I think the key to your system is the expand-ability, so well done on your part. I really appreciate the detail you go into - that helps even idiots like me grasp the concepts and considerations needed when designing an off-grid system. Knowledge is power... lol. I follow several channels in different climates so as to get a broader understanding of how it can be all about location location location. A system I will build in Ohio will differ slightly from yours, but there is still a ton of info I'm getting from your vids. My differences will be more on system capacity but the core concepts are the same. Thanks for sharing! 🤠

From designing my own, I found the panels are the cheapest part these days. To go up from a 21kW inverter to 18kW is a few hundred dollars, so it's cheaper to go bigger than you think. Also, brands and source of supply. Panels where I live are $250 each, but quality ones direct from China are half the price. We have cheap electricity at 18c kW, so return on investment and upfront cost have a huge impact on viability. I ended up at 30k for 54kW (3 houses sharing). Batteries? I went AGM because it was cheaper upfront and the new salt water batteries will be ready by the time I need to replace them.

I hope you still have the old water heater. Because you can use it as a NON HEATING 'holding tank' feeding the New tank. It saves you from heating very cold water in the winter to room temp water from the old holding tank. It's also water storage that's already in the house.

Do you have a wood stove? Clothes lines? Propane (Inverter) generator for emergency backup? Microwave cooking with three (3) microwaves. Large 1.5 cu ft Toaster Ovens pre-heat quicker, and use less elect. in the long run. Conventional Ovens have 4 to 5 cu ft interiors'. Really the only time a large oven is needed is when cooking a large turkey (my experience)... Try living on a 4000 watts of solar panels (I just added a few more panels). Count your blessings. You have an AWESOME solar system.

I do have a wood stove and am putting in a clothesline. I have a propane tank for backup and will be getting a gas stove. I bake a lot of bread, roast veggies, etc so I need a large oven. Point of the video was to encourage those who can only afford a small or medium sized system, that with proper thought and management, they can run a full modern home.

One of the options that is available on more expensive inverters (think SolArk) is the ability to have a diversion load. If the batteries are full, and the sun is still shining and there isn’t more load in the house, you can dump that excess power into heating water. Get a tempering valve and set the max temp to 160 and voila, enough hot water for a large family. I love the heat pump water heaters but haven’t needed it as my closed loop Solar water heater/collector is giving me literally free hot water in Arizona from March to about November, when my wife reminds me to turn the water heater circuit breaker back on! Love my eg4-6500’s so far!

I have the sol ark and that's exactly what I'm doing. I also have a ciculator pump hooked up. so my first hwt is electric set at 150. then I have my propane tank after set at 140. circ pump keeps both tanks at 150 while the sol ark smart load is running. less propane consumption

I've been off grid for about 20 years. I'm using an outback system that I bought used and is almost 30 years old... My battery storage is 5KW and 2800w pv... Seven people in the house with two kitchens and two refrigerators and two dishwashers and two sets of laundry washer and dryer... When I first started out it would have been damn near a half a million dollars to set up a system like he has. But now it's pretty damn cheap. I'm thinking about two EG4 6500EX with 16 KW panels and 30 KW batteries.... Is there a way to set up a water heater on those that only goes on when the batteries are full? Also with two inverters I don't have 220 v ac... Is it possible to turn one of them off easily on rainy days When my battery bank might be low and I want to eliminate 90 w of constant draw from the inverter? Is it actually possible to have 16 KW solar panels with two inverters? The website claims it is but signature solar seems to think otherwise based on a email they sent me saying it can only handle 5900 watts pv per inverter

Your situation is pretty similar to mine as far as inverters and power needs. I have 3kw more of panels though and that makes a huge difference. That way you can charge and use appliances at the same time. I added that same water heater just before I installed my solar. And that’s a game changer also. The heat pump option only pulls around 700 watts. With another 4kw of solar and a couple more batteries you could easily run everything you want.

