Rigging can be a complex process with a variety of ropes and lines and hooks. It is a basic process to understand as you learn how to sail. Understanding what they all do is important because it allows you to know wht rope does what and how to rig the boat effectively and safely. A badly rigged boat can be hazardous and potentially dangerous so take the time to get it right

Thanks for contacting us. Our videos deal only with small dinghies. I am sure there are other videos out there for bigger boats

I’m new and learning so I want to say what everyone else like me is thinking ... all the sailing terms like Clue and Halyard are totally weak and ultimately ghey .... “connect the Spoonty to the Flibitty...” Turn right and left , in and out, down shackle , up shackle, main or front .... wake up to yourselves and tie ropes to stuff.... but Quint was pretty cool so I’m stuck .. hmmm

It’s tricky. If we dilute all the terminology down then it all becomes confusing and the videos don’t fit other media. For that reason we stuck with the standard marine terminology. Try to go with it and learn as you go. It’s not that bad..... promise ;)

I have just bought an otter sailing dinghy and am looking for information on rigging as i am a complete beginner. I can't find any videos on the otter so wondered if you could suggest a similar boat to rig or know of any other information that could help me. Many thanks.

Hi Patsy. I do not know that particular boat, but boats generally have two styles of rigging. Either pull sails up with a halyard, or the sail slips into a pocket on the mast as we show in the Laser rigging. Your boat should be one of these. Hope that helps

Am i still able to get a reply here? I have an Otter dinghy and am wondering if the more modern boats are similar to rig as my Otter?

Hi Pasty. I am not familiar with the Otter dinghy but all sails have 3 corners and follow the steps. If you get stuck take some photos and send them to tim@sailaboat.tv and i will see if i can help

Noah Parton Hi Noah thanks for the note. Our best advice is that you go to a local sailing club and ask there. You don't say what boat you have so it is not possible to advise. But a local sailing club should sort you out. Good luck Sailaboat

Hi Alan. Sadly we had to take the website down. Insufficient interest of people happy to pay for content meant our costs were too high. The DVDs are still available on Amazon both in the UK and USA (not sure where you are) Otherwise all the content is now on RU-vid in very small bite sized chunks. There are also playlists assembled on RU-vid too via our channel. We rely on advertising now for small revenue so apologies for the ads! Many thanks Tim
