Something I really like about Priya's interviewing skills is that she validates how much labor the interviewee is doing. I feel like we've been conditioned to see food service as unskilled, and it's really cool to see Priya push back against that.
I’m living for this series! Telling the stories of Culinary POC in NYC is something I’ve been yearning to watch. This series is incredible and shines the culinary spotlight on people who would be overlooked by the culinary intelligentsia. Extraordinary Talent and great food exist in diverse areas of the food industry.
Man it’s videos like these that I’m glad Priya and other POC from Bon Appetit get to create content on a more inclusive platform. Even small things like “we may not be able to try the best food because they don’t have the savings to start a whole business” and especially understanding that from an immigrant or first gen experience. I love this concept! I buy from IG businesses too and all the ones I know are from WOC. I’d love to see more from this series
I absolutely love this series. It's a great exploration of the DIY/"make it work with the tools you have" food culture that isn't often given a platform to share what they do. I get tired of the high profile chefs/restaurants always getting prioritized in food media and this is an excellent way to showcase worthy food entrepreneurs and home-trained cooks working with that they have! Great reporting and investigating Priya!
this was in the last video too, but one of my favorite parts was priya straight hyping up lyana and ALL the roles she's fulfilling (while also working a full time job??). we love to see it!
I've definitely experienced the sold out in 5mins trying to order for myself lol... I had to start setting an alarm to keep me on point to order b4 sell out lol💯💯💯... I totally support BRV not only for the great food but also wonderful customer service... Lyana is a hard worker that cares about her customers and its very much appreciated 🙏💞
Love this series, it’s giving people more perspectives on how hard it really is to feed people. We depend on restaurants for when we celebrate and commiserate (and everything in between), we love them, we love their food but we must come to cherish those who prepare our food and make sure they are also taken care of.
watching priya do food journalism and see her ask questions is just so captivating. She understands what questions to ask and shows a great deal of empathy when interviewing people.
One great thing that came out of the pandemic: people found new grooves, everywhere. One story that really stuck with me: that lady selling bomb ass food out of her window in New York. Power to the people.
It's only been 2 videos so far but I am obsessed with this series. I love how Priya and the production team approach this entire topic. Priya herself is a great food journalist - she speaks with a lot of passion, care and thought, and that dedication and knowledge really comes through in the way she interviews them and interacts with each profile so far. Super excited to watch the rest of the series now! I'm not American, but in my country, home-based businesses are really commonplace. Lots of our local home cooks, bakers and chefs thrive on social media and they rely on a network of word-of-mouth advertising (and occasionally get featured on popular food review sites/social media accounts). It helps that my country is pretty small, so access to these different home-based food businesses is quite convenient.
Home-based businesses aren't as common in the US primarily because of all the bureaucracy. It's not totally unwarranted. Food safety is after all a huge deal so it's important that home cooks have whatever permits they need to be a good vendor or use a kitchen that has been inspected by city health officials. Obviously, some people bypass that by selling on the down low and literally out of their home kitchens. But anyone trying to follow city, county or state laws knows there are a lot of barriers to entering the food industry in the US. But personally for my own safety I wouldn't want to sell directly out of my home so having a delivery service makes sense!
OMG this is such a great series :') thanks to Priya and the staff for making this possible and hilighing POC in the culinary world. it's so refreshing and inspiring!
Thank you so much Priya for sharing Black Rican Vegan's story with us (you have me at my desk crying btw). As a creative now entering the entrepreneurial space, seeing stories like these keep me motivated and they are such an inspiration.
Not only is Black Rican Vegan absolutely awesome and the vegan Puerto Rican food looks great, but the entire series is legendary. Priya interviews without overly dominating the discussion. She really lets people speak and tell their stories. NYT Cooking, keep doing this series. Or commission another I guess. Since I think we only have one more episode right now in this season.
Thank you for bringing up how much work the food service industry does!! Specially during the chaotic last two years, it’s nice to see Priya validate the work that goes into this. Opening a restaurant truly takes a village
Man I’m about to cry! She’s inspiring me to finally go after my food business dreams. Next time I’m in NY, I’m definitely ordering this. Keep goin sis!!!
This looks amazing. I am vegetarian and recently started trying to reduce the amount of animal products i use (ideally to nothing) and I really love seeing this very delicious looking vegan food by a seemingly nice and well adjusted person. I would love to taste that. Keep it up. Greetings from Germany
This was such an interesting and inspiring story! Thank you for bring it to our attention. Love that behind all this series there's a group of talented POC women, Priya is amazing and so is all the team. You can always tell the difference. Keep up the good work, this is the food content that was missing and that I feel like we needed the most, especially during this precarious time we're living.
I saw in the trailer there would only be a few episodes released. I really hope that NYT Cooking will reconsider and make it a featured series with more episodes. Priya is an amazing interviewer and the people who are highlighted in these episodes are so hardworking and passionate. Their stories are really inspirational. In a time when everyone is really struggling, especially in the food industry, it's important for the hard work and dedication that these entrepreneurs put in to be acknowledged. This series shows that certain New York hustle and comradery that's hardly shown on screen. As a restaurant industry worker that's been pushing through during the pandemic, these stories are really validating and inspiring. Keep up the good work everyone!
This episode is so incredible, so proud of this woman and the fact she has been providing authentic food to the communities! That tres leches cake looked to die for!!!
This is my favorite series! I didn't know that running a restaurant on Instagram was a thing until this video. I admire Lyana and the other employees at Black Rican Vegan so much
That oyster burger looks delicious. Growing up my Dad would go to NYC for business and his business colleague's neighbor was a mushroom farmer, so my Dad would come home on the plane with tubs of fresh mushrooms
Wow this video made me want to keep going with my food business. So relatable and inspiring. Keep doing your thing you are doing a beautiful thing for the world. Can’t wait to try your food! Blessings 🌱🌱
