A video essay comparing the boxcutter scene through visual language.
TWITTER: / lancellotifilms
In this video essay, we undertake a critical examination of Breaking Bad counterpart, delving into both the strengths and weaknesses of each adaptation. By scrutinizing the linguistic nuances and editing choices employed in both series, we aim to elucidate how the other version falls short in certain aspects compared to the original. Through this comparative analysis, we highlight not only the educational value of studying adaptations but also the importance of recognizing shortcomings in cultural translations.

Mike instinctively yanking his gun out is one of my favorite minor details in the series. He's about as loyal of an underling as you can get, and the shock and surprise is so overwhelming to him that he instantly detects gustavo as a threat without even realizing it's his boss he's aiming at.
@absinthealice

There are so many moving parts with Mike, it's crazy. The only other character in the BB/BCS universe that comes close is Lalo. The game of chess each plays is past 4d and into otherworldly. Very intelligent characters. Outside of Walter's scientific intelligence, the street smarts of Mike and Lalo make them superior in that sense. With all honesty, and giving no sarcasm.. Bravo Vince! ❤😊

I always enjoyed how we get three different reactions from the people in the room. Mike grabs his gun because he perceives a threat. Walt backs away because he is frightened. Jesse leans forward because he isn’t afraid to die, in that moment. Both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul are such great character studies
@EverydayLinguistics
@EverydayLinguistics 16 дней назад
I also thought he grabbed the gun more for Gus's safety. Gus has attacked Victor, and what if Victor tries to fight back? Mike protects his boss unconditionally. I know, he was losing a lot of blood, but Mike pulled out the gun immediately before he knew what was going to happen. At least, that's another angle on it.

@MrFruitPrimate
@MrFruitPrimate Месяц назад
The way the audience is naturally predisposed to look down on Jesse and empathize with Walt in the beginning and the way it’s completely subverted by the end is probably the biggest masterstroke of the entire series. Jesse is a degenerate drug user, but he truly has a good heart, he’s not without ambition, but every time he’s has to forsake his morality you can feel him fight it, his arc is one in which he tries to be a better person and is consistently pushed to be worse by Walt, every time he fights back he’s punished, but he continues to try to do the right thing. Killing Gale and later seeing the skinheads kill that innocent kid messes him up in a way that Walt doesn’t need to reconcile with. At the end of the day Jessie may kind of be a piece of shit, but he’s a victim in so many ways and it feels like he deserves better. He’s in an evil world the whole story revolves around making and selling meth, Jessie gets treated like he’s a natural part of that world, but apart from being a user and maybe a small time dealer in the beginning, it doesn’t feel like it’s his world, but Walt makes it his world from the moment he kills that dude in the first season, he’s on a path going one direction and it can only end one way. Jessie has hope, he IS hope, that’s what he’s meant to represent at the end of the day.

9:40 I think you glossed over mike's look here. The entire time Mike has been waiting for Gus to arrive, and its likely he's been wondering what the hell Gus is going to do to react to this. Here we almost see a bit of fear in Mike. He knows Gus well, and that he's capable of insane things when those he cares about are put in danger. He's almost try to tell Gus through his gaze "keep it cool, don't do anything unreasonable". To which Gus violently kills his own employee, the most unreasonable thing to do in that situation.

The power in Vince Gilligan's work is really about recognizing subtleties that actors bring. Jesse was supposed to die in the first season and Gus was cast in a bit part as a "friendly man who sells chicken". They could have gone merrily on with the original ideas, but wisely rewrote the scripts to fit the actors. Walter needed the father/son dynamic that develops to bring out his character. Jesse is a key part of his legacy. Meanwhile, Giancarlo Esposito brought such a quiet menace to his character that his presence demanded a bigger role. There is simply no way to replicate that dynamic. The script followed the cast, so a different cast would require a different story.

IMO jesse's expression to victor being sliced isn't purely anger but more something along the lines of "ready to fight". It's like ferocity mixed with fear as he watches Gus very carefully. It also seems like Walter and Mike "lost their footing" and sense of control whereas Jesse was already indifferent/detached to the whole situation beforehand. Jesse's reaction also involves actual mental steps/ reasoning whereas Walter and Mike react out of pure instinct.

