Welcome to class! I'm Trevor and I post D&D videos every week on Wednesday, in this video I unpack how to run combat as a DM - inspired by a conversation with Mr. Rapidash on Reddit.

These tips are wonderful! Counting up the hp makes so much sense and will be way quicker 😅 Also really like the tip on bunching enemies into initiative groups. My combat with seven enemies felt laggy last week and that would have helped keep the pace up.

This is super helpful, Thank You. I used to play and DM AD&D and could not find a group that played OG AD&D(yeah, I'm old). I got roped in to DMing 5e at a gaming shop which has been a challenge. Especially Surprise and Initiative. I'm also trying to get used to DC. The Rogue class seems really overpowered to me, so I have not quite gotten DMing balanced with a player in our group who is basically a cat that can pick locks and create more damage in combat than a fighter can with all their bonuses. Anyway, this video is very helpful and thanks for the surprise link on surprise! PS: I like the painting you have in the background a lot!

every combat isnt lethal or to the death. great tip. let ur PCs interact with the environment... outside there could be carts or horses or walls and roofs in a town or city. undreground there might be water, pitfalls, stairs, statues or rooms with furniture they can use in the battle for cover or to climb, swing or throw into the path of an enemy.

You never said what I’m supposed to do with the dice. What dice do you use? what do the numbers mean? My goblins were supposed to fight and I have no clue what to do to make them attack. Do I attack one person or the whole party? I’m so confused.

I'm happy to further clarify. Each enemy is run by the DM just like the players run their characters. You, as the DM, decide who each baddie attacks. You follow the "attack" action - generally rolling a d20 and adding the attack roll. If you beat the targets ac, you roll damage. Hopefully this helps clear it up a bit.

there is no theatre of the mind and the grid is a must since you are required to count ft and see the positioning of characters. What are you talking about? Just be clear - combat is the moment, where people who did not care to read the rules drop out. It`s simple - read the rules and play by the rules, there are no "theatre of mind" in the core rulebook and the game requires you to know combat rules. Period
