I this video, I demonstrate what it takes to safely descend down the 7 mile stretch of Fancy Gap mountain in Virginia. I did this video with rookie truckers and the general public in mind. Hopefully, at the conclusion of this video, many viewers will have a better understanding of the precision it takes to execute behind the the wheel of a big rig. Safety is always the goal!

Race to the bottom might get you there quicker than intended. 😂 I remember asking mom what those hills of sand and stuff were for at 5-6 years old and she told me. Thank you for all the effort you put on this videos man, I'm a local driver but I basically don't deal with mountains like that, I've only done it once I was using 8 gear to come down that mountain, I felt bad at the beginning seeing other semis passing me by and I thought I was way to slow then I realized some of the guys who passed me was on the side of the road smoking his breaks, nothing happened to him. Fancy Gap is beautiful. Not beautiful when I got 42k of paper rolls in the wagon and I gotta go up the grade. 😅. Coming back down I just hit the jakes on stage 3 and just let it eat. I keep it usually around 45 and I don't even have to touch the brakes. Another beast of a grade is I64 coming through the Ne0w River Gorge. Thats a monster. 7 to 8% grade on that beast. Great video brother 🙏🏿

I drove down the Grapevine grade in CA and my back brakes were smoking some by the end. Box truck with automatic transmission and no jake or engine brake... it would upshift on its own due to high rpm. Then brakes would be needed each cycle to get it back down shifted. Fully loaded 26K lb gross box truck with 14K lb trailer but the trailer brakes weren't working. Got the brake controller on after that... which is tricky on a modern electrical system that had no output for one. My Coach RV has an engine brake and that works great. I would like to retrofit the box truck with a jake brake but maybe not very practical. 2014 Navistar DT466 7.6L

My dad said go down one gear lower than you went up in.
@presy_jay
@presy_jay 6 месяцев назад
That kinda works when you drive a truck with no power. That could get you in trouble if you drive a powerful truck (like mine). With this same weight in my trailer, I can go up fancy gap without dropping a gear. I wouldn't go down 1 gear lower with that same weight. A truck with no power would be crawling up the mountain. Hence, the reason why that theory works when you drive a truck that lacks power.

If a driver has issue with fancy gap they don’t need a cdl. It’s the easiest to come down with a speed set for car/trucks that is the same. 😂 it’s like 65 all the way down. I want to see some real mountain driving.
@presy_jay
@presy_jay 6 месяцев назад
I disagree with your statement. Fancy Gap Mountain is underrated. People start flying down, not realizing it's 7 miles down. It is a variable speed mountain. I see guys doing 80 mph down Fancy Gap all the time. That is just plain stupidity. What if there's stopped traffic halfway down? That's a lot of 💀 people. One day, it's 65 mph. The next day, it's 25 mph with zero visibility from the fog. Have you ever driven down fancy gap while it's snowing at night? I have! I driven down a 17% grade before. But you know what? I treat all grades with the same respect! Secondly, you have to remember that there are rookie drivers out there. That is precisely why I did this video. Everyone doesn't become an expert driver overnight. It takes experience to get here.
