Great video :D you could also change the wight from that unrelated Dovarth guy to being the Madame Brantifax herself, who was so stricken by guilt and grief from killing their disabled daughter that she turned into a weight and fled through the shadow crossing. Now she plans her revenge on the living and the players must stop her and her undead army!

Love the addition of the evil magic item being pulled by the wight. I love the idea that the wife is actually the wight, cursed because of her involvement in her deformed daughter’s death (thanks steelysam), additionally to tie in the horse saddle in the shadow fell the addition of a dilapidated stables on the chateau grounds can link her to the skeletal warhorses. The addition of the ghost dog is lovely too and the need to put the ghosts to rest before crossing is such a good hook to have the party investigate the rest of the manor.

Your changes make this adventure worth running. I was so confused as to what the “adventure” was, when it seemed like a spooky death house like experience that just ended when they figured out the wereravens were being spooky. But leaning into that lore really helps. You could start a cool shadowfell adventure by making the wight a servant of an extra dimensional evil or something. May be a good adventure hook to start a homebrew ravenloft campaign using the upcoming book!

Remember the potential hooks at the beginning of the adventure. It is not just a treasure map. It is a map found while researching inter planar travel. I would say one of the adventurers or all of them should have the goal of exploring the shadow fel and domains of dread or the vistani and their realm crossing capability This party should not "in theory" pass on an opportunity to travel to the shadowfel

Wow, okay, this was great! I'm still going through Mazfroth with my party, but I'm definitely using your video as inspiration for some changes when I run Book of the Raven. Love what you did with the daughter's spirit and putting her to rest, very tragic. Thanks for your time to turn this adventure into something memorable!

So glad I found this; you got a sub from me. I was this close to ditching this adventure altogether from the book - though your direction has saved it. Thanks. How so well versed producers like Christopher Perkins got this so wrong, is bamboozling.

I'm a fairly experienced DM and this adventure was a real pain in the ass to run. It's essentially just a bunch of locations without an adventure tied to them. My players also found it incredibly boring and I really can't blame them. A lot of changes like the ones in this video really help, but I would still tell people to skip this adventure rather than bother making those changes, since there are other adventures in much better shape within the book. It's mind boggling to think that Chris Perkins put this together himself.

Running through this adventure now before the party jumps into Witchlight carnival and the Feywild. This has really helped me better set up the story for the house and area. The session stopped with the party just entering the house and having experienced some of the “hauntings” as well as a true haunting. Considering this weekend is Halloween, it seems perfect to finish it out! I’m so glad I found this video. Thank you!

Just played this and got TPK'd 4-man level 4 party, it was shoehorned into a homebrew campaign. While I think it was a little light on the reasons as to why, we kind of went into it thinking it was a quick little encounter to bump up some EXP, oh how wrong we were lmao.

Thank you for this video! Thanks to your tips my PCs have been having a GREAT TIME of it. Especially leaning into the haunts, having the ever present Heluthe-The-Raven, and the Scarlet Sash are very fun to RP. We should be wrapping up today with the climatic battle in the Shadowfell. I will definitely run this adventure again for PCs that are into horror, investigation, RPing, and that maybe want to jump into the Ravenloft setting.

Absolutely love these changes, made notes as I went along to use these and how to tweak them slightly again to mesh with the story my party has set up so far - running all of the adventures in order as a somewhat linked campaign, everything here brings me from confusion after reading the story to awesome excitement to take my players through the house and story! Also works brilliantly for how I've set up other things to blend the extra details I need around it :D Thank you so much for this, as a new DM you've got another subscriber becuase I see your videos being invaluable tools along the way!

This video got you a sub from me. I want to run Candlekeep Mysteries as an epic campaign for my players (through levels 1-16) but Book of the Raven concerned me so much, it's honestly the most flawed adventure in the book and I have been afraid that, despite the strong start of Joy of Interdimensional Spaces, the slower nature of Mazfroth's Mighty Digressions and then this clunky walk through an abandoned mansion followed by an extraplanar encounter (that as written would probably be a TPK at third level, except against the most dedicated minmaxers) would be so difficult to make fit well that it would probably break interest in the game before we got to the really meaty stuff like Shemshine's Bedtime Rhyme. You helped me to see how to tie all the elements together into a cohesive whole and I love it. I had planned to play up the wererat bandit as the true villain of Mazfroth's (maybe by having him be the killer of the leader of the Amberdunes) but now I'm very interested to see what your suggestions are, so I'm off to watch that video.

I’m a youth DM and know the kids will not be able to figure out any of this plot. So I have someone giving them the map. Hiring them to seek out a person suck in the Shadowfell. Their research shows a doorway at that location, but not the specifics of exactly where.

My biggest problem with this adventure when I played this as a Player was the absolute lack of a plot hook to entice adventurers to travel to this area and do anything. We literally stopped everything we were doing, traveled for 3 months and got to this haunted house and then we basically put the ghosts of the family to rest just because "hey, while we're here."

I’m running this as my first time DMing tonight so I’m a bit nervous. But I think I’m gonna have the Vistani (and specifically Madame Eva) visit the party on their way to Chalet Brantifax. I’m gonna have them give a clue about the raven being something more than a raven, then also say something like “Until we meet again” so that they get a hook to go to Barovia to do Curse of Strahd. We’re doing it as a one shot but I think it’ll be fun to do it this way. If I do it that way then I can keep the information about the Vistani relevant and also use it to further the one shot, then if they want to continue into Curse of Strahd then they can.

I intend to use this adventure as a hook into Curse of Strahd for my party. The graves will be a crossing into Ravenloft rather than into the Shadowfell.

Great ideas Have the weight be an actual threat will tie up the loose end of making it optional I love the idea of putting the spirits to rest 1st. That opens up a lot of opportunities

This is really amazing! I'm starting off a homebrew campagne and I intend to use this as a starting adventure. And this video answers basically every "issues" or confusion i had with it! So thank you so much. The only question I have is: How do I tweak the combat for a 3 player party? Because i feel like it is already rough for a party of 4-5.
