Excellent video! I started my rowing/weight loss journey middle of January. I've followed the instructions you and others have given on RU-vid based on form and training. When I started I was 287 pounds. After watching and trying to get my form down... modified with my belly, I am happy to see I am rowing as you showed us here. So it is March 11th and I weigh 258!!! I still have a long journey, but I really appreciate your videos, they keep me motivated.

Came here after googling "rowing with a belly" and man, thank you very much. I was watching a couple of tutorial vids and it was simply not possible to follow the guides with my belly in front. Knowing where to adjust without harming the overall process was the key. Thank you very much. No my journey can start.

You can probably see that I sound a little awkward talking about this... it’s just because I don’t want to offend anyone! Curious to know if anyone found this offensive?
@phillipbotha7920
@phillipbotha7920 5 лет назад
As a larger guy(140 kgs) at the moment and going down), having rowed in excess of 20 million meters over the years, the best form is to keep your knees inside your elbows, and practice makes perfect. One criticism, 90% of the belly comes off in the kitchen even if you row until your lungs bleed. Too many people are sold that exercise alone is the silver bullet
@phillipbotha7920

I'm a seriously big dude. I have to thank you. There's not a lot of great information like this out there for us- partly due to people being afraid of offending everyone. You handled this with tact and grace, and it's appreciated. I've been wondering how much modifying is okay and safe to do. I have a rowing machine coming today or tomorrow. I used to do yoga to try to lose weight so I'm a bit more flexible than most dudes my size, and the belly constantly gets in the way of several poses. Seeing you with the pillow on is super useful and gives me a better idea of what rowing might look like for me. Also greatly appreciate you mentioning where the force needs to be placed (in the heel), because my instinct probably would have been to lift the heel for the extra distance. In short, this was super useful. You kept it classy, and it's going to keep me safe. Thank you!

@@ashleysmetana5281 I ended up getting a concept 2 after being on the wait list for a couple months. I ended up selling it a week later lol 😂 simply because my house is small and I get bored extremely easily and rowing while being in a confined space with no stimulation was driving me nuts and I totally lost my motivation. So now I go walking in the park 30 minutes a day hopefully to build my way up.

‘Put your feet on the ground”. I’m slim, but have arthritis in my lower back, so just like a large abdomen, I can’t flex forward in recovery using the foot plates. Putting my feet on the ground allows much better recovery into the catch. I can still do the drive (my machine is on carpet so there’s no slipping). Give it a try. BTW, I have a Waterrower clone so it’s close to the floor to start with. Surprisingly, I don’t experience back pain with rowing. Thanks.

wery informative - I used to row lightweight. Now thirty years older and 25 kg heavier i can recognise the problems with a belly starting to row again. I find it very helpfull to lower my feets (compared to my settings as an competitive rower). It helps me to keep the heels down. The stroke gets a little longer, and the movement in my hips increases - on the concept 2 just one hole lower than normal. This i s just my experience. Let me hear what you think.

Thanks so much for this, my primary concern with getting the Ergatta is how close together the foot placement is on top of my size, being 6'4" 350+ with short legs makes for all sorts of fun contortions to get certain workouts done

Love the info and energy you provide. Question - what about technique for on the water rowing since pulling in to the chest all the way would create an issue for tapping down and out? Would their stroke not be as long? Do they compensate by overreaching at the catch? TIA

This is great - thanks!! Really this is not a problem to be ashamed of, but big belly or big boobs does not want to stop me exercising the top.

I currently have a huge gut, much like the pillow... and I have had a Concept 2 in my basement for 2 years, only used it maybe 10 times. My gut gets in the way so much. That and I feel like it just doesn't have enough resistance. I know it's not supposed to feel like a squat, but when I do a full motion, that fan moves so much that the next motion is too easy and I end up going back and forth and it frustrates me beyond all belief. My legs are already... powerful from carrying around 295lbs and being a former Army Scout who did weight lifting and ran 5 miles a day in a... previous life. I'm so discouraged, I know it's supposed to be lightweight endurance training, but I'm so used to feeling resistance that the rowing machine just drives me crazy. Though to be fair, I also have a Bowflex and don't touch that either. Depression and anxiety are a horrendous demon to deal with.