We have a 1000 gallon buried propane tank and run quite a bit of stuff off of that. Water heater, stove, dryer, etc. This helps reduce the overall electric load but does make us dependent on propane. Of course in a SHTF scenario, we would scale back our usage significantly and could make that tank last several years. Having said that, we don't think about electric usage hardly at all. The only exception is the Harvest Right freeze dryer that is an absolute pig and draws a boatload of power.

I run my house on a 6k low frequency inverter. I put 1500w heater elements and set it up on a low voltage relay so that it only comes on when the voltage is at float or higher. Installed a mini split AC that can only run when the state of charge is 75% or more, unless the well pump is disabled, which occurs when the PV is less than double the battery voltage. My wife likes AC at night. I use 4 low voltage relays to shut down luxuries first, like AC and hot water, necessities last like water and refrigerator. I’ve been off grid like this over a year now and my wife and I have gotten comfortable with having reliable power without all the outages that occur regularly when it rains or the wind blows, or they have rolling blackouts like they did during snowmageddon here in Texas. During the summer when we run the AC at night, we usually have 45 to 60% left in the mornings. I like the idea of the heat pump water heater. Cool the house while heating water. It is good to learn from one another. If not for videos like this I prolly never would have found out how to get off grid for under 10k.

Energy management is important to me as well. Not because I run on a solar system, but because my truck (Freightliner Cascadia) has an APU (small diesel generator that provides electrical power and runs an AC unit for when I'm parked) with a 1500W (peak)/1200W (continuous) converter to change from 12V DC to 120V AC. I do cook sometimes in my truck. In my truck, I have a 4.3 cu. ft. fridge/freezer, a Mr. Coffee coffee maker (the most heavily used item), a 700W microwave, a rice cooker/crock pot, and a small electric skillet. My computer, phone charger, and wifi router are always plugged in. The fridge uses about 200W, coffee maker is 900, crockpot runs 650, and the skillet around 750. The fridge is figured to be on always, so the remaining wattage isn't enough to run more than one at a time. So, I learned to plan my meals accordingly. Same principle, smaller scale.

Thanks for sharing. I received my EG4 6500 EX’s and I’ve been documenting my own installation journey on RU-vid. A question for you that I have for you is regarding your washing machine while running on your solar system. When I run mine, during the agitation cycle, I’m noticing the lights inside my refrigerator are pulsing in sync w/ the cycle on the washing machine. Have you noticed anything similar when you run a load of laundry? It seems like my washing machine is about the same age as yours and we’re using the same inverters so I thought I would ask. Thanks again!
@CountryLivingExperience

You're welcome. I do get some light flicker when certain large loads are on. I have yet to talk to Sig Solar about it. I suspect it has to do with the load balance in our main panel.
@AdamDeLay07
@AdamDeLay07 Год назад
Hmm, ok. I’ll have to do some more investigating. A flicker when a larger load comes on is expected but not a pulse when a load is running. Especially when my inverter is running less than 10%. I plan on talking to Signature Solar as well, just figured I would ask since our environments are very similar. Thanks again!
@michaelrich6923

Question about the shaded panels. What kind of output (watts) do you typically get in the evening when the sun has set behind the trees so there is only indirect light on the panels? I'm currently using used panels and the drop off is pretty significant for me (to less than a few hundred watts), I'm curious if those newer 455 watt panels handle that shade better. Do they at least give you a reasonable amount of power until the sun has completely set for the day?
@grahamcampbell9261
@grahamcampbell9261 Год назад
Moving to microinverters (One per panel) would help the problem a lot. Each panel then work individually rather than each string working to the lowest level due to shading
@CountryLivingExperience
@CountryLivingExperience Год назад
Many newer panels are equipped with bypass diodes and some are split cell. Mine incorporate both. This allows a partially shaded panel to produce power even if a portion of it is shaded (unlike old panels). Many panels do not work in indirect light and even if they do, they do not produce enough voltage to run the inverters. They give a good amount of power for at least 4 to 5 hours in the middle of the day. You can add micro inverters to help with some shading issues but they can be expensive.

