on top of the water is that the water is then not supporting your body weight. Take a look at a video of Micheal Phelps swimming freestyle and note his body position. I hope this help!

Your coach is right. You don"t have to fight hard to stay on the top of the water. That premise is wrong imo.

@@swim3602 that's true for maybe 200 and above but for 50 and 100 you def want to have some lift to your stroke to get on top of the water and it is a totally different stroke. Sprints and mid distance/distance are two totally different strokes

@1houndgal
@1houndgal 5 лет назад
I disagree with this video in that one should not have to fight to stay on "top of the water in the first place". The deeper in the water you are, the more water resistance you have to work against to move forward and tend to pull. Being on the "top near the surface" make it much easier to "catch, pull, and recover", to kick, to breathe, to streamline and glide, and to balance your body in a great position for distance/speed. On top, it is easier to be an efficient swimmer if you have great overall form.

@@1houndgal so,its good to swim on top of the water you say .i am bit confused now . Can you provide me with some solid explanation from experts in this regard🙏
@thomasmuller8935
@thomasmuller8935 5 лет назад
@@fajarmangadan2476 water is denser than air, thus the friction is higher (more molecules working against you) and with higher friction the more resistance you have to overcome to accelerate your body through the water. That is the reason swimskins/wetsuits are used, to reduce the drag.
