Thank you for doing this. Candle, keep walk through. I am legally blind and have always wanted to DM but reading. Takes a really long time for me. So having you explain things is so helpful to me. Now I can listen, listen a few times Then slowly write out my notes for running this campaign. Other people in my group take turns being Dungeon Master but I wanted to give it a shot so glad I found your content.

One fix I used that I really liked was to have the graveway opening to the Shadowfell open and visible to the party. The portal is being fueled by the remains Slyphine that have created the connection. Having died under such mysterious circumstances, she is not fully at rest. Over time that connection weakened the barrier and in "recent days" has opened a full on portal. The wereravens are aware of this and concerned because they don't know if their base of operations is safe to use now. Rather than the battle being for the saddle, it becomes one of going into the grave to get Sylphine's remains, bring them back to the real world and lay her to rest.

I can definitely see myself dropping the wereravens into a future campaign, they're just fun dudes and the idea of joining a secret society is something a lot of players wouldn't be able to resist.

When I read this adventure, it seemed obvious to me that it was originally written as an insert for Curse of Strahd. I think there’s also some great hooks for Hexblade warlocks with the Raven Queen as their patron.

I switched out the Ghouls for Zombies which are easier to deal with and fit in with the Wight better. A Wight creates Zombies with its Life Drain attack, and can have to to 12 Zombies under its control. See, it fits exactly.

Running this one today. Changing the end as it takes place in Barovia and will be using the Shadowfell gate as a way to travel back to Toril.

I just finished running this for my group and they loved it. I used your suggestion and ran it like Scooby-Doo meets Castlevania where it starts with very light-hearted Scooby-Doo antics, except it's really the house of a monster-hunter family ala the Belmonts. Appropriately, I made all the ghosts significantly more badass, and added an armory in the storage attic before the party met the comically earnest Scarlet Sash, and then the shadowfell portion was full Castlevania action.

OK. I see that this is a video from like a year ago, but I have listened to it over and over again. I am running a full campaign using the Candlekeep Mysteries adventures in order beginning to end. As the dm I am needing to connect each of the adventures and are having things going on between the pre-made adventures in the book. So fae we have had 3 sessions leading to Chalet Brantifax. Your video is extremely helpful to me. This has been the most difficult and complicated adventures in this book as far as prepping to run it. There are so many lose ends and dead ends and so much lore to keep track of. Thank you for insights.

Great video! Thank you very much, this is extremely helpful. I'm dropping this adventure into Storm Kings Thunder. The themes are totally different, but I think it'll be fun. Going to have an NPC direct the party to Candlekeep for research on Giants. Super stoked!

I’m running it as a oneshot tomorrow night. Still fuzzy on all the components, but I’m sure I’ll have it ready for tomorrow. One player even threatened to play a Kenku. That will work well into my plans if he does.

I love the setting of this adventure, but what the heck is up with the Vistani plot from the beginning? It seems to me, that 1) the Vistani, 2) the Chalet, and 3) the Shadofell aren't tied together enough.

They definitely left it up to player interpretation, so I've decided that the one shot I'll be running today draws some connections between some of the vague details. For example, Baroness Brantifax is the anonymous author of the Book of the Raven, but has long since moved on from her travels to settle down with her family. The hag that stole the bones of the child is a night hag that has been feeding the baroness, baron, and the baron's hunting companion with nightmares. The night hag once arrived at the chalet as a mystic, at the request of the Baroness, who was deeply concerned of stillbirth. In exchange for guaranteeing the baby will be born, the 'mystic' claimed the spoils of the Barons hunts for a year. His hunting companion is the wight, corrupted by jealousy and nightmarish restless sleep. Driven by these, he gave the Baroness the tools necessary to grant her first child a merciful death, hoping that it would tear the family apart. Realizing his failure, he led the Baron and his 9 year old daughter to a wolf den on her birthday hunting trip. The Baron didn't recognize his trusted friend had brought them to a trap, and thought he may have just been tracking the wrong animal. When she died, the Baron blamed himself. The Brantifax couple grew closer with this pain, angering his companion, who left in the dead of night due to the beckoning whispers. When Brorn died, the night hag began tormenting the Baron, causing insomnia and the fits of sleepwalking that ultimately led to his demise. The baroness in her time alone has found it impossible to move on from the chalet. The evil whispers from the graveyard keep her from visiting her family, while her grief and new nightmares continue to take their toll on her mental state. Eventually she goes to confront the whispers, using knowledge of an ancient ritual from the vistani she once travelled with to open a shadow crossing and dispell the dread on the other side. To use the shadow crossing, the souls must be put to rest; Brorn with a collar, to represent his unwavering loyalty, Baron with the holy symbol locket, Sylphene by a letter from her sister, and the youngest by granting the others peace. When the party arrives in the Shadowed Necropolis, they will discover that the ritual did not work. The hunting companion has turned into a wight in control of 7 zombies and 5 ghouls. Only 1 gargoyle perches from the centermost point of the mausoleum. When the saddle is taken, and the staue of orcus that was stolen from the wereravens, from the hidden compartment, the 3 warhorse skeletons will rise from the bones, and a Shadow with the visage of the Baroness will attack the party. Opening the rightmost sarcophagi will reveal inanimate bones with a gold locket, inscribed with a B. At the feet, a small effigy is made from the daughter's bones and hair. In the leftmost sarcophagi is the night hag, polymorphed into the form of Baroness Brantifax, who pleads with the party to help her return home to her family. She doesn't know how long she's been stuck here, but she claims she cannot process emotions properly due to the effects of the Shadowfell. She knows much of what the Baroness wrote in her diary, and can answer questions, though does so foggily. Her goal is to get the statue and escape, by deception, theft, and magical means. Upon returning to the graveyard, a 5th grave's broken tombstone will be repaired, revealing the Baroness' name, and offering a chance to place the pendant here and put her soul to rest. If they do this, the peace is felt across the chalet, and the Book of the Raven reveals the author's name while within 10 ft of her grave. They can keep the additional journals I've added for context/lore to turn in to a local NPC, as proof of their completed investigation.

Any source of bright light I believe also eliminates a shadow crossing so the wereravens are probably actually making sure the players can get back (albeit by crawling out of the ground) rather than being stuck in the shadowfell with no way back because the shadow crossing itself has disappeared. addition: I'm running this in a Rime of the Frostmaiden campaign where there is permanent night though so it isn't too much of an issue.

I have spent too long now trying to figure out why there is a staircase in C12. Do you happen to know? The staircase at the south wall in front of the door in C12. Is it just a small staircase to raise up a bit? Why is it there? It's such a small detail but one I know my players will ask me to explain and I honestly don't know why it's there.

So i have 3 players that will be doing this as a one shot at level 3, a barbarian, sorcerer, and a wizard. I also have a level 5 grave cleric ally that will be ported with them, do you think that final combat will be too difficult for them? This will be a sidequest since my two other players are out for easter. I wanted to run this i just wasn't sure if it would be too difficult especially with too squishy mages

About to run that one in a few days, I must say I'm a bit disappointed that all the lore exposed in the book, with the Vistani story, is actually useless. I'm afraid my players will think the main goal is to find what happened to the author, and be a bit sad when they'll find out we will never know.

DMs Beware! This chapter needed more editor review. Some contradictions - e.g. Baron's dog died before and after he did. Not much for were-raven motivations. Good for flavor and ideas, but will need re-working.

this is adventures definitly fits better into a campaign than a one shot, where you can spend the time and play with the scarlet sash some more!