Seeing Okupas at the end was a shock. It's definitely one of the best series I've ever seen, it gets you hooked from the first second to the last. I seriously hope you make a video about it. It really is a masterpiece, but unfortunately it never was massive outside Argentina and a couple of countries in SA. It's quite possibly my favorite series ever, along of course BB.

The only thing missing was the color red. Idk if that was on purpose and we were just supposed to look at framing and reactions but color is a huge part of Breaking Bad. The other version doesn’t have that. At least from what i could tell its one of the few times that Jesse wears red. Walter is in Blue because well its blue meth. Not sure of the reason of Mikes color. I really got into color because of this one analysis of Blade Runner 2049 that explained color and framing really well and I can’t find it anymore. How much care you can tell he puts into those shots. One is when you see K tell a lie in the precinct and sees that is something that he can do. Otherwise really great. I learned things from this scene i wouldn’t have otherwise. This is a really good analysis. I was really taking in all you had to say. Thank you so much.

I think there's another interpretation of the scene where Jesse is staring in anger at Gus. Jesse just got back from killing Gale in cold blood, and has clearly been dissociated up until then, contemplating the weight of his actions. When he sees Gus kill Victor in cold blood, he sees a cold-blooded killing not dissimilar from the cold-blooded killing he just committed hours before. So when he gives Gus a look of hatred and disgust, Jesse's actually projecting his own self-hatred onto Gus because Jesse can't cope with how he just murdered Gale.

This is by far your best one. I liked this video so I watched all your others. I found that though they're framed as essays, they end up being more excuses for you to string together a series of observations, which leaves me feeling like I missed the point. Where this video succeeds is that the goal was only ever to reveal how the original version was more effective, to which your observations act as case in point. And the point by point comparison to metastasis helps both in offering an immediacy to your arguments and by providing structure. Really I think this issue wouldn't if your writing was better, maybe there was a bigger point and you either failed to find it yourself or just failed to convince me of it. Either way, I'd stick around to watch more videos like this one, but your others not so much. My advice would be to play to your strengths (which don't seem to include essay writing) and try to define your own voice a little more

English isn't even my native language, so I suppose I'll have language deficiencies. That said, speaking of writing, you wrote a lot to say very little.

Wow !! Mentioning Okupas was fascinating. As an Argentinian I believe Okupas is one of the greatest series made here. It really does portray our lenguage, and what you would expect in marginalized people from the city. It's really not that famous here. You MUST watch "Los Simuladores" which is probably also top tier argentinian television. Please make a video if you ever do :)

Okupas fue un boom, y más después de que lo subieron a netflix. Pasa que obvio, afuera de Argentina no fue muy popular, pero en los 2000 todos hablaban de la serie.

The adaptation Just can't work anyway, especially as a shot for shot remake, because part of the Breaking Bad world is the setting. The series is partly about the relationship between the US and Mexico, on the border. The fact that Walt is based in America matters to the story a great deal.

How tf do you have so few followers. The video is of great quality. I learned a lot and the idea to compare the two was great. From acting to editing it was really inspiring to see how "small" decisions create drastically different results. I think by showing this you kinda solve the problem we have with film analysis. It's often bloated and overcomplicated. The person who does the analyzing is often times grasping for straws and it feels like justifying things after the fact just for d*ck riding a director they love. But here, you literally show what happens if you don't, as a director, over analyse your shots. It makes those editing and acting choices real.

Great comparison and analysis! I wasn't really aware of this Colombian version and that it tells the exact same story. But it's extremely interesting to see, what nuances and directing decisions are at play to make something a masterpiece versus some average daily soap I only want to add that "Metástasis" is an incredibly good title for the show

Another great video. I would describe Jessie's reaction as contemptuous. He is fearful, but his feelings for Walter, Gus, and himself amount to a contempt for the situation as a whole, for the necessity of violence.
