I am so glad I found your videos, the RU-vid algorithm worked this time! My husband and I recently bought our first home, it's 83 years old with the original oak floors. They look like they've never been refinished, so we are doing them outselves before moving in. I found your channel after finishing the edge sanding (did that first). We edge sanded 36, 60, 80, 100, and 120, and I just watched a video of yours saying not to go too high on the edge sanding grit due to burning. I definitely experienced that with my 120 grit edging, had to buff it away with a palm sander after! Couple of questions for clarification: 1. Is there any benefit to drum sanding past 80 grit? I had planned to do the same progression, 36, 60, 80, 100, 120, but noticed you stop at 80. 2. Should I screen sand between stain and the first coat of poly, or just between each coat of poly? Also, what do you think about a random orbital sander for screening? Like the Clarke EZ-SAND? We will likely be staining, and I know you said the OBS sander might be too aggressive for screening over stained floors, but I have >1500 square feet to do, so wanted to avoid doing it by hand. 3. Any tips for sanding stairs? They're kicking my butt and are the biggest road block in the process so far! 😩 4. One section of the floor has fairly sizeable gaps, likely due to moisture exposure. Would you simply recommend wood filler? Don't want it to look bad once stained. 5. What product(s) do you recommend for cleaning hardwood floors? Seems to be some disagreement in the industry regarding which products are ideal for hardwood. Thanks again for your videos, they are so thorough and helpful!

Answers 1. Is there any benefit to drum sanding past 80 grit? I had planned to do the same progression, 36, 60, 80, 100, 120, but noticed you stop at 80. I stop at 80 grit for drum sanding as this is sufficient. If you have time to sand higher that's okay too. No screen sand between stain and 1st coat, only between coats of poly. 3. Any tips for sanding stairs? They're kicking my butt and are the biggest road block in the process so far! 😩 Use the edger if you're able...if not use a hand scraper and 36 grit on a palm sander, then progress to 60, then 100 grit. 4. One section of the floor has fairly sizeable gaps, likely due to moisture exposure. Would you simply recommend wood filler? Don't want it to look bad once stained. You can apply gap filler after rough sanding, then sand it out with higher grit. Realize all gap filler eventually breaks loose and comes out. 5. What product(s) do you recommend for cleaning hardwood floors? Seems to be some disagreement in the industry regarding which products are ideal for hardwood. Bona hardwood floor cleaner is a good product. Hope this helps. 🙂

I am considering Fabulon super gloss on red oak (stained Minwax Special walnut). Would you suggest 2 coats of Fabulon or 3? My quote only includes 2, and they said 2 coats is all they’ve ever done. Thanks!
@HardwoodFloorRefinishing101
2 coats is the minimum required. 3 coats is better, more protection. Ask them to price in the cost of 3rd coat. When I refinished a room in my home I applied 5 thin coats, more is always better. Depending on the manufacturer, pre finished hardwood will have 9 to 15 very thin coats of finish, which gives it the hard protective finish.

Hello Sir, I hope you are doing good, thank you for sharing your knowledge, there are a lot of videos out there but you can definitely tell who really know his thing. I have watched some of your other videos and I am going to refinish this floor I am doing exactly following your steps. My question is, do you sand after your first druming? Or you just go over with the second drumming (80) ? I know you have mentioned that you sand between the buffering sandings but I am not sure If I haven't heard that you also sand between the drummings. Thank you very much in advance.

I am sorry my question is "do you vacuum" in between the drum sandings?
@HardwoodFloorRefinishing101
@HardwoodFloorRefinishing101 2 года назад
@@shinomex yes always vacuum between grits, also before starting the sanding thoroughly vacuum floor making sure there’s no dried drywall mud if there’s renovation work going on, and make sure there’s no nails, screws, staples anywhere on floor and perimeter as these can damage your machines.
