From the basics of hoisting, trimming, and dropping your asymmetric spinnaker, to some more advanced tips that we don't see other cruising sailors using. With 55 years of sailing experience between them Amy, an RYA sailing instructor and Matt, an RYA racing coach, share hands-on knowledge of how to use a spinnaker on a yacht. Double-handed downwind spinnaker sailing made enjoyable and easy.

We are a British couple who set off from England in 2016 to fulfill our dream of sailing around the world on our 37ft sail boat, Florence. Along the way we share the live aboard lifestyle with the highs and lows of travelling around the world by boat, our own little tiny house. Boat life out at sea on the ocean and off the grid.

I found it very useful, I always regarded the use of a spinnaker as a dark art but I now have much better understanding of how and when to use it. Great video, stay safe x

This was perfect; information and timing. I’m right in the middle of specking an asymmetric but wasn’t sure how I would rig it. The addition of a tweaker, snatch blocks and ratchet block for the dowsing sock line answer all my questions about control. Also, never considered using the Samson post as the tack line attachment point, so another of my problems solved. Now all I have to do is order my sail, sock, lines and blocks! Can’t wait for spring...it’s -7C here in Toronto! Fair winds.

I've sailed dinghies with an asym and I love it. This is the first time I have ever seen someone use a spin-pole on an asym. Very interesting. Doesn't your VMG suffer when doing that? I would think you'd be better off jibing downwind... I guess if you have limited seaway and short-handed like that, the ease makes it worth it?

Hi Guys, It took us 18 months to slow down from racers to cruisers! It was the passage from Tonga to New Zealand that finally did it where we reduced sail a lot to slow down and make the motion of the boat more comfortable. Since then we never bother to work out our average passage speeds.

Great video. I had never seen a tweaker line to control the sheet like that, but it makes perfect sense to easily change the angle of pull on the spinnaker to help stabilize it. Very clever. I love your videos, keep up the good work. Fair winds.

I've sailed a lot with both regular and asymmetric spinnakers but still found you tips helpful. I especially liked the use of the pole for apparent winds too far aft for the normal asymmetric set up and the use of the ratchet block for the take down line. I also love all of your episodes and look forward to each one's arrival in my in box especially now locked down by Covid and buried under snow in New England.

Low positioning of the spinnaker pole for your assymetric is essential in light winds and flat seas. For novice to even competent sailors that may rarelyhave set/hoisted a spinnaker or "assy" try it in light winds ideal conditions first and progress from there. Winds of 18 knots + gets a bit hairy. I was a bowman on racing boats until I was in my late 50's. Why? Because no one wants to do it. Nice video Matt and Amy well explained. Who was steering? ha ha
@ellencollins9092
@ellencollins9092 3 года назад
Thx for the videos -they always brighten my week. We have an asymmetric on a furling system which makes the idea of moving the tack to the pole to sail deeper impossible. However if we have to sail low our solution is to simply goose wing using the spinnaker pole. Works well enough - especially with the code0
