Episode 4 - Inflatable Kayak Sailing - Upwind Runs!
I've finally completed a full day of sailing upwind!
Wind was blowing 6-8 knots (with 12-15knots gusts on Windy.com), I managed to sail 5-6 knots (might have been 7-8knots when gusts hits) on this kit.

Loved your videos! I just got the Air Fusion inflatable (the old one) kayak, with a shit rudder I'll fix and next week I'll buy the Rapid Up sail for it, $80 and only sails downwind, but eventually I want to figure out a real sail like you did. Very good application of your ingenuity and keep making more videos, dude!

Thank you! yeah there are ways to improve these inflatables, also try explore some options of using plastic-welding for mounts and fittings as I'm also redesigning my rudder mount as we speak. Running upwind sounds harder than it is on the water, once you've got the "balance" right with leeboards on, you'll be running upwind effortlessly! 😁

I love in Florida and it's still kinda warm here, and I've been thinking about turning my intex explorer k2 into a sailing rig, I live a good few miles away from a lake that I normally pedal to on a bike, and I'm going to see if I can make a super lightweight version of one of these out of PVC pipe n stuff and make some wheels to pull it to the lake. I'm glad I found your vids so I know it can definitely be done

yes you should! I was planning on doing more videos, probably do more on budget inflatable kayaks like Intex, easily sourced but still sails. Remember, keep the build simple and not 'bulky' to handle is the main goal. Smooth sailing to you man! 😁💪🏼💪🏼

Excellent work. I am planning on buying the same kayak and build a similar rig. I am also thinking on adding floating PVC sides to the exo-structure to make it like a trimaran, that would drastically improve the stability and allow for a much larger sail and greater (safe) speeds.

Thank you sir! Yes this kayak is durable and practical. You could add PVC outriggers on both sides, yes. But the only trade off would be the amount of drag you get from the outriggers. Counter this force with a big main sail + jib sail 💪. That sounds fun! Keep us updated with what you got on GPS speed logger vs wind-speed weather reports!

Thank you! The base was left empty (most of the time) because I prefer to sail 'lightweight'. It didn't capsize or tip over too much in 8-10knots wind. Also if it's filled up and the kayak capsizes, the filled base might pull the sail kit down to the ocean floor! You could fill it up with fresh water for you to clean up the kayak or shower on the beach? That was an idea by one of our subscribers recently, which was brilliant! :P

Hi, the sail kit itself costed me about £40-50 since almost everything was built from free materials like plywood, crutches, fishing rod and the golf stick handle. The sail was from a recycle centre costed me £5 and I cut it to a smaller size to match the kayak. I bought the IKEA Parasol base, screws, eyebolts, ropes and stainless pulleys. What type of boat do you have? 😁

I sailed out at sea because we live by the beach, but it'll be great to try out on a flatwater lake tho, might get greater speeds! yes you should give it a try, do keep me posted 😁👍

