I'll take a crappy stamped piece of sheet metal that is close in shape over a flat sheet of steel any day. At least you have something to work with. Your welds .... Yeah not pretty but they will get better and they get ground down and rewelded so it's all good in the end. It will hold just fine but will take more rework time. Might try getting a cheater lens for your welding helmet. I need to get one for mine cause that up close vision is harder and it does make seeing the puddle easier. Hopefully I can get out and work on the mustang a little. the better 3/4 brought home a bug from south america that took us out since thanksgiving...

Yup...Yah spend enough time in manufacturing and in factories you really understand the compromises that are made out on the factory floor. Trouble is, fewer and fewer folks work in places that "make things" so understanding the dynamics of building and assembling begin to get lost in the reality. Nice work guys!

Great video as always. Panels never fit right. Do the best you can. I remember an old article in Mustang Monthly the bodyshop guy laid the new pan on top of the old, drew a line and cut both pans old and new at the same time removed the old one and butt welded the new one in. I was amazed.

I just haven't had success with the top down method. I tried it, will try it again. 😀

I overlap and screw the 2 together, weld the cut. Trim the excess on the other side and weld again. Too much work and I’m okay at welding just not trimming hahaha 😂

Nice job. The factory floor pans in my 1975 Trans Am have those stamped crosses in them, so these reproductions might be modeled after the later year cars. What is the plan for the emergency brake cable hole, you mentioned it is on an angle in the replacement pan?
@AutoRestoMod
@AutoRestoMod 4 года назад
We'll be dealing with that when we put the new cable in. I want to test fit first, then repaired if needed.

You can hit tack it ! Which means to tack really hot and heavy and smack it with a hammer as soon as done tacking like right after while it’s still cherry red hot! I’m a welder certified that’s done in fab shots a lot it’s common to do depending on the jov

Alot of fiddling and whittling! My 72 has that X, so most likely it probably is a 70 thing. There was several small changes after 70. Keep up the great work guys. If you need any reference pics from my 72, just let me know.

Hey guys! Another good video! I had a question y'all might be able to answer. I have a 1971 Mustang Mach 1. Recently I discovered dark oil leaking from my rear passenger wheel. My original thought was that the in wheel brake cylinder had rotted away and the dark color was from the deteriorated rubber. I opened it up and the brake cylinder actually looks like its been replaced before, at least not ~50 years old. Anyways, no leak coming from there. The leak is coming from the axle, just underneath/around the wheel bearing area. There's a small pool of oil in the brake drum as well. I figure this is my differential leaking into the wheel. One suggestion from an older engineer that I work with, whom I also respect, was to take it to a shop that does diff fluid swaps, have them siphon out the old oil and fill it with new oil and see if that stops the leaking. Should I do this? Otherwise I need to find somewhere that will repair/replace the gaskets and maybe even the diff itself. I might have to do that in the end anyways.

Its leaking at the axle, just do the repair and stop fooling yourself

You most likely have a bad seal. I'd recommend doing a bearing replacement and seal set, you know...while your're there. =)

@@AutoRestoMod How intensive is that repair usually? That's the part I'm unsure of. Not sure if I should try doing it myself or take it to a shop instead.

Hopefully will be doing this same thing on my 67 Stang. The front drivers floorboard is gone. Only thing that keeps me from fred flintstoning right now is some license plates stuffed under the carpet.

I would have used some weld thru primer on all those welds especially in those hidden areas exposed to the elements
@AutoRestoMod
@AutoRestoMod 4 года назад
But even weld through primer burns up with welding.

I prefer not to use the air saw for cutting material. A 3 in cut off wheel is much better then use the air for making turns
@AutoRestoMod
@AutoRestoMod Год назад
A lot of it is personal preference and how you use things, I like the air saw for being able to make corners lol.