We have a 16K grid tied ground mounted system which was turned on Sept 20/22 and a 5 ton geothermal system. Today we are -200kWh on the meter and are charged .256 per kWh. So far the highest number for the solar has been 86.4kWh on 9/23/22 which was a very sunny day. We typically use 25kWh per day. Our solar starts going into shadow at about 3P but we do have microinverters. BTW we aren't wealthy just worked hard and were smart with our money. I'm retired and 71 and my wife will retire in three years. Many people can afford solar but the mindset about money has to change. Hey this is money you'll spend anyway! Have you ever given any thought to using the AC In on the inverters? I know depending on how your AC panels are set up it might not be worth the cost to have a grid line wired in before your panel that your solar system is powering.
@CountryLivingExperience

Gotcha. That's my plan as well, but I know it will be a while before I'll have my usage balanced out with how much battery I have and I don't want to worry about the power going out in the event that I'm away from home for some reason. My plan is to try and use SolarAssistant to monitor my battery levels and once the battery drops below X percent, have the grid take back over until I get enough sun to recharge the batteries (I know you can have the grid recharge the batteries in this instance but in my mind it defeats the purpose of trying to go off-grid). How do you homeschooling your girls? Could you do a video please with more information about homeschooling and how exactly it works?
@CountryLivingExperience
@CountryLivingExperience Год назад
There are several curriculum that we use including Khan Academy online. The State of Texas gives some guidelines in subject areas for study and that is it. I have thought about doing a video but have not wanted to deal with the crazy people out there who inevitably would say ridiculous things about homeschooling.
@ashleehouse5204
@ashleehouse5204 Год назад
In addition, if I may, there are several that are accredited where you send in work and get report cards if you want to go that route. We have done both accredited and not. This year we are using ACE, the subjects are broke down into 10 or so smaller books and that seems to help them not get overwhelmed. There are online lessons, video lessons, or book lesson plans depending on which curriculum you choose.

Wow. Took me a long time to find this video. With your specs. Learned a lot useful Bunch. Thank you. 8.8kw panels. 13kw Inverting power. 30kw battery storage. Medium house is 6-9. Saw some peoples with 8kw on roof top with 1600sq foot home. And some with just one Tesla PowerWall Battery. I can't Fandom your 13kw Inverting Power. Is your Inverter 1300 watts every hour? or is is 13 kilo's as in 13,000 watt every hour. Do you have 30,000 watt battery power.
@larrywong7834
@larrywong7834 11 месяцев назад
"The Tesla Powerwall+ maxed out at 9.6 kW, but now Tesla is listing a power output of 11.5 kW, which is undoubtedly for the new Powerwall 3"____ from that Tesla spec... Implies you have have near same as 3 Tesla Powerwalls.

Just go to my solar playlist here.....ru-vid.com/group/PLe8gvCbPFkexFmUtg3xRS4sTZQ1Ve-ft1. Easy to find what you need. Inverting power (the 13,000 watts or 13kw) means that I can pull 13kw in electrical loads from them at any one time. So, I can run a dryer (4500w), an electric stove (2000w), water heater (5000w), and a instapot (1500w) all at the same time (totaling 13000w). I now currently have 46000 watt hours of battery storage.
@larrywong7834
@larrywong7834 11 месяцев назад
@@CountryLivingExperience I need to think thru this. Guess I need to muddle thru this. From EnergySage website____ "As a general rule of thumb, the size of your inverter should be similar to the DC rating of your solar panel system; if you are installing a 6 kilowatt (kW) system, you can expect the proposed inverter to be around 6000 W, plus or minus a small percentage". I gather thats for a Medium size home. 1300 sqft home. Looks like it needs a 6000 watt Inverter.
@larrywong7834
@larrywong7834 11 месяцев назад
You have 8.8kw panels. Thus a 8800 watt inverter can put out 8800watts AC current easily without tripping or shutting down. Is your 13,000watt from your Inverter the surge limit? Or is that 13,000 watt steady like a hour long no tripping or shutdown. Is your panels under powering?

Do you understand that a government rebate is not a $1 to $1 exchange and that I would still be spending thousands to "upgrade"? Please do your research before making ridiculous and uninformed comments.