Hallo Herr "Snacks In The Backpack"! Schade, daß Sie weder in Ihrer Videobeschreibung noch auf Ihrer 'homepage' (inflatable-kayak-sailing-the-build) Einzelheiten zu Ihrem bunten Segel mitteilen. Den Hobbysegelmacher interessieren einerseits ja immer die Bezugsquellen für alle entsprechenden Bauteile und andererseits die Art und Weise der Herstellung. Auf Ihrer 'homepage' schreiben Sie, daß Sie beim Segeln in Episode 1 feststellten, daß das schwarz-blaue Segel eine Segellatte und einen Baum benötigt. Das flatternde Segeltuch läßt doch aber gut erkennen, daß bereits 2 Segellatten im Segel verbaut sind. Auf der 'homepage' präsentieren Sie dann das bunte Segel im gleichen Schnitt mit 1 Segellatte und einem Großbaum. Wenn sich der Teil des Segels unterhalb der Segellatte verwindet, muß das doch wohl an der Ausführung der Segellattentasche gelegen haben. Gern hätte ich mir angesehen, wie Sie diese konstruiert haben. In Episode 3 ist dann der Hobiesegelnachbau plötzlich schwarz. Leider steht auch da in der Videobeschreibung nichts über das Segeltuch und die Segelherstellung. Ich kann bei ihm aber nicht diese unschöne Verwindung erkennen, die Sie bei dem bunten Hobiesegelnachbau bemängelt haben. Im Video kündigen Sie ein weiteres Video über die Herstellung des schwarzen Segels an. In Episode 4 wird aber dann plötzlich ein buntes Segel mit klassischem Hochtakelungsschnitt und gänzlich ohne jedwede Lattung präsentiert. Sie haben bei diesem nur den Baumniederholer vergessen, welchen Sie bereits am schwarzen Segel im Einsatz hatten. In Episode 7 erscheint dann plötzlich ein durchsichtiges Segel. Das bietet zwar eine optimale Sicht, doch ist es auf dem Wasser dann ja gar nicht als Segel an einem Segelboot zu erkennen. Auch zu diesem Segel ist die Videobeschreibung mehr als spärlich. Um was für eine Folie handelt es sich? Warum wurde das bunte Segel eigentlich durch dieses ersetzt? Was ist an ihm anders? Hat es bereits ein eingearbeitetes Profil, wie Sie es aus dem Video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-t_uDLp5GGos.html gelernt haben? Schade, daß es auch zu dessen Herstellung kein entsprechendes Video gibt. Wie beurteilen Sie letztendlich seine Segeleigenschaften? In Episode 8 gab es zwar ein wenig mehr Wind als in Episode 7, doch sah man da eher Sie, als das Segel bei der Arbeit. In Episode 7 herrschte etwas wenig Wind. On your 'homepage' you write that while sailing in episode 1 you noticed that the black-blue sail needs a sail batten and a boom. But the fluttering sailcloth shows that 2 battens are already built into the sail. On the 'homepage' you then present the colorful sail in the same section with 1 sail batten and a boom. If the part of the sail below the sail batten twists, this must have been due to the design of the sail batten pocket. I would have liked to see how you constructed it. In episode 3, the replica of the hobi sail is suddenly black. Unfortunately, even there the video description says nothing about the sail cloth and sail making. Hi Billgeiz, my name is Harris by the way. Nice to know you sir. Firstly, my apologies that our style of a blog doesn't meet your expectation for the information you're looking for. Bear in mind, our blog and videos were published in a diary-style update, hence why it was not in chonology. Also, the entire Inflatable Kayak Sailing project was an experiment using used, recycled or repurposed materials that are not consistently available, hence why I did not post more about the colourful sail from this episode. As you may have guessed, I am not a full-time RU-vidr, I have a business to manage hence why the videos are not posted regularly. I'm a sailing enthusiast just like everyone else following our blog and RU-vid channel. The difference is, I may have the knowledge, more tools and willingness to share my knowledge freely with everyone so that ..Everyone can sail. The blog has just been recently updated if you haven't seen it. The black/blue sail was very-very raw from my crazy idea of sailing the kayak. There were no planning put into the project, I just went with what I have in my storage to sailing it out. I'm not proud of it, but it sailed down-wind. The small black sail was also an experiment made from offcuts I had from making a backpack. That was inspired by some photos I've seen online from solid-body kayak sailing. Also I'm not proud of this build, hence why no further explanations on the blog. It's a hobby worked from a small space, so I don't have everything in one big box, so I missed the vang, but it was optional. I could do without using a vang. The vang didn't significantly improve my sailing, so I left it at home. The transparent sail was also very experimental, more for the material than the sail design itself. The material didn't last 2 sails out, hence why I revert back to the fail-proof colourful sail -again. On Ep 11, the coloured sail video clips were plainly decorative, it has nothing to do with the intended content of the video which was about the rudder transom design. Hope that explains everything. Der Unterschied besteht darin, dass ich möglicherweise über das Wissen, mehr Werkzeuge und die Bereitschaft verfüge, mein Wissen frei mit allen zu teilen, damit ... jeder segeln kann. Der Blog wurde erst kürzlich aktualisiert, falls Sie ihn noch nicht gesehen haben. Das schwarz/blaue Segel war sehr, sehr grob von meiner verrückten Idee, mit dem Kajak zu segeln. Es gab keine Planung für das Projekt, ich ging einfach mit dem, was ich in meinem Lager hatte, zum Ausliefern über. Ich bin nicht stolz darauf, aber es segelte gegen den Wind. Das kleine schwarze Segel war