I'm gonna have a mixed crew German and English, so bilingual screaming commands in gale force winds will be fun! Might be handy to have main and jib each in a different language to address to :D
Hi... I'm reading John Wray's "South Sea Vagabonds", first published in 1939 and how he built his first sailboat himself in the early 1930s (he was only 21 at the time). Anyway, I'm 73 and am enjoyong his book, though I'm always looking up words as I know nothing of sailing. Wray mentioned coming out of his first storm and he and his crew being careful not to let their boat gybe, and so I had to look it up here in RU-vid. Your video was the first to come up. Great explanation. If only I was young again. Thanks!
Cool info, we'll have to check out that book. Never too old. We had an 80 year old student last week, he was sharp as a tack! There is a saying among sailors, "Go cruising for 5 years, come home 10 years younger."
Yes, a reefing episode is a great idea! We will definitely add that to the filming list for the next set of videos, which we are hoping to release this fall. Thanks!
Great demonstration captain! When I have very strong winds I rather do a Tack instead of Jibe. Much safer and also much faster for the inexperienced crew
Yes, great point! There are definitely times when going all the way around and through a tack instead of doing a gybe, especially in stronger winds, stormier conditions and with inexperienced crew, makes a lot of sense...
@@michajabonski8152 If it's done correctly is way more safe. In any case we do not do things that we are not trained and practice to do and I recommend you to join a local sailing club with a coach and ask him to explain you everything 😎
Sorry for my English, but when I tack I let the boat fall from wind a little to gain speed, and then steer the boat through the wind smouthly. You loose the most speed by steering through the wind to abtruptly, with the risk of stalling, and eventually even jibing....
Tim! Thanks for these videos. I am a musician who's about to move into a boat and learn to sail it and sail to South America and your videos are just simply the best I have seen so far. Is there a way for me to participate as a member of one of your crews?? Keep up these videos, please!!
Hey Diego... Glad you are enjoying the videos! Check out our website at www.nautilussailing.com. We run lots of courses in amazing destinations to help people learn to sail and we have some incredible trips for our alumni (our former students). Hoping to film some more videos this fall as countries reopen their borders :)
I feel these videos are excellent since there is no BS. no long winded speeches and I like how they are broken down into specific sailing jobs. cant wait to feel the wind take the boat for the first time. never been sailing. I am trying to learn by watching. I feel the more I understand the fundamentals the easer and less scary it will be when it comes time.
Couldn’t agree with Alex’s comment more! As a new student of sailing I have been voraciously consuming online info and let me tell you, there’s a lot of trash out there. I’m pretty discerning when it comes to subscribing to RU-vid channels but it only took me 4 minutes to know this one is a keeper. Thanks for the great instruction!!
Just watched a couple of your vids and I am extremely impressed with your teaching....I want to get back into sailing and this is so useful to me...very many thanks for such a good job.
@You don’t have to be rich, plenty of ordinary guys own bass boats, jet skis, snowmobiles (or his & hers). For the same price you can go sailing with a 14-21 foot used, or new, sailboat
You should write about it this book with all illustration , on how to sail , wind control and all the terminology about sailing and the boat! Pls? 👍☮️💟
When tacking, you tighten the main sheet. When do you loosen the main sheet? Is that what you meant by trimming the sail or were you referring to the jib?
She's an AWESOME boat! She's a 2012 Jeanneau 439 Sun Odyssey named "Journey". We sail all the major production boats and the newer Jeanneau's are definitely our favorites. They sail beautifully, have modern lines and design, lots of light and space, and are super comfortable. Hope you are able to get back on the water soon!
Thank you for your content.. I will be binge watching before I begin my first 4 day sailing class! It feels like learning a new language ..and maybe some math too! Lol
Agree with comment on lack of subscribers, brilliant videos, I never subscribe but think you deserve it. Learnt more on here than on my rya course, going to find where you guys are for next course!
It's all a balancing act! You definitely don't want to release your jib before you are through the wind or you loose momentum and your jib flaps like crazy. However, once the jib is through the wind get it on the new side and trimmed as quickly as possible to maintain speed.
Mostly true! On a tack the mainsail is centered, so you only deal with the jib and move it from one side to the other. On a gybe, the sail we worry about is the mainsail (we want to avoid an accidental gybe!) so we deal with moving that from one side to other first, and once that is safely across, then we move the jib/genoa.
As someone who has been hit in the head by the boom during a gybe, and left unconscious on the cabin floor, step #2 of the gybe process is very important.
I am learning to sail with friends, on weekends. I have done these movements several times, but now, I understand what is happening, and what is expected of me. I feel more confident about performing these movements with greater precision, thank you!
Hey Joe... Yes, she's a BEAUTIFUL boat! She is a 2012 Jeanneau 439 Sun Odyssey. We've sailed on a lot of monohulls, and this is absolutely one of our favorites!
Yes, we love that idea John! At some point we hope to make a series for single handers, but we have a couple of other video projects in line first. Stay tuned :)
Thanks so much! The pandemic put hold on this project, but we have already filmed more videos this year and are filming another round in the weeks to come. Hopefully should have some new instructional videos released this fall, so stay tuned! So glad you are enjoying them.
You must love Jehovah your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. You must love your neighbor as yourself. Jesus the anointed is Lord! Repent and be baptized and believe the Gospel.
