Filmed in Vassiliki, Greece- join me here for a clinic!
Kit used... a mix of Point-7 sails, mainly the Spy, ACX and F1e.
Boards vary too, starboard tends to be my "go-to" for kit, but also RRD a lot too.
Audio recorded on InstaMic
Filmed on a mix of Insta360 OneR & GoPro Max
Mixture of camera mounts including Fly Mount and Sail Video System
This video I cover how to really crank as far upwind, as quick as possible; leaving you more time to practice those fun downwind manoeuvres!
This is the continuation to the summer 2021 series filmed from the Cosmos Hotel, Vassiliki.
Comment here or find me on Instagram to discus lessons and clinics options through this summer. @cookiesport

Great topic, trying to stay upwind is where 70% of my energy goes especially in marginal conditions like your video. I find that to go in the plane these conditions you have to bare away and that's enough to loose all the upwind gains done while waiting for the gust...thanks again for the video.

Very concise explanations there, even though I don't really need any help with this, I watched anyway because there is always something you say or point out which I find useful, even if its something I already do or already know. Thank you for the video! Great info! One question though, does any of things change when using thruster fin setup? Anything particular we should pay attention to for going upwind efficiently with thruster?
@Cookiesports
@Cookiesports 3 года назад
Thanks for watching. The nice thing about the thruster set up is you don't need the foot straps so far outboard to affect the trim- they can stay further in (and easier to get into!) and you can still get the windward rail down as described in this video! (The BIG-ZEE board I'm on in this video is thruster!)

Thanks! Great video Cookie, some top tips.I agree with the others, the camera is cool but makes it difficult to see much of your position and stance. Upwind sailing I find tipping the rig forward towards the windward side also works, could be wrong? but seems to have great effect.
@Cookiesports
@Cookiesports 3 года назад
Hi! Thanks for watching! I'll have a play with the 360 camera views for the next video. I though the large angle made it clearer to see, but clearly I was wrong! Upwind- pulling the rig to windward is an out come of "channeling the power- pull the rig IN, BACK & DOWN" to the rider, the rig will of course go to windward. 👌

I love your series, constantly watching for a new tip or two as I progress through my early intermediate stage, I sail at Stokes Bay on the south coast and we get punished by the tide especially after a swim, so much of my time is spent trying to sail up wind, yesterday in lighter conditions I found I was able to sail closer to the wind when not in the harness as I was able to sheet in more, what is the technique to using the harness lines to help sheet in?
@Cookiesports
@Cookiesports 2 года назад
Hi Adam, thanks for watching- really happy I can help! It could be that your lines are too far forward if you cannot sheet in- commitment to the harness should pull the sail in for you! 👍

@@jamesdougall2886 Its a freestyle wave with a thruster set up. Thrusters a "easy" to sail and get in the straps- they don't need to be outboard at all to get the pressure on the heels. Very good set up if anyone is struggling with foot straps, but happy on sub 140 lt. This is a new 137 few from BigZee boards, highly recommend. Only costs around 1300e brand new!

I'd love for you to talk more about "mast foot pressure" and why you don't use the term. I've used it while teaching other windsurfers and am curious how you'd explain the concept differently (or why the concept isn't useful at all).
@markopanger412
@markopanger412 3 года назад
While I was learnig I was literally bombarded with this term. Each video or any social media content is mentioning it. Despite that I didn't imagined it till I reall felt it. And that transition was for me two things really. Driving the board with the front foot and not laying out on the harnes but rather down and out/back. This made me feel what mfp or power in the rig really is. That was my experience. Hope it helps somebody...
@Cookiesports
@Cookiesports 3 года назад
Hi! Short answer on MFP... when taught, received and implemented 100% correctly it can be useful. The reason it's been dropped for all modern teaching syylabus's is far too often one or more of those three things are done wrong- it becomes miss explained, miss understood, then wrongly implemented on the water. Wrongly done MFP is what I did briefly, it pushes the board down into the water, stopping any drive forward. It pulls the harness lines up to the riders chin (a common issue!). "I've got all this power but can't get going" "I seem to need a 7m sail when everyone else has a 5m"... all common outcomes from misunderstanding MFP. "Channeling the POWER by pulling the sail IN, BACK & DOWN" can still be done wrong of course, but it's much easier for instructors to explain and students to understand and action. Hope that helps? If more people ask for it i'll gladly make a video explaining it (I'm better at the spoken word than written! 😜)
@ericlee7841
@ericlee7841 3 года назад
@@Cookiesports Thank you! Definitely makes sense in terms of taught/received/implemented. Looking forward to testing out "in, back, and down" while teaching over the next few weeks
@Cookiesports
@Cookiesports 3 года назад
It’s sort of three stages to teaching- taught, received, implemented- what we may think is simple (taught) is misunderstood in the student (received), then they cants do what they thought they understood so implement something completely different. No modern coaching schemes us MFP anymore, “channeling the power in, back & down is straight out of the RYA coaching hand book! Game changer! Have a look at the “elements of Windsurfing video” if you get a chance.

@shmish
@shmish 3 года назад
I’m working on my windfoiling stance, something with it seems wrong. I’m consistently pulling my arms in to keep power in the sail (front hand kind of close to the mast). If I keep my arms extended (front hand a bit further back, more “normal”), the rig feels like it just wants to fall aft and I almost have to push with my front hand to keep the sail up. Anyways, if I can borrow a GoPro (not a 360), which camera angle/mount do you suggest I use to capture my stance? Have a good one!
@Cookiesports
@Cookiesports 3 года назад
That for joining me! If your front hand is close to the mast you'll be always de-powering- get that front had back by the front lines! There are so many options for GoPro mounts, anything thats stone enough to hold the vibrations.... plus a safety line!

The phrase I HATE is Mast Foot Pressure- it just doesn't work for most instructors or students and is so often miss-used/interpreted. The key bit for powering up and getting going effecfiantly is "Channeling the POWER, bu pulling the sail IN, BACK & DOWN' as I go through in this video, and also this one... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rJ4QD4Tmw9E.html

Have watched all your videos so far and are so happy you're back. But I must say the new camera really puts me off. Fisheye lens makes it impossible to see the direction you're sailing. You become very small making it super difficult to say your stance and body work. We can't see your face so it makes the videos less personal.... I won't the width was a bit narrow on the old one but this has gone too far in the opposite direction imo. 😊 Much love from Denmark.