ebenfalls ein Experiment, hergestellt aus Resten, die ich bei der Herstellung eines Rucksacks hatte. Inspiriert wurde dies durch einige Fotos, die ich online vom Festkörperkajak-Segeln gesehen habe. Außerdem bin ich nicht stolz auf diesen Build, daher keine weiteren Erklärungen im Blog. Es ist ein Hobby, das auf kleinem Raum betrieben wird, daher habe ich nicht alles in einer großen Kiste, daher habe ich den Baumniederholer vermisst, aber er war optional. Auf einen Niederholer könnte ich verzichten. Der Niederholer hat meine Segelfähigkeit nicht wesentlich verbessert, also habe ich ihn zu Hause gelassen. Auch das transparente Segel war sehr experimentell, mehr wegen des Materials als wegen des Segeldesigns selbst. Das Material hielt zwei Segel nicht durch, weshalb ich wieder auf das ausfallsichere bunte Segel zurückgreife. In Folge 11 waren die farbigen Segelvideoclips schlicht dekorativ, das hat nichts mit dem beabsichtigten Inhalt des Videos zu tun, bei dem es um das Design des Ruderspiegels ging. @@sitb- Werter Herr Harris! Vielen Dank für Ihr Antwortschreiben. Sie müssen sich nicht entschuldigen. Jeder macht seine Videos so, wie er sie eben macht. Ich erlaube mir lediglich immer ein paar Anmerkungen aus meiner Sicht der Dinge zu machen - wenn mich ein Thema interessiert. Vielleicht können die "RU-vid"-Filmer ja das eine oder andere davon bei ihren zukünftigen Filmen berücksichtigen. Nicht selten kann ich mit meinem Nachfragen doch noch ein paar relevante Informationen aus den Filmemachern "herauskitzeln", von denen diese meinten, daß sie nicht so wichtig seien. Die Videobeschreibung bietet ja eine Möglichkeit noch nachträgliche Informationen zu veröffentlichen, welche man beim Aufnehmen der Filme vergaß oder zu dem Zeitpunkt selber noch nicht wußte. Ein Tagebuch hat doch eigentlich die Eigenart, chronologisch zu sein. Ohne Experimente würde der Mensch heute immer noch in Höhlen wohnen und seine Nachbarn mit einer primitiven Keule erschlagen. Die Experimente haben uns zu Wolkenkratzern geführt, aus denen wir heute die Befehle geben und unseren Nachbarn eine Cruise Missile "vorbeischicken". Gerade weil es ja Experimente waren, interessiert die geneigte Zuschauerschaft deren Ergebnisse und die Erkenntnisse daraus, aus denen sich eine gewisse Evolution (Weiterentwicklung) ergeben sollte. Interessant ist, daß Sie für Ihre Projekte vorhandene Materialien verwenden. Um so mehr dürften Zuschauer an Details interessiert sein, um selber auch kostengünstig handwerklich tätig zu werden - angesichts der stetig steigenden Preise für fertige Dinge oder entsprechende Dienstleistungen. Es ist lobenswert, daß Sie Ihr Wissen auch anderen zur Verfügung stellen, doch braucht ja gerade derjenige, welcher bei "RU-vid" auf der Suche nach Wissen oder Inspiration ist, etwas detailliertere Informationen, um ebenfalls selber aktiv werden zu können. Das fertige Produkt allein liefert eben leider nicht diese Informationen, wenngleich es interessant ist zu sehen, wie sich das Ergebnis am Ende präsentiert. Daß der Baumniederholer bei Ihnen nicht zu einer Verbesserung der Segeleigenschaften geführt hat, ist schon interessant. Bei Hochtakelungen (Bermuda-Rigg) hört man immer, daß sie unverzichtbar sind. Von Gaffelsegeln weiß ich, daß diese in der Regel auch keine haben. Transparente Segel kenne ich vor allem aus dem Modellbootsbau. Da durch die Transparenz die Sicht nicht behindert wird, ist es um so bedauerlicher, daß das Segel leider nicht länger "überlebte". Gerade solche Informationen sind es doch aber, die potentielle Nachbauer interessieren dürften, um eben nicht die gleichen Fehler zu begehen. Lag es am Material oder der Verarbeitung? Dennoch sind ja alle aus einem solchen Experiment gewonnenen Erkenntnisse hilfreich und wert, veröffentlicht zu werden. Mich persönlich interessiert vor allem immer das Thema flacher Segelschnitt contra profilierter Segelschnitt. Speziell, wie genau der jeweilige Konstrukteur das Profil ins Segel "eingebaut" hat. Das Segel aus Episode 12 ist ja nun ein professionell gefertigtes Zukaufteil mit Segellatten - wie auf Ihrer 'homepage' zu erfahren ist. Scheinbar toppt es doch letztendlich all Ihre bisherigen Eigenkonstruktionen, von denen mir das blaue Segel für Ihren Bekannten und das durchsichtige Segel als sehr interessant erschienen, und das bunte lattenlose Hochsegel aus Episode 4. Eine Lattung und ein gutes Profil sind ja besonders bei weniger Wind sehr von Vorteil, was Sie bestimmt festgestellt haben. Gerade aus diesem Grunde suche ich im "Netz" danach, ob schon mal jemand Segel mit einer Lattung nachgerüstet oder selber Segellattentaschen gefertigt hat. mit freundlichen Grüßen - Bill ****************************************************************************************** Dear Mr. Harris! Hi, with this under 2m.sq sail I've never capsized so far in winds up to 10-12kts. But I did capsized on a 3.5m.sq+ sail once due to bad positioning trying to adjust rigging in 12-13kts winds 🤣

this project turned out really good. i bet that craft must be reliable and sturdy and perform well. i suggest you put 1 pulley on the boom for the mainsheet, it will allow smooth and precise adjustment. . theres a guy in america who designs and sells similar stuff. this is how i got started sailing. check out sailboatstogo . com

hey thanks Brian, yeah that's a great idea adding pulleys to the boom for mainsheet, the adjustments on the carabiners were sticky 😂 I'd look for a couple to add them onto the next sail out. Yes I think I've seen sailboatstogo.com long ago when I was researching about how to build the kit, it's definitely a great place to start 💪😁
